CREATION MYTHS
Great Ennead
The Ennead is a group of nine deities worshiped at Heliopolis since the Old Kingdom. The major deity is the sun god Atum, together with his children Schu and Tefnut and his grandchildren Geb and Nut. Furthermore his great-grandchildren Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys. In many myths the son of Osiris and Isis, Horus, was added to the Ennead as well.
Atum is said to be a self-begotten god who rised from the primal flood. He created the primeval mound, so he could step on the first land: Heliopolis. Atum is said to be the sun god and is later also equated with Re. Sitting on the mound, Atum produced the air, Schu, and the moisture, Tefnut, out of his body fluids.
Shu und Tefnut fell in love with each other and mated to produce the earth god Geb and the sky goddess Nut. But because Schu considered the relationship between Geb and Nut as a sin, he separated the lovers, creating the duality of the world.
However Nut became pregnant and gave birth to two gods, Osiris and Seth, and two goddesses, Isis and Nephthys. Osiris and Isis became a couple which represents fertility and order, while Seth and Nephthys represent chaos.

Important Gods
Ogdoad
The Ogdoad is a group of eight deities worshiped at Hermopolis since the Middle Kingdom. Other than in Heliopolis there is no major deity but four couples of gods created by the sun god Schepsi: Nun and Naunet, the god of the sky and the goddess of the primordial watery abyss, Heh and Hehet, personification of infinity or eternity, Kek and Keket, personification of primordial darkness, Tenem and Tenemu, personification of pathlessness. In other myths Tenem and Tenemu were replaced by Niau and Niaut (emptiness), Gereh and Gerhet (shortage) or Amun and Amaunet (invisibility, air).
These pairs summarized their powers and created a new god, the sun god Re. In this myth he is depicted with the head of a cat, also called Miu ("the tomcat").

Important Gods
Memphis Theology
In the Memphis Theology Ptah is considered the main god. As the patron god of craftsman he had the power to not only imagine but also shape raw materials to create the imagined product. He imagined the world within his heart and was able to create it. After that he began producing gods, human and all other things just by saying their names.
Ptah fell in love with the lion goddess Sachmet and both conceived a child, the lotus god Nefertem. Together they are the Memphite Trinity.

Theban Theology
The Theban theology is convinced that Amun is the hidden force behind all things, he is beyond the sky and deeper than the underworld. In the Theban Theology Amun even created the Ogdoad and Great Ennead while the call of a goose. After this act he was separeted from the world and concealed from the world and the other gods. He became the ultimate source of creation, all gods and wanne-be creaters.
Even though Amun is said to be hidden even from the other gods, he fell in love with Mut and conceived a son, the moon god Chons. Together they are known as the Theban Trinity.

WORLD VIEW
In Egyptian belief the world was a flat piece of land, personified by the god Geb, over which arches the sky, represented by the goddess Nut. The limbs of Nut are standing on the corners of the earth. Every morning Nut is giving birth to the sun god Re, every evening she absorbs him and Re will enter the underworld, Duat, where he has to fight against Apophis so he can born again by Nut. This is the daily circle of the sun.
The earth was devided by a small line, the holy nile river. The sun and the stars move along this line. The Egyptians lived in the center of the upper world and around the nile. Their neighbors were the Hittites, Hyksos and sea people in the north, the Red Sea in the east, Nubians in the south and the bedouin of the Libyan Desert in the west.
The whole world was guided by Maat. Maat is the cosmic order that distinguishes the world from the chaos that surrounds it. It was the task of the human pharao to reign the people so they will abide the rules of Maat. This cosmic harmony was personified by the goddess Maat, wife of the god of wisdom, Thoth.
