Biography
|
Sprawled out all over the floor, are maps, seemingly of the same thing, but each map has different details overlaid the geographical features... Rustling around the maps is a coatl. "Thought I foresaw someone coming... I'm Nautica, the sailing master. It makes more sense to hear when you see me aboard our ship, the Nematic. It's in our home port right now, and the entire crew is making preparations to set sail again. I'm a seer, which helps me as a sailing master. I can visualize the oceans of Sornieth in my mind to use in navigation, but it's less draining to just use the winds and stars. And I have these maps, of course, should something ever happen to me... You never know what will happen out there. Anyway, back to preparations."

The Nematic Maintaining a new allegiance to the Arcanist and the clan, this group of water dragons, almost as if in a sub-clan, have formed their own ship's crew. Their ship, the Nematic arrives in other lands by port, and is another means of gathering, trading, and profiting. The word nematic itself is an adjective referring to a state of liquid crystal, representing the crew's dual nature of water and association with the Crystal Nook. |

Notes about her role:
- navigation is more of an art than a science. sea charts can be inaccurate and the expert pilot relies on their own judgement
- the maps have distances which are not reproduced accurately, but directions and bearings are so it's possible to calculate the direction one must sail in order to reach a particular point
- since they can't measure their longitude (east-west position) it's important to keep a ship's log, recording the distance traveled each day in order to make a guess as to their position.
- latitude (north-south) is measured at midday each day. in the logs, latitude is shown by Ob. (by observation when the sun is out) or by R. (by reckoning when it's cloudy)
- must have a working knowledge of the system of prevailing winds around sornieth (though this is a detail not mentioned by fr staff so best not to go too much into detail, i assume it's comparable to earth)
-while latitude can be measured, longitude must be guessed from a ship's speed. a backstaff is used to measure the height of the sun at midday and so to calculate the latitude
- a spyglass (telescope) is used to scan the horizon
-a compass to find the position of north
- also a homemade sundial for telling the time and a pair of dividers to measure distances on maps
- this equipment allows them to chart their course around the world and to make extremely accurate guesses as to their position when they are at sea
