Apophis is an serpent-shaped Egyptian deity who embodies the chaos, dissolution and darkness. Some ancient texts said that he stretches about 15m in length but since he has so many twists in his body, he might be even longer, which is why the people gave him the title World Encircler. Apophis is living in the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, where he is not able to harm the living. Even though Apophis likes the chaos the most, he also is quite fond to women - no matter if they have two legs or scales.

Apophis is the antagonist of the sun god Re. Every night, when Re is traveling at his solar barque in the underworld, Apophis attacks the sun god, to interrupt his travel to bring chaos over the world of the living. Apophis' eyes are said to have hypnotic features and only Re is able to resist them. A lot of gods tried to kill Apophis but none of them really was successful since he is a symbol of rebirth. Even though the gods tried stab him with a spear or to dismember his body, he was unable to die.
Since Seth is trying to help Re surviving in the Duat, Apophis does neither like Re nor Seth. This might be the reason why he has chosen to serve Isis, Osiris and Horus. Apophis has a paternal friendship to Horus who has a little copy of himself as a pet snake which the falcon god asks for advices from the old serpent god.
