This trip was headed by Professor Kerner and attended by about a dozen dragons. As the guardian Telperion and her fae friend Edwin explored outward from the class' rendezvous point, Edwin sensed some strong magic, and the two followed it to a grove of magic-infused trees whose leaves glowed at the edges. As soon as Telperion saw it, she knew that this place was her Charge. When Tel told the class about the grove and how she was going to stay there rather than return to class, Edwin volunteered to stay and help her - and, surprisingly, so did a pearlcatcher named Cass. Tel only had to spend a couple of nights alone in the grove while the other two brought help from Cass' family, Edwin's colony, and Tel's parents. They all worked together to build a home for the three and get them started. The new territory was dubbed Brightleaf Ward, or just Brightleaf. As they settled into their new home, the three found the ruins of a mansion on the other side of the grove. It had multiple floors (sized for Second-Age peoples), and in the basement there was a large magitech device of some kind. Some material from the ruins was used in the building and maintenance of their own house. The first research team that LAS sent consisted of a botanist named Sonna, an archeologist named Copperclaw, and an alchemist named Luin. It turned out that Sonna and Cass had some unpleasant history, but they reconciled over time. Copperclaw was shocked at how intact some parts of the ruins were, and upset with the clan for disrupting them before they could be studied. He took veritable mountains of notes as he went systematically through the place. Meanwhile, Sonna studied the trees, Luin tested samples from both the trees and the ruins, and Edwin did surveying and cartography work. Tel and Cass took care of the group's needs that were not already covered by LAS. [/columns] [color=transparent]m[/color] [columns] While on a ley line inspection job, a Lightning nocturne named Quaranir found Brightleaf. The fluctuations he had been sent to study were coming from the generator in the mansion. Quar believed that the generator was made to produce a shield, but he could not fix it without parts, so he sent for his friends. Emry arrived after leaving Keloran for an unknown reason. Around this time, the tiny clan made a treaty with the nearby Serthis, which primarily involved placing boundary stones and giving the name Brightleaf to the clan and territory. During that time, Tel and Edwin continued building out the living space for everyone, Quar made progress on understanding the magic generator, and Luin was using LAS labs to alchemically test samples from the glowtrees and elsewhere on the property. In addition, Sonna learned that Copperclaw had been mysteriously fired from the project. [/columns] [color=transparent]m[/color] [columns] Luin returned to Brightleaf suddenly. The clan was surprised to see her, not only because they had not expected her return, but also because her prior blue coat and feathers had turned purple and shiny. She believed that this was a result of having stayed at Brightleaf, but in case it was contagious, she had decided to leave LAS. Before too long, others started seeing the effects: Cass got a bright blue opalescent spot on his formerly perfect antique-white side, and Quar's scales began to turn hard and translucent, glittering like a faceted gem. As if this were not enough chaos, Quar's friends Valour and Shipwreck arrived in response to his letter. They brought news that Quar was to be stationed at Brightleaf, along with the two of them, until further notice for the study of the generator. With the parts that they brought, they were able to make learn more about the function of the device. They theorized that the generator's shields protected the glowtrees from destruction at the end of the Second Age. It turned out that Copperclaw had informed the Beacon of the strange properties of the glowtrees. Laur inspected the research being done and decided that some changes were in order; not only were their academic standards not rigorous enough, but the presence of non-academics, and especially non-Light dragons, near such sensitive data was a risk to the entire flight. He wanted the entire clan to leave except for researchers, but Tel protested that she could not leave her charge and that she truly needed the help of the others to support her. While Laur sneered at her appeal to the notion of a Charge, he knew he would not have support for evicting all of them, so he dropped that point and deigned to merely stay and watch over the project. After a while in this uncomfortable situation, the physical changes from the magic effect of the region started to take effect in full force; all dragons present experienced some such change. Laur's eyes changed in addition to some of his scales, and this frightened him, so he returned to the Beacon in fear, but the changes ran their course anyway. Back at the Beacon, they had figured out how to change Copperclaw back with magic, so it was then known to be possible, but Laur changed his mind and decided he liked being shiny. Laur brought Aelius, a Weaver, back to the Brightleaf, to settle the dispute once and for all. Laur had fully expected Aelius to take his side and evict the out-of-flight dragons, but instead Aelius settled on a solution whereby the clan could remain but the academic project could be more separate from the clan's day-to-day life. Clan History

Old profile blurb
In the farthest southwest reaches of Sunbeam Ruins, sitting in the crook of the river, within shivering distance of both Hewn City and Tangled Wood, there is a vast stretch of redwoods. If you have someone magic-sensitive with you, they may notice some strong non-elemental magic as you fly over. Brightleaf Grove is the ward of Telperion, a young guardian, with the help of her clan. It is also of great interest to Light Flight's researchers. If you are trustworthy, the clan will allow you to visit. You may even want to live there, but if you stay too long, you will probably not leave unchanged...
A botany class from Light Academy South went on a field trip to an uninhabited patch of land in the southwest of Sunbeam Ruins.

Spirit and Gil arrive
Word gets around and several others join the clan
Krovum visits
Nocturnes from Hewn visit in the winter (Is this where Belladonna is from? But I have Lonan for a Hewn liaison)
The clan finds out about at least one other place like their own
Interaction with Emry's clan
Fire in the Grove
Note I found: "Arcane fae finds source together with Quar, becomes primal"
Interaction with riverglint Sylvia
Conclusions about the grove/generator:
Tel: "the Serthis say this place is cursed" Krovum: "now you tell me"
The Serthis got sick because of the type of magic it was
Hewn had a shield that turned into cover over darkness
By contrast, Brightleaf's magic effect is different for different organisms, but always beautiful
Thus, the generator originally was to make everything shiny and bright for the wealthy owners of this seaside property
Eventually, the generator gets moved to the Beacon with a containment field around it; dragons added to the clan after this point do not have to have the special genes

Geography
Its border is marked with boundary stones where natural landforms do not suffice
Its main entrance is marked with banners bearing the clan's emblem, the Light symbol inside a leaf
It lies on the river and has a small dock with a couple pearlcatcher-sized rowboats
There's a stream branching off of the river that goes through Brightleaf territory
An hour away from the Hewn City border
Two hours from the Tangled Wood border
Six hours from Light Academy South (a population center)
Near multiple serthis territories, though the serthis dislike the Grove
Airships may pass overhead
Barges pass by on the river
The generator sits on a ley line

First building
This building was the first one built by dragons on this land, and it was used as a general living space until the clan outgrew it. Now it is used for offices and the library, while other dragons live in more practical spaces.

The ruins
These ruins appear to have been a mansion owned by some of the beastclan-sized creatures that ruled in the Second Age.

Glowtree Grove
The trees are in neat rows like an orchard, with footpaths among them. It appears that the owners of this property in the Second Age tended the grove, and that it survived the magical explosion due to its magical properties.

The trees' leaves glow at their edges. They come in several colors: leaves of deep cobalt edged with bright bluesilver; leaves like bloodstone edged with ruby; leaves of emerald edged with peridot; leaves of copper edged with amber; and leaves like blackwood edged with pink chalcedony.

Fae are particularly enchanted with the place. They can sense its magic aura from a distance, and it superficially resembles descriptions of their origin region of Starwood Strand.

Living spaces
The clan's pearlcatchers and skydancers live together in large buildings. Other small-to-mid-sized dragons join them as needed.
Nocturnes have a hidden living space. Brightleaf has a rule forbidding clan members or visitors from attempting to determine where the nocturnes stay.
Large dragons sleep outside and keep their belongings in the storehouse.
Valour, the only ridgeback, has his own burrow just outside the area where the others' living spaces are.

Workshops
Several of the clan's residents are academics, who require space outside of where they live to perform experiments. There is a workshop building reserved for this. It includes Luin's lab and a woodworking space. The storehouse is also near here.

The Laurel Inn
The inn is a substantial distance from the Grove (the distance to avoid its effects was determined experimentally), along a fairly new road.
The inn has a shop where Yara sells items produced by the clan and receives shipments.

Post office
Currently staffed only by Shinai, who is awaiting a second worker to help him out.

Dear Krovum,

Good day, and a happy Riot of Rot to you. (Don't make that face, it's a joke.) It is fairly difficult for me to tell, from the wording of your last letter, whether you are actually considering traveling to Brightleaf in the near future, so I will write as if you are - and quickly, in case you leave soon. In either case, I encourage you to go.

I have a lot of information to give you about the Grove. It contains several matters of academic interest, which I had not mentioned before. The technology in those ruins has a few rune variations which were new to us at LAS, and (if I am any good at reading pearlcatchers' facial expressions) new to the Beacon as well; I would like to know if the Observatory was aware of them. Perhaps more important, since they will directly affect you, are the magical effects of residing in the Grove. It seems that the couriers are experimenting with new routing and had become lost for a day or so over the Shattered Plain, of all places. I was able to give him one of my emergency pick-me-ups, but his cheerfulness as he set off again did nothing to assuage my deep concern for the state of the postal service. I should very much like to write to the staff over at Reedcleft, but that would require use of the very service that I believe to be strained. Perhaps one day they will see the need for a more efficient system and turn to the ley line sciences for communication. In any event, I was glad to have a chance to think over your letter as I traveled. As I predicted, trudging across the Shattered Plain, though blessedly uneventful, was one of the most tedious experiences of my long life; the long, multi-legged boating journey from there to the Sunbeam River was not much better. If I had not stopped at a market near the harbor to purchase sunglasses, the glittering of light on the waters would doubtless have strained my eyes to the point of permanent damage. I mean no offense, as you know; it is simply the way of things that one dragon's beautiful landscape is another's misery. The mingled light and shade of the Grove was a most pleasant relief, and is doubtless one of the things that allows dragons of other flights to dwell there. And then, of course, there was much fuss over me when I arrived, and I was not able to get a moment to myself for a while. Everyone wanted to know who I was - not that they were satisfied with the answer, being ignorant of my prestigious heritage - and why I had arrived seemingly out of the blue without going through the proper channels. I calmly told them that I had applied to visit them through the Light university system, but that it would take time to process and I could not afford to lose that time. With more than one flight already potentially aware of this anomaly, the Observatory was anxious to get me there, if they would have me. Thankfully, most of them didn't mind my being there. Some grumbled about "freeloading", but I am willing to forage for myself. I do suspect that they might ask me to fish for them, since I have built a shack by the river to sleep in for the humidity. Now that I have settled in and met most of the dragons here, it is a good time to reflect and answer your questions. I have a few hours of daylight left to write, and then I plan to sit in the mingling of the sunset and the trees' light and attempt a sketch of the view for you. It really is extraordinary. As for clan membership, it seems your information was out of date even when you wrote your letter. Edwin plans to write to you as well with a full list, but I will summarize here. Brightleaf's clan has about two dozen members, the latest of which only officially joined three weeks ago. One of the more notable members you did not seem to be aware of is a gaudily colored Lightning mirror who goes by Ship; he assists Quaranir and Valour with study and maintenance of the shield generator and similar technologies. (Ah, the incessant struggle of the Stormcatcher's get to hold dominion over Sornieth!) It is not entirely clear to me what he gets out of this arrangement, since he runs with a pack of Light mirrors and does not eat the clan's food, but he seems to be good friends with the other two zappers and, to a lesser extent, with Cass. Your description of the academic situation here, by contrast, was fairly accurate. Telperion is a noble lass, but, as you guessed, not so interested in the pursuit of knowledge about the glowtrees beyond what it takes to nurture and protect them. In this she leans heavily on Lady Sonna, who (as one would hope) does an excellent job of balancing rigor with innovation and getting everything done by the end of the day. I have mostly observed Sonna's work from a distance and from reading her papers, since in person her praise of the Lightweaver quickly becomes tiresome, but I daresay many students at the Observatory could learn a thing or two from her. There are occasional hiccups, such as when Sonna's assistant's boorish guardian distracts them, but these tend to be minor and balanced by the usual Light eagerness to learn. [long] The things I have noticed about the clan members may seem strange to you. Perhaps for now I am just coping with my unpleasantly crowded living situation by trying to learn something from it; however, I find that the older I get, the more curious I become about the lives of ordinary dragons. No matter how much we learn about the underlying nature of reality, it is people who shape history and even the very planet we live on. On that note shall I take my leave. Professor Kerner
Light Academy South
Sunbeam Ruins

Dear Dr. Kerner,

I was fortunate to receive your last correspondence from a persistent young spiral shortly before I left on my journey for Sunbeam Ruins.

Things to put in the letter:
mentions of distinguished family members
mentions of his own titles, e.g. "being a Professor Emeritus has its perks"
skin changes
going to write an article for the Sunbeam Times about the Grove
going to write a paper about the impact of one of the Grove's findings on his own work
Krovum's trip went like this: ferry to Earth, walk across Earth, Nature boat, Light boat around the eastern coast and into the river.

Calendar reference, with my own additions:
five weeks of six days each in a month
four months in a year
twelve years in an era as in the referenced post

D.Mph. = Doctor of Metaphysics, a religious title IRL but an academic one here
D.Mg.Ph. = Doctor of Magic Philosophy, a title I made up
CMSO = Certified Magic Shield Operator, a certification I made up that he received from Quaranir and Valour at the Grove
Esq. = Esquire, a courtesy title IRL that used to indicate a member of the gentry but doesn't really mean anything anymore

Krovum is prejudiced toward most other flights, only really appreciating Light (scholarship) and Nature (swamps). Some of the terms he uses for other dragons are rude and should not be repeated.

Aelius' report

Dispute Resolution Report: Department of Information Quality vs. Brightleaf Clan

Section A: Background and definitions
  1. Background of the location
  2. Map of the territory in question
  3. Clan members at time of dispute

Section B: Description of dispute

The plaintiff demands that all residents of Brightleaf Ward not belonging to Light Flight (henceforth "non-Light dragons") be removed from its land immediately and permanently, and that no further non-Light dragons be allowed to reside there.

This demand is made on the following grounds:
  1. The artifacts there are of critical importance and cannot be removed from the area at this time.
    1. Second Age shield generator
    2. Ruins
    3. Glowtrees
  2. Non-Light dragons cannot be trusted near these artifacts.
    1. They may be spies.
      1. Lightning is known to be against Light.
      2. Lightning has been known to be aggressive.
        1. Light is elementally weak to Lightning. Some actions that would not otherwise be seen as aggressive are rightfully seen as aggressive when carried out by a Lightning dragon upon a Light dragon.
      3. Shadow is known to be against Light.
      4. Shadow's motives cannot be fully discerned.
      5. Water is believed to be neutral toward us.
    2. Non-Light dragons do not have our philosophy concerning artifacts.
      1. Lightning wants to change its environment while we want to preserve it.
      2. Shadow seeks to conceal, while Light seeks to expose.
  3. The aforementioned concerns are of such high priority that they override claims of sovereignty over the land and the clan.

The defendant party refuses the demand on the following grounds:
  1. To banish these dragons from the land is to banish them from the clan.
    1. Telperion has a registered claim to the land. Arguably, she also has a natural claim to the land on which her Charge resides and some reasonable parcel of land around it.
    2. Telperion has a natural claim to sovereignty over the clan, and she wishes these members to remain in the clan.
    3. Therefore, these dragons must live near Telperion's Charge in order to remain part of the clan.
  2. LAS granted Telperion the final say over the research of the artifacts.
  3. The impact of the three non-Light clan members on the artifacts has been low.
    1. Quar has interacted with the artifacts in a professional manner.
    2. Valour is not interested in the artifacts. He hunts for the clan and spends most of the rest of the time in his own den; according to Telperion, "All he does is hunt and take dirt baths and tell jokes."
    3. Emry is not interested in the artifacts. She spends much of her time napping and beautifying her living space.
  4. Telperion vetted Emry by visiting her former clan; she came to the conclusion that this clan had rejected Emry, and that was the reason for Emry leaving.
  5. Brightleaf Clan has made a reasonable effort to preserve the artifacts within Brightleaf Ward.
    1. Clan members are not permitted in the ruins unless for academic purposes.
    2. Quaranir has been taught techniques of preservation, which he has quickly learned and used.
  6. Expertise like that which Quaranir has is required for proper understanding of these artifacts.

The defendant party also wishes to note that Nature dragons pose a similar elemental threat to Light to that which Lightning dragons pose, and yet many Nature dragons are employed in Light's university system.

Story:
Luin wants to go to Lantern Corridor to buy some selenite and asks Cass to go with her "because you look like you've been in a fight before". The selenite there is both less expensive and higher quality.
On the way there:
* this darkness is different from the Tangled Wood; in Shadow you can feel in your bones the influence of a deity not your own, but here you are in the Lightweaver's domain, yet everything is dimmed
Some things they see:
* cloth sold much less expensively there than in Mirrorlight Promenade or wherever the front is
* shady dealings
* lots of dragons just trying to make a buck
* weapons. lots of weapons

Story-like:
Tel writes about her mother's advice to her, which she would pass on to any and all guardians. Perhaps in the form of a letter to her guardian children.

Other story ideas:
Quar with Emry's clan
