History

Balan's nest was laid when Tel had gotten her opalescent patches, but Edwin had not shown any signs of being affected by the Grove yet. They put the nest outside of the grove, as far away as they dared, to try to keep the single egg safe. He hatched with vibrant but ordinary colors, and no special patterns. But as soon as they brought him near the Grove, he reached out a tiny claw toward a tree and crack-like markings appeared on him, starting from his eye and working down his body and wings. He laughed, and when he opened his eyes again, they were shining like the sun.

On the day he hatched he was about the size of his father, but quickly grew bigger than the pearlcatchers in the clan. As he grew, it became apparent that he had an unusually large internal store of energy. In an effort to keep him from becoming destructive, Red taught him technique for controlling his blasts, and he quickly became adept at focused beams of light that could easily cut straight lines through wood and sometimes even through stone.

Skills and hobbies
Balan loves to be outdoors, move around, and learn about nature. He is a powerful flyer even among guardians.

He wants very badly to learn about the magic generator, but it belongs to the universities and minors are not allowed to interact with it. Edwin has promised to take him to see it in the future. In the meantime, Quar has tried to teach Balan about it from schematics, but this has not gone very well.

Clan interactions
His mother teaches him the ways of guardians, of the burden and joy of the Search and the Charge, and of being larger than nearly every other dragon or creature one will meet. His father teaches him the ways of learning, of other places and cultures and techniques.

He particularly likes competing against Hoji in flight. He's bigger than she is, but she has more skill.

He doesn't like Krovum very much, but he has learned to treat him with as much respect as he can muster.

Dunahe

This is an Afamiliar. For more information see the thread and my collection.
During his adolescent years, Balan became enamored with Borealis' birds and wanted a pet of his own. Furthermore, the more research on pets he did, the more he wanted a large pet that could also fly, and that meant a roc - the most dangerous creature known to Light dragons, and in Lightning territory to boot.

Edwin took him to a breeder of exotic pets in Sundial Terrace to distract him, but on that particular day the vendor had just returned from Carrion Canyon with two "rocdancers" - overgrown clouddancers with roc-like tails, nearly as large as Balan. The vendor said that he had never heard of keeping one as a personal pet before, only for show, but insisted that they were trainable.

The young guardian took to the male rocdancer immediately, and the two began to get acclimated. (Meanwhile, Edwin made a hefty down payment.) From then on, Balan was fully committed to training this creature well, reading books and consulting experts where necessary, so that it would behave well among dragons and thrive.

Balan named the rocdancer Dunahe ("tiny"). Dunahe mostly hunts for himself, both on the plains and in the river.

Like most creatures of Sornieth, once given enough time to bond with his dragon owner, Tiny has been able to learn commands with relative ease and is eager to please Balan. He also wears custom-made streak-style armor, because Balan thought it would look awesome. (It does.)

Trivia
His favorite food is apples, but he'll take any fruit or sweet food he can get his claws on in sufficient quantities.

He was named for a character in a story that Borealis was writing. Edwin sighed when he allowed it, but he knew it sounded good and that few other dragons would know where it came from.

He is smaller than his mother (more like the average length of a female), but heavier and with bigger wings (a bit big overall).

Description received from KalicoKat:
"Rocdancers are set apart from other Clouddancers by their resemblance to the large, fierce birds from which they derive their name. They are characterized by their enormous size and long, flowing tail plumes, which are used in elaborate aerial displays. While not all sport the head crest characteristic of the Rocs, those that do are perceived by their peers as having higher status than their slightly smaller cousins who lack this feature."

"also I'm worried that you will crush it" "nah, I want a BIG pet! as big as me!" ">_< there are hardly any animals as big as you in all of Sornieth" "nuh-uh, I want a roc!" "YOU MAY NOT HAVE A ROC."

other boss fams: pohip, burrow bear/dire claw, rockback charger/thunderstomp, whales, rat kings, featherback boars, hydra, those monkey things, yeti, crystal turtles, ghostlight spirits, wartoads, mantas, borers, forbidden toads; sure enough, rocs are the only ones that can fly (except the boars, which are gross)
