Eager to get some air that doesn’t smell like mildew and old meat, you wander the winding paths that branch off from the main den. There must be another exit for security reasons, right? Otherwise that’s just a fire hazard. Claws scraping. A low growl. Someone is nearby. You follow the sound, hopeful that the next dragons you meet will be friendly. Or polite. Or at least non-threatening, maybe. You are greeted by a pack of a rambunctious pack of Mirrors salivating for the hunt, shaking out their wings in anticipation. They flare their fans at each other, play-wrestling and growling like wolves. You wonder how they seem to get along so well without speaking. One Mirror's wings do not flutter, weighed down by a heavy, dripping goo that reminds you of the Matriarch. He is smaller than the others, deftly weaving through the crowd to meet you. They part to let him pass, almost instinctively. Weird. You wish to talk? Let’s make it brief, before my pack smells blood. I was the first dragon to join Sassa. I was driven mad with infection. Weak, and left behind. Crawling into the nearest hole to hide, or die. She offered me refuge, and taught me to quell the pain of wingrot. I searched for my kin when I recovered, but they had moved on. It is not a Mirror’s way to have a home. But there is something comforting about having a place to return to. It was time to start a pack of my own. I met Sassa before she was Matriarch of a mighty clan. When she was just a young Guardian nesting abandoned Banescale eggs. She was so different from me, someone who chose to stay still where I had only known movement. Mirrors don’t often mate for life. Once their hatchlings are raised they part ways, find a new mate, continue to wander in search of the hunt. I must be different. Or perhaps she is different, her complete confidence, the trust she puts in others, the home she has made in the wasteland… I’ve spent too much time talking. The pack is hungry. The blood beckons. |
