When Serrure didn't return as scheduled Loki found himself beginning to worry, a foreign emotion for him. After a month he finally set out to look for the other, guilt driving him in his quest. When he arrived at the location of the rumored caves, they were nowhere to be seen. Instead he saw a young hatchling running around. Initially turning to leave, Loki caught sight of the hatchling's eyes and recognition shot through him. The hatchling, despite not seeming to recognize him, followed Loki back to the clan's lands.
Dismayed by the apparent curse, Orchidae forbid the clan from continuing to seek the cave. Loki agreed but returned to the site, searching for a means to cure Serrure. Eventually, he was forced to admit that he could not find any means of doing so. No longer feeling much of a desire to follow through with his previous plans, Loki settled down more permanently, Serrure joining him. Although he continues to try to fix his companion, Loki increasingly finds himself drawn into the other's antics and many of the dragons of the clan are surprised to see him honestly seeming to enjoy himself while engaging in mischief with Serrure, allowing the younger dragon to lead.
Loki's personality has changed significantly since he first joined. Whereas before he looked after only himself, now he is starting to put another's well-bring over his own, although that is mostly due to guilt. Loki enjoys being smarter than other dragons but can find it to be boring as well. With Serrure's influence he's slowly starting to feel bad for his previous crimes.
Most recently, Loki's successor on the council, Verity has been spending more time with him and Serrure. Her ability to tell when Loki is lying is something he finds surprisingly refreshing. It keeps him from falling back into bad habits and her presence is what Loki himself attributes as being the final step in his 'rehabilitation', not that he would ever say so out loud. He likes to bounce ideas off of Verity, using her as a sounding board for his plans.
When a new dragon arrived at the Hotaru Clan, Loki did his best to avoid him. Despite the other's charisma, Loki could recognize when it was used to hide a poor personality underneath. He could see that Thor was on the verge of leaving when the other ran into him one night and began drunkenly berating him. Not willing to simply listen to the other's tirade, Loki began yelling back, calling Thor out on the very behavior which was alienating him from the clan. Interrupting every time Thor tried to speak, when Loki finished he quickly disappeared, just in case. He is more than willing to admit that Thor is stronger than him, although he is happy to say that he is far more intelligent.
Thor, to Loki's surprise, remained with the clan. The imperial began to change, occasionally stopping by to talk to Loki. Although initially irritated by the other's presence, Loki began to actually look forward to the other's visits. Over time, he even began to see Thor as a sort of adopted brother. That said, when he learned that Serrure was accompanying Thor on his missions and had nearly been killed, he did not hesitate to put his foot down. Serrure is now only allowed to accompany Thor if Loki is present.

“What is it you’re after?”
Loki paused and turned. Much as he didn’t like the nocturne, he had to admit that Amaros’ dramatic entrance was pretty impressive. The other councilor had positioned himself just so between the torches lining the hallway and waited until Loki was most of the way past him before speaking. The result was that the dragon lay mostly in shadow with just the faint, blueish flame of his candles to provide ambiance. The dancing light of his Gloomwillow Guide (fitting, given the councilor’s ‘gloomy’ nature) cast a hint of illumination upon the nocturne’s face every so often. Enough for Loki to see the suspicious cast to the other’s features.
“Dinner? All that debating made me rather peckish.” Amaros might have the theatrical setting mastered, but Loki was unmatched in the skills of acting. He turned towards the other councilor, keeping his body just tensed enough to indicate surprise at the mage’s presence but relaxed enough to imply he had nothing to hide. A lie of course. Not that anyone other than Amaros seemed to have noticed. “Did you want to join me?”
Another flicker of light showed off Amaros’ narrowed eyes (more narrowed than usual- Loki wondered just how narrow they could get). “Don’t play dumb. You’re on the council now. What are you planning to do with that position?”
“Well, advocate for the clan I suppose. That’s the purpose of the council, isn’t it?”
The nocturne snorted. “Somehow I doubt you’re interested in the clan’s welfare.”
Loki shrugged. “I don’t know why you’d think that, but it seems like you’ve rather made up your mind about my nefarious purposes. Was my stated intention to have dinner evidence of my plot to poison the clan and make off cackling into the night?”
The nocturne’s tail lashed at the air. “If you had such a plot, it’d be doomed to failure. Obviously, we both are well aware that that’s not your endgame.”
“If you’re aware of my endgame, then why are we having this conversation?” Loki tilted his head, biting back a smile at the irritation he could picture on the mage’s face.
“I will admit, I debated keeping my silence. However, I decided it would be better for you to be aware that someone is keeping tabs on you. You can try to take me out, but you would assuredly fail. Even if by some miracle you succeeded, I’ve taken the precaution to secure certain… intelligence with trusted sources. In the event of my untimely departure, they would reveal such information.” The nocturne’s tail lashed again. This time, when his face was briefly illuminated, it was a smug expression. Loki hated the sign of that smirk. “Information that includes matters concerning the Jotun clan.”
Loki wasn’t nearly such an amateur as to stiffen at the name. He merely tilted his head, the perfect picture of befuddlement. The mage had no real proof after all. There was nothing to tie Loki to any of that. He had suspicions and surprisingly informed ones at that, but if he had proof he would have taken it to the council while he’d been fighting tooth and nail to prevent Loki being given a seat on it.
“Whatever you are planning on doing to my clan, think again,” Amaros continued. “My retaliation would be… thorough.”
Normally, Loki would find such a threat laughable. Instead he was mentally re-evaluating the nocturne’s threat rating. He’d heard rumors of Amaros’ association with Salamiel and a dragon named Azael who had formerly been a member of the Hotaru clan and since joined with their allied clan. Both of the other dragons were linked to events that made some of his own dealings look quite tame. Amaros wasn’t, not directly, but now Loki couldn’t help but wonder if that was just because the mage was better at keeping his name out of it. Which would make him far more dangerous. Despite the thoughts whizzing through his head, he smiled at Amaros. “Well then, it’s good that the only thing I’m planning on right now is making myself a sandwich, isn’t it?” If the other wanted a battle of wits, a battle he would have. Loki was still confident in his victory. It would be an amusing pastime until he achieved his objectives at least.

Loki was not always a good person. Before he joined the Hotaru clan he lied and cheated and stole, killing those who got in his way without remorse. Journeying to the lands controlled by the Hotaru, Loki intended to do more of the same before slipping off. To keep from being recognized, he disguised his appearance using magic to appear to be a female Imperial. He began laying the groundwork to gain acceptance in the clan; he learned to fight from Aodh and Ajuga and practiced magic with Marigold (both learning new magics and teaching her minor spells he had invented himself). During this time he began to manipulate the clan until he was up for nomination as a member of the council and an advisor, much to Amaros's annoyance. His plan was to gain control of the clan's resources, steal them, and then leave to sell them on the black market. This all changed when he met Serrure, a younger nocturne. Serrure's cleverness when the young dragon played a prank on Amaros impressed Loki and the Imperial began to pay slightly more attention to the other. As Serrure grew up, Loki offered him advice, more curious to see how he could manipulate the other's growth than out of a desire to actually help the other. Serrure began to follow him around and Loki took the other into fights with him, pushing him to grow stronger. When they heard about a mysterious cavern in the Arcane realms, Serrure followed Loki's suggestion to check it out alone. |
