“Come on, now, no need to hide. We're all safe here.”
|
It began as the Ancients arose. A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality. After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory. Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real. A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet. They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own. Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it. The question now is… will they? |

Moshkine had always been a cheerful sort, even as a hatchling. He loved to play games, all the way through adulthood, loved the flying about and the laughter and the sense of being truly close to his playmates. They grew apart as they grew up, of course, and they made new friends; Moshkine's family, his mother and uncle and cousins, naturally called to him, and it was through them that he learned the story of Allison and the Organization, and the powers that their family wielded. He spoke to his father, too, of course. He learned about his other family quest as well, and all about the dream magic that passed through their blood. But it seemed to have skipped one more generation, not completely, but in large part - dreamstuff was harder for him to mold than lumps of clay, and really, not as interesting. It was important, but deep down, he and his father both knew that this quest wasn't for them. So he focused on the powers of Allison, and what he couldn't do magically, he found magic-enhanced tricks to pull off. Most of that, though, went into entertainment. Sleight-of-hand, card tricks, juggling - he quite enjoyed using his quick reflexes to make others laugh and smile, when he couldn't play games with them. It made him smile, too. |

And so he passed his days, learning more and more fun and interesting ways to use his magic and his body in kind. Soon enough, he all but danced over the ruins and trees that his clan lived around, and he swore he could feel his magic pulse through his blood as he did - and friends would come and follow, creating a many-bodied swarm of dragons, uncaring of breed, age, or standing. They danced together through their days, cheering and laughing, until, eventually, they grew tired and crawled back home, wondering once again what on Sornieth had possessed them to waste so much time on such foolishness. Moshkine always felt sad to hear them call their dancing and play foolishness, but he smiled all the same. They would come back to play with him again, whenever he called. Maybe it wasn't quite right of him to use his family's powers to play with his friends, but there wasn't much else to do with them, and people were always working themselves too hard anyways. They could use a little time to just have fun together. |
