Biography

A E T T E L
GODLING OF TRANSFORMATION
♫ in flames - digital daggers ♫

Be fooled not by the soft, innocent look of this "child." Aettel was born of the Mother Gods, it's true, but... perhaps that should not make one so certain that They aren't something older, something unknowable, something more of the Valley Itself than of Godflesh. Rarely do They speak. When Aettel forms Their words, so softly and monotonously, all ears harken to the sound of Their voice. From Their lips spill words of prophecy -- or is it promise? Hard to tell, when Theirs could be the voice of Divinity, or the voice of Void.

It has come to be known that Aettel presides over Change, that ineffable process by which one thing becomes another. Ordinarily, such an amazing power as causing transformations in the lives of a clan's dragons would be great cause for celebration... but not quite so here. Though Aettel, as all the clans' Gods, is deeply respected and venerated, They are also feared. The first show of Their power came when They hit the cusp of maturity; a gangly and teenaged God, it was said, enticed ridicule from a dragon of similar age. Over the course of the next few weeks, the offender gradually transformed into a small tree with long, gnarled, fragile branches. (Some time after, it is also said, an immense thunderstorm overtook the Valley and set flame to the withered thing.) Not one dragon who witnessed such a thing is willing to give any more details. They just simple shake their heads and, if well and truly coaxed, may whisper,
"I've never seen such pain..."

Irony must be Fate's forte. Ever since the day that Aettel began to change those around Them, They Themself stopped growing. Though Their face is long, gaunt, and sharper 'round the edges than any young dragon's, Their body on its own can be (and is) easily mistaken for a fledgling's. One of the deepest struggles in Aettel's life is the fight to gain the respect merited by Their ancient and terrifying being.

This struggle is also compounded by the Mother Gods' resolution to keep Aettel isolated from the rest of the clan until such time as They are fully able to command Their power. After the "tree incident," Arconiste furiously questioned Aettel -- what had gotten into Them? Did They not understand the divine burden of responsibility that had been so tediously lectured to Them? Did They not appreciate the delicate balance between the Void and its Light upon which the survival of all these dragons depended? Aettel shrugged listlessly and said, "It was not meant to happen. I made no choice. He simply Became." The Mother Gods decided it was in everyone's best interest if the risk was removed of another hapless soul "simply Becoming."

Aettel has never changed. They may yet never change. They are wild, untamable, perhaps even more of a force to be reckoned with than Arconiste. Whatever They desire, They will obtain, no matter how great the pains, how long the time it takes. In fact, it could be said that They are the perfect combination of Patience and Force, their progenitors. As yet unbeknownst to the Mothers, They steal away into the dark while the other Gods rest. They will stop at nothing to obtain what They crave above all else -- connection with other dragons. A secret amongst the clan's dragons, one that they unknowingly share in common with each other, is that Aettel has appeared to most of them in the dead of the Void's Gloom seeking... companionship of a certain kind. Most often They are shooed from the den promptly, as any subject of the Mother Gods should fear Their righteous wrath. Yet still Aettel makes the attempt. It is all They think of.
