"As much as they're able, I want people to trust me."

Serrure never had any parents, at least not that he could remember. As a hatching he stumbled into the Hotaru clan and was taken in. Growing up, he developed a habit of playing pranks for attention; having no family of his own meant that he felt left out commonly, despite the clan's close-knit nature. He'd soon grown into a young adult but still hadn't found his place in the clan, commonly doing various odd jobs. After running a series of errands for Amaros and being told off for letting a hainu eat some valuable records, Serrure set up a trap for the critical older nocturne which wound up with the councilor being covered in bugs.

His trick caught the eye of another dragon named Loki. Delighted to have a companion who paid attention to him, Serrure followed the other around, trying to mimic the older dragon's mature behavior. It was for that reason that he learned how to fight, although he was nowhere near as effective as the older dragon. One day Serrure learned about a cavern in the Arcane territory rumored to have magical properties. At Loki's pushing, he went to explore it, wanting to impress the older dragon by being brave.

The next thing Serrure remembered was blinking up at the sky, remembering only his name. He stayed where he was, playing in the woods until an older dragon arrived. While he didn't know who he was, Serrure felt a connection to him. He was soon following the other dragon home, trying to get him to play with him. Back with the clan he found himself the object of attention, basking in it. Despite the many offers of a place to stay, Serrure chose to remain with Loki, although sometimes he slips up and calls the dragon Ikol, although he doesn't know why. Now Serrure spends most of his time playing with Loki and planning tricks to play on the other dragons, mostly designed to make them laugh.

While not immune to the mimicry most of his species is prone to, Serrure is capable of maintaining his own personality. Although he usually puts on a brave face, inside he is usually full of self doubt. Optimistic almost to a fault, Serrure tends to balance out Loki's pessimism and might even be having a good influence on the Imperial. Self-sacrificing, Serrure puts the well-being of others before himself and will do anything, no matter how immoral, if it is to help a friend. After visiting the mysterious cave, Serrure experiences nightmares of something he can't remember and only Loki's presence is able to keep them at bay, the small nocturne sleeping curled up next to the older dragon.

Recently, Serrure has begun also following Thor around, mostly when Loki is occupied with Verity. He has grown to admire the other dragon, wanting to impress him in a similar manner to Loki. This means that, even when the mission is dangerous, he still tries to keep up as much as he can.

Name Origin: Based on Kid Loki from Marvel's 'Journey Into Mystery'

Oh my goodness, he's so cute! You picked the perfect little dragon for him - and I love that you made him a perma-baby too since he never grew up *sob* Punkwitch

Kid Loki, I think? I’m not well acquainted with the comics. Regardless, he’s adorable! orbits
The Prank:
By Watchers
Serrure fiddled with the rope, brow furrowed and tongue sticking out slightly as he delicately adjusted the tension with a twist of his talons. That uptight councilor would be by any minute- his strict adherence to a schedule made setting this up almost too easy.

“It’s not like I fed the records to the hainu,” he muttered to himself as he worked. “Well, not intentionally.” It wasn’t his fault. Really. It was all boring stuff anyway- long treatises about trading and whatnot. How was he supposed to know there was even a hainu in the area? Definitely not his fault.

Giving the rope one last tug, Serrure grabbed up the box resting on the floor of the corridor and flitted over to the farthest corner. He rounded it and pressed himself against the wall. Any minute now. Yep. There. Right on time. Peering around the corner with bated breath, Serrure watched Amaros glide down the hallway.

The older nocturne paused and Serrure’s breath caught. Had Amaros caught on already?

“What-?” Amaros darted forward, scooping the book from the puddle on the ground. Serrure began to grin as Amaros alighted on the weighted sensor as he frantically skimmed through the book.

Overhead, the rope released and the barrel tilted forward. Amaros was drenched before he could even look up at the creaking noise. He blinked slowly. One claw scooped at the sticky yellow substance coating his scales, pulling a tendril free for Amaros to examine more closely. He gingerly licked it.

“Honey? Serrure, I know-“

Serrure decided that was as good a cue as any for the final phase of his plan. He pried the lid off the box cradled in his hands. “Go on,” he whispered. “Be free.”

A chorus of buzzing arose as the insects fled their confinement. They fled right to the sweet scent of honey, where they were promptly stuck fast.

There was silence for a long moment.

“You should see your face!” Serrure doubled over with laughter. He wished he had the kind of artistic talent that could capture that expression for all eternity.

“Serrure,” Amaros said. His voice was calm. Controlled. “Did you damage one of my books for the sole intention of luring me into a… into a prank?” His control slipped slightly on the last bit as he spat the words. One eye twitched faintly and Serrure giggled harder as the swarm of insects twitched with it.

“I didn’t damage it. It’s spelled against that sort of thing.” Amaros’ face didn’t shift and Serrure’s laughter faltered slightly. “It is, isn’t it?”

“No. No it’s not.”

“Oh.” Serrure looked from the honey and insect coated nocturne to the equally coated book clutched in the other’s talons. “Um, I just remembered I have somewhere really important to be. You should probably take a shower. I don’t think they’ll let you in the council chambers like that. Bye!”
He turned and fled as fast as his wings could take him as Amaros’ temper finally cracked.

“Serrure! Get back here or you’ll be playing Russian Roulette with your meals from now on!”

Cave of Wonders:
By Dragonraven21
Serrure steeled himself as he reached the border of the Arcane territory. He had only a few hours of travel left before he reached the apparent location of the cavern he was seeking. So far, his journey had not been very difficult, a short flight with rests every few hours or so. He daydreamed while muttering to himself of the praise he would receive once he returned home. “I’ll be showered with attention when I show them the wonderful… whatever incredible things I find there. They’ll be so amazed they won’t even remember the time with the bugs”.

Serrure continued to get lost in similar sorts of fantasies until he finally spotted the cavern up ahead. Boldly he marched into the cavern, and was quickly amazed by the wonders inside. The entire cavern seemed to vibrate with a magical energy that was both overwhelming, and too subtle to detect a source.

Inside the cavern, he saw vials of all shapes and sizes containing strange looking liquids of all different colors. He saw chests of all designs, some were overflowing with treasure and other items Serrure couldn’t identify, while others were locked tight. He saw artifacts of all designs, most likely with unimaginable power or purposes. There were gems and jewels of all imaginable colors and materials. The items he saw ranged from looking newly made, to looking as old as his clan or older. Despite all the other wonders he saw, the vast majority of the items in this mystical hoard were of scrolls. Scrolls, some faded and tattered so much Serrure couldn’t imagine them being read, some neatly rolled and tied like the ones he watched the counsel write and read.

Through all of this, one item stood out to Serrure. A scroll comprised of pink parchment tied and sealed with ribbon and wax of similar colors. Something about this one item made Serrure feel drawn to it, as if all the other treasures in the cavern were meaningless. Without even thinking, Serrure picked up the scroll and broke the seal, before beginning to read. The scroll was written with strange runes he didn’t recognise, but still somehow held meaning to the nocturne.

As he scanned the page, Serrure felt… strange. His whole body ached in a way he couldn’t describe. His thoughts became blurry and it didn’t take long for merely standing to become nearly impossible. Still, he couldn’t stop reading the scroll. As he neared the end of the page he thought, Just a little bit more. Just a little bit more… That was when the world went black.

The Aftermath:
By Watchers
The small nocturne pounced for another leaf, barely managing to snag it before it hit the ground. Victory! He pranced a circle around his pile of defeated enemies. It was a fun game. Really. (It would have been more fun with company, but he had yet to see any. The woods were oddly quiet. The only thing that stirred in them were the leaves. And Serrure himself of course.)

“Alright. Now I have to hold them off from the fort for a full ten minutes,” he told himself. He crouched, wriggling slightly as he raised his eyes towards the canopy overhead. There- he leapt forward to snap the leaf from the air, imagining the no-doubt large and terrifying monster that would descend from the sky to attack his fort. “Take that,” he growled around it as he hurried to the leaf pile and set his spoils down. He turned back towards the canopy. Another one was falling now and Serrure surged forward with a loud- crack?

He froze. Crack. Another one.

Serrure slowly turned toward the noises, the divebombing attackers forgotten in lieu of the much greater threat lurking in the woods. Fighting pretend monsters was all very well and good, but Serrure found he didn’t particularly have any interest in fighting the real thing. Surely someone else would be far better suited for such a thing. This was not the kind of company he’d been hoping for.

Maybe it was friendly? Whatever it was. He was fairly certain it was headed his way regardless. Gathering himself up, he cleared his throat. “Hello?”

There was a pause in the footprints. Then- “Finally. What have you been-“ The much larger dragon stopped abruptly as he emerged from around a tree.

Not a monster after all. Serrure lit up, rearing back on his hind legs. “Hi! I’m Serrure. Do you want to play with me?”

“You- you’re… No. This is a prank. It has to be.”

The other dragon was pretty weird. That was okay. Serrure didn’t judge. “Do you know how to play? It’s okay if you don’t. I can teach you.”

“Haha.” The other didn’t sound amused. “Alright. You got me. Good job. Now you can quit it.”

Was he talking to Serrure? Serrure glanced around before deciding to assume that the other wasn’t talking to thin air. “Quit what?” Was the other one playing already? Serrure frowned. “You shouldn’t start a game without laying out the rules,” he complained. He didn’t understand this game one bit and it wasn’t fair. Or fun. “I think you’d better leave the games to me.”

“… You really aren’t joking are you?”

“No?” Were they even participating the same conversation? Serrure tilted his head. “You can be an enemy knight fighting to take back your fallen comrades who I’ve defeated and taken prisoner.” He glanced back at his leaf pile. “It’s easy- you just-“

“No. Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope.” The larger dragon turned and began marching off, still muttering ‘nope’.

“I’m starting to think you really don’t understand how playing works,” Serrure grumbled as he started after the other. Fine. He could be an enemy knight Serrure was tracking through the woods to find the enemy encampment.

In a similar situation to the ancient breeds, I don't usually pick permababies for these reviews, so I feel obligated to point out when one catches my eye, and Serrure has done that. I think runes is probably my favorite tert for permababies; it's one that I think pretty much any of them can wear and not look too ridiculous. I like the shiny, deep green wings and how they match those big innocent eyes while the primary and tertiary play off of each other. I've gushed about oilslick before, it's noce to see it getting so much attention from people because it's really a wonderful color. This is probably my favorite dragon lore-wise in this review as well; he's got a lot of nice little separate stories as well as his origin, which helps him feel more fleshed out.

Serrure is so cute! I think baby nocs are some of the cutest permababies, and I think they wear innocent eyes best c:. Skink is an underrated gene, I love the way it brings in another accent in a subtle fade and cool eyeliner! And his colors match well which is really lucky on a g1. Cute lil guy, 10/10, love this little trickster and I hope his life gets easier ;w; he's been through a lot. Khroma
