“Let your fears dissolve in the dance!”
|
It began as the Ancients arose. A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality. After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory. Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real. A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet. They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own. Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it. The question now is… will they? |

Nachana had never been able to sit still as a hatchling - even more than most Spirals. Unlike most, though, she didn't seem to have much interest in developing complicated games to entertain herself growing up; while everything she did seemed to have some obscure rhythm to it, rare was it to see her do something with a purpose on her own. When she was pulled into games with her siblings, she rarely managed to make herself a good playmate. The exception, however, was hide and seek. When she and her siblings played hide and seek, Nachana rarely got found, but she always proved herself an excellent finder. She never knew why everyone else had so much trouble with it - as a child, she didn't realize that most hatchlings couldn't feel the rhythm of life the way she could, the way the breeze and her pulse and the vibrations in the ground played together to create a world of information. As a child, she could hear and feel where lots of things were and their state - things that included people. As she grew, she learned how to refine her perception, and more importantly, how to insert herself into it. And then she learned how to dance. |

Every motion was grace, every breath filled with purpose. It had to be, for what she did. Nachana had an odd little limit to her magic - no matter how hard she tried (which, admittedly, wasn't very hard), she could never figure out how to work it without dancing. Almost every time anyone saw her, she was in flight; miles into the sky, inches off the ground, it hardly seemed to matter - Nachana's claws did not touch dirt nor stone nor sheet of ice, only the open sky. Her wings moved in very deliberate artistic patterns; her tail flicked to and fro as she needed. Like this, she could play with the rhythm of life, soothe the irregularities in the song and set the world to rights. The rest of her family knew this was her way of cleansing the nightmare plague, her way of continuing their collective purpose. But a couple of relatives saw more - saw abilities precious few other Dreamers could hope to touch. Her father, her grandmother, the rest of the Rifters in the clan - they saw her warping the world in subtle, nitpicky ways to make it her own. This was an odd ability for a Rogue, to be sure, but who were they to complain about Nachana's power when she seemed to be using it for good? They informed her of it, of course, but none of them were at all upset by her means or methods. None at all. And so Nachana danced, travelling the Sunbeam Ruins as far as she could to learn as much as there was to be learned. Immigrant dragons were her favorite tutors, and more often than not, her hardest charges. The decision to leave one's home flight, to rally themself behind a foreign god at war with their own, often left scars, and nightmares of persecution were common. But she pulled them all into her dances, learning to work with every breed and size, and cast the plague off, leaving them free once more. That's what her family did, after all. |
