There was something not quite right with the window. Lena grumbled as she maneuvered the myriad of tchotchkes on the sill, her tail swishing in annoyance. How long had she stared at this particular corner of her home? The sun was low on the horizon yet the massive Imperial continued her fussing. Was it the Tidelord sackdoll? Perhaps it was the stardust sap lamp. Stepping back from her project, she glared at the window suspiciously. There were no visible imperfections to the glass nor its frame. The wind and cold did not seep through. Lena huffed in annoyance, her eyes flicking from the window to the tchotchkes and back. It was wrong, she knew without a doubt, but why? She took another step backwards, absently knocking over pillows on the chaise behind her. A shiver of apprehension raced through her as she suddenly noticed darkness of her home. Hadn’t it just been late afternoon a second ago? How had she missed the sunset? Blinking in mild confusion, the Imperial decided to start her dinner. As Lena began preparing her favorite meal of pan-seared frilled eel and dwarf mushrooms, she cast a furtive glance over her shoulder at the window. Unease had begun to settle in the pit of her stomach, spreading its creeping tendrils along her midsection and down to the tips of her claws. It took her a moment to realize that the smoke was coming from her burnt eels. Another low grumble escaped her as she quickly lifted the eels off the heat and scraped what she could salvage into a bowl. The window. The thought caught her as abruptly as the darkness. A scowl drifted across her face as she lifted her gaze back to the window. Across the table, the window stared back. By the time Lena remembered the half-charred meal of mushroom and eel before her, it was cold. The unease was beginning to grow into terror as she scarfed down the rest of the dish and hurriedly tossed the bowl into the sink, refusing to cast another glance at the window. Soft, morning light coaxed Lena from her fitful slumber. The familiar sense of dread coated her limbs as she opened her eyes to the window. The Imperial grimaced and quickly shut them again. No, this wouldn’t do. A home was meant to be peaceful, relaxing and Lena felt neither. Tap, tap, tap…. Lena’s eyes snapped open at the sound, scanning the interior of her home rapidly for its source. A chill reverberated through her bones when her gaze fell upon the window. The tapping grew insistent, accelerating its pace. She was sure the tapping was coming from the window but there was nothing on the other side. The Imperial quickly scanned the rest of her home, afraid that if she stared any longer at the window she would only lose more time. Curtains. That was it. It had to be. Lena vaulted off her bed, knocking pillows off once more, and scrambled to gather the edges of the dire pelt rug in the living room. Tchotchkes forgotten, she cleared the sill with one swift motion and hastily nailed the pelt into place. A welcomed silence fell like a heavy wool blanket across her house. Tentatively, Lena took step back and regarded her impromptu decoration. Wasn’t quite what she had planned, but the tapping had ceased and her nerves began to settle. The unease that had gripped her only moments before melted away with the arrival of the makeshift curtain. Odd, she mused but thought nothing more as she gingerly picked up the lantern and sackdoll she had haphazardly strewn across the floor in the process of hanging the curtain. Pivoting, she approached the window in the kitchen and gently placed her tchotchkes on its sill. Light streamed welcomingly through the smaller, slightly dusty glass and over her countertops. Lena sighed in relief and stepped away from the sill, tilting her head slightly to scrutinize the placement of he belongings. Satisfied, she turned her attention towards breakfast. 'Well,' she thought to herself as she made a diced gar omelette and roasted some sweet potato vines, 'I suppose I don't need that much natural light...' | __ |
