Wary and skeptical of others, he has a hard time believing people don't always have ulterior motives. He saw how obsessed with his mom his dad was (Vash, himself, was named after his mom by his dad), but never really felt the need to prove his worth or win anyone's love. Rather, he felt resentful that he wasn't given the attention and love that he felt he deserved, either from his father -- who was more focused on enjoying his mother, to the point of shamelessly and continuously trying to tempt her toward him -- or his mother, who didn't even stay with him and his sisters (Lyasha and Hiashra) any longer than to tell them how to live. Worse, his dad -- whom his mom left him and his two sisters with -- never cared about Vash nor his siblings for who they were. Sure, he would protect them and give them what they needed to be healthy, but he made no attempt to hide that he only cared about their Shade DNA. Worse, they were royal Gaolitchshades, so any loyalty to them wasn't of any paternal instinct. Rather, Vash's father, Asher, loved what his children were made of, not the children themselves...and Vash hated it.

Vash is pretty bitter at his parents -- and at the Shade -- as a result. His father tried to foster the Shade side of his spawn, but Vash lashed out, rebelling against his heritage as a Gaolitchshade and wishing that he was just a regular Gaoler. Of course, Asher disapproved, but Vash didn't care. If his father didn't care about him -- if Asher as just some Shade-worshipping cultist, then why should Vash care about Asher? And yet...he still has that innate connection to the Shade that all Gaolitchshades have. He resents that, too, shutting the Shade out of his thoughts as much as he can. It's impossible, of course. All he's really doing is allowing the Shade to influence his unconscious mind. And so, whether he realizes it or not, he's performing exactly the way that the Shade wants him to, and has given up autonomy instead of having gained it.

Clutch facts:
- He wound up looking the most like his mom out of the kids in his clutch. His youngest sister wound up inheriting more of their dad's look, while the middle sister wound up getting traits from both parents.
- Both Vash (the eldest of the three) and Hiashra (the youngest of the three) set out on their own pretty early. However, their middle sister, Lyasha, stayed with Asher, their father.
