Biography
|
The ridgeback is sharpening a blade when he looks up at you with a cold stare. "What do you want?" You explain that you're visiting dragons in the Crystal Nook as he resumes sharpening. After an uncomfortable silence you ask his name. "Karst." He replies simply, followed by more silence. You then ask what he does. "Ship's in port," he spits, "I'm sharpening my blades for when we set sail again. I'm the Weapons Master." He holds the blade in the air, inspecting it as it glints in the candlelight. "I handle weapons like these right up to the necks of folks who don't mind their own business." You swiftly leave.

The Nematic Maintaining a new allegiance to the Arcanist and the clan, this group of water dragons, almost as if in a sub-clan, have formed their own ship's crew. Their ship, the Nematic arrives in other lands by port, and is another means of gathering, trading, and profiting. The word nematic itself is an adjective referring to a state of liquid crystal, representing the crew's dual nature of water and association with the Crystal Nook. |

The Blue Hole
A deep sinkhole on Plague's border with Arcane, the blue hole plunges straight from the shallows to the twilight zone. The water teems with bacteria, sickening any who linger here and keeping all but the most stubborn corals from its edges. Dragons hatched here can be of Plague or Water, depending on the balance of power at the time, and a nest incubated at the bottom of the hole will produce mutant Shadow dragons. |
A Pirate's Life For Me
Normally, ridgebacks hate water, but Karst is a hardy creature who trained in the waters of his home sinkhole for the first portion of his life. Every day he would swim laps from the dark depths to the bright surface, building muscle. He would find pieces debris like rods and jagged metal as makeshift swords and knives, and practice his form with them until he could move the weapons in the water as quickly as one could on land. |
Brought on by the Wavecrest Saturnalia, he made landfall for the first time, and immediately began training his muscles for land. He looked up from his theoretical sword fight and saw a wildclaw in the distance, donning a feathered hat. "OI!" The wildclaw called, "what's your name?" "Karst Bloodletter!" Karst bellowed. "Who wants to know?!" |
"Your new captain," the wildclaw announced confidently. "I've been looking for a master-at-arms for some time, and you look like just the dragon for the job. How would you like to be in Captain Admiral Nightmare's crew on the glorious Nematic?"
The rest was history.

notes:
- the usual pirate weapons are a pistol and cutlass. since a pistol can fire only a single shot without being reloaded, pirates often wear two or three at a time on silk sashes hung around their necks. if the first shot misses or the powder is wet, the pirate is not left defenseless. the cutlass is for close-quarters hack-and-slashing.
- besides the cutlass and brace of pistols, among the other weapons used by pirates are a marksman's musket, a knife, a powder horn (for guns), a boarding axe (to climb up the sides of enemy vessels)
- and curiously a sounding lead which is used to tell if waters are deep enough for a ship to pass safely without grounding. (pirates favor shallow ships called sloops that can enter inlets and bays where the water is not deep enough for a large ship to follow)
-ships must be brought level in order to fire the cannons. a slow match is used to light the powder and send the cannonball towards the enemy ship or fort.
- onboard firepower includes cannon and swivel gun. round cannonballs are used to hole ships while other types of shot are used to destroy rigging, take down masts, or maim those on deck.
-pirates do not like to sink a ship since they would then lose their plunder, they instead board quietly from behind or use grappling roles to fix the ships together then board.
