Jaehrik

First Mate

Jaehrik was born in the Lightweaver's Domain. Despite his love for his family, he kept looking out over the water. Entranced by it, he dreamt of one day going out to sea.
He couldn't bring himself to leave shore alone, though, afraid of the unknown.

Instead of leaving his family to go to sea, he moved to a clan closer to the Lanternlea Port. There he settled down, performing grunt work involving lifting and hauling, if only for the chance to carry items down to the port city on occasion.

Jaehrik was one day approached by Horus with a proposition; the other knew of a boat without a crew. If Jaehrik wanted it, he could join the crew. It was a tough decision, Jaehrik's loyalty to the clan fighting against his long-term desire.

He decided to take the opportunity, although he refused to lift a claw against the clan which had given him shelter. Upon meeting his captain, Jaehrik wasn't sure what to think of him. The other's personality was very different from his own.

Early Life

____Jaehrik grew up with his parents, both of whom doted on him. Despite their clan's earth-bound nature, Jaehrik would travel to the ocean with his father to play in the surf, imagining what it would be like to live on the water. Occasionally his father would take him out on a small boat, teaching him the skills to sail. When he was young his father passed away in service to the Lightweaver. While his mother tried to teach him to honor his father and celebrate his achievements, Jaehrik ended up running away from home, angry at his mother for her ability to move on so quickly from the death of her mate. How could she possibly take losing the love of her life in stride? He couldn't understand that, the tension creating a gap that he would never bridge.

____Rather than run to the sea, which he loved, Jaehrik made his way along the coast until he came across the moderately sized Hotaru Clan.
Joining for protection and supplies during the long winter, Jaehrik befriended a ridgeback who helped keep watch for the clan. While the two spoke often, Jaehrik's plans were still to leave the clan until Horus approached him with the offer of a position aboard a sea-faring vessel.

First Mate

____Though the vessel before him captivated Jaehrik's attention, he also focused on the dragon Horus introduced as the ship's captain. Jaehrik didn't know what to think at first, noting the other's suspicion. Still, because of Horus' obvious friendship with the nocturne he heard the other out. The other finally offered Jaehrik a position as his first mate. Although he accepted, it quickly became clear to Jaehrik that his skills and knowledge far outmatched the other. Still, he is loyal to a fault and will support Drake no matter what crazy plans the other concocts.

Sea Faring

____Initially saddened by the memories he has of being on a boat, Jaehrik quickly grew accustomed to the feel of the boat shifting under his claws as well as the swell and fall of the waves. The sea air emboldens him and despite his size he climbs through the rigging as easily as climbing a tree. Jaehrik loves everything about the oceans, save the storms which sometimes darken their horizon. In charge of most of the technical aspects of sailing The Howling Tide, Jaehrik takes his job seriously, often checking the ropes and other aspects of the vessel when stopped in various coves. He refuses to let his crewmates handle the wheel.

Granuaille

____From the moment he first met her, Jaehrik distrusted their new crewmate. Granuaille seemed nice but was always trying to ingratiate herself with the Captain. He kept an eye on her, trying to minimize the riskiness of her proposed adventures and outright vetoing the ideas which could bring harm to themselves or the ship. He knows she is plotting something, he just has yet to figure out what.

Personality

____Jaehrik is loyal to a fault and always keeps his word. He would never betray someone who has his trust or for whom he is in a position requiring said trust to be bestowed upon him. That said, he will stand up for what he believes is right, often vetoing discussions of pillaging. Having re-discovered his love of the sea, Jaehrik would do anything to remain on The Howling Tide, although he has no aspirations to be Captain. In his spare time, Jaehrik actually likes to read. He has become a frequent visitor to Luciel's library.

The Seafarer's Code: One of Jaehrik's favorite books, although he hasn't heard it since he was a child, listening to his father speak of a code of honor that belonged to a bygone day. He does his best to live by this code.

A Sailor's Guide to Knots: A book Jaehrik reads to help with his skills. He checks all the rigging personally after a sail almost fell on Drake. He uses many of the trick knots to ensure that others can't mess with his work.

A History of the Sea: Jaehrik finds the descriptions of the rather primitive sailing vessels to be interesting, often laughing at the writer's ideas of what these crafts would look like. How would they float, let alone sail, he wonders.

Diary of Rosyn Kern: The last days of the great explorer and seafarer. Jaehrik is fascinated by the gritty account of the various perils encountered by the crew. Some might think it a bit morbid but he learns from their mistakes. For one, always carry oranges...
