E C H O "THE YEARNFUL” Aqua Ripple | Aqua Current | White Underbelly “Echo, the nymph of Cithaeron, returns thy words, which resound beneath the dark vaults of the thick foliage and in the midst of the rocks of the forest.”

Up on the wild, lonely mountains of Greece lived the Oreades, the nymphs or fairies of the hills, and among them one of the most beautiful was called Echo. When Zeus wanted to come down to earth and wander with the nymphs on the mountains, he’d enlist the help of Echo. If ever Zeus' wife Hera came too close to catching Zeus in the act, Echo was to distract her with an endless stream of pointless prattle until Zeus had finished. But at last, Hera realized that Echo was doing this on purpose to detain her while Zeus went quietly back to Olympus as if he had never really been away. "Your tongue has made a fool of me!” Hera shouted at Echo. “Henceforth, your voice will be more brief, my dear! You will always have the last word, but never the first!” |
From then on she could not speak for herself. She was condemned to trail behind others, stealing meaning from their last few words. Devastated, Echo fled to the earth. By chance she saw a lovely young man named Narcissus and fell in love with him at first sight. She yearned to speak to him words of love, but the curse which Hera had placed upon her tied her tongue. She could only follow wherever he went, hiding behind trees and rocks, and feasting her eyes vainly upon him. Finally, a moment came. Narcissus and his friends went hunting in a forest when he became separated from his friends. Narcissus called, 'Is anybody here?' |

Echo joyfully stole the word “Here!” “Then come to me, come to me!” Narcissus replied. Happily, she ran to him and put her arms around him. But, he pushed her away and exclaimed “Get off me! What are you? I suppose like all the others you love me.” "Love me,” Echo said. ”Love me.” "I would rather die,” spat Narcissus, “than let you lie with me.” "Lie with me,” she said as she desperately tried to convey her love. “Lie with me.” |
"Leave me alone,” Narcissus exclaimed as he ran away. “Alone,” wept Echo. “Alone. Alone.” Poor Echo was a slender thing. Her sorrow made her slighter still. She became spindly, bony, pale, gaunt, feeble, frail. Heartbroken, Echo begged to be killed. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, heard her and was kind to her, for she had been a true lover. Quietly and painlessly, Echo pined away and died. But her voice lived on, lingering among the rocks and answering faintly whenever Narcissus or another called. Only her voice survived, hiding in caves, hiding among high hills. |

In the end, Narcissus wept alongside the riverbank, yearning for his love home was his reflection. He said, "You, please, come to me. Lie with me. Love me. When I laugh I see you laugh. When I smile you smile. When I cry you shed tears. You give me every indication that you love me and yet we do not embrace. I think I understand: I am in love with myself. Always we will be together and yet always we will be apart. I have loved you in vain." Ad Echo took the words: "I have loved you in vain. I have loved you in vain." |
