Considered by Dirk to be his greatest creation, Crump was not born, but built, at the request of Hecuba. Crafted out of metal and cloth, Crump is fully autonomous but by no means truly alive. He is a soulless machine, built to crush, destroy, and defend alongside his clan leader and her right hand, Yawanuri.
This isn't to say he doesn't have some sort of personality, though -- he does speak, through a serious of whistles and grinding sounds that are most easily interpreted by other Snappers such as Rook, and he is known to have preferences, likes and dislikes, and a sense of what is right and wrong, though as far as actual emotion, he seems to be somewhat lacking. Even so, the other Nature dragons of the clan recognize his eyes to match theirs, and consider him to be one of their own. He is generally looked after and doted on by gardeners such as Sprout, Shigeru, and Saoirse.
Crump's name was dubbed by Calliope, when she joined the clan as a hatchling. No one is sure why she called him that (including Calliope herself), but the name stuck.
