The Lily-Infected
Reserve Clanguard

"You needn't worry about the lilies. You'll have more important things to worry about if that becomes a problem."

Seeing this large guardian approach leaves no doubt where he comes from. While not quite skeletal, there's a leanness to him that speaks of muscle born from hunger and struggle, a stalk that permeates his every movement. One doesn't need to see his eyes to know they're Plague-red.

Goldfoo invited him to join the clanguard after encountering him at the market with his then-hatchling daughter Kuzuryu. He'd traveled from the Scarred Wasteland to provide a better life for her and the story touched the family-oriented imperial. He was polite, almost soft-spoken even, as the little ridgeback climbed him like a tree. His strength was clearly satisfactory and his demeanor likely to fit into the clan and they needed urgently more guards following the shadow assault. The only concern about inviting him was his charge.

Hiko's charge are the flowering blood-red lilies rooted under his skin, their vines creeping from under scales to cling to his sides. He found them blooming from skeletal remains around Rotrock Rim, was drawn to them, and had hosted them even before he had his daughter. They didn't hurt, he assured Goldfoo, and while they could be passed to another dragon, it had to be through combat, open wounds, and even then could be removed before they grew too deep.
....Even with those assurances, Goldfoo offered him a temporary position, provided the clan's naturalist and medic gave him the review and okay.

Lily was... not quite upset. The opportunity to study a parasitic plant from the Scarred Wasteland was rare, especially with a...compliant and pleasant host. Nature doesn't get that chance often. That said, it was still a parasitic plant growing out of another dragon!!! Thomas confirmed that it hadn't impeded his nutrition; he was light for a guardian but it was hard to tell what of that was from living in the plaguelands. But Lily did find that its roots ended in his bones.
Hiko was right that she couldn't coax it to grow through her skin, so it was probably safe for the rest of the clan, so long as no one picked a fight with him and went untreated. The intimidating guardian was approved to join the clanguard.

As Goldfoo filled the clanguard ranks with more dragons, including Hiko's own daughter, he eventually told Hiko he was going into the reserve guard, alongside the borderguard. He didn't mention he was the only dragon besides the borderguards who was on reserve, but those flowers....

Hiko had been slowly declining while in the clan. Or perhaps they'd only noticed it over time. Enishi spotted it first. The diligence with which he could stand guard for hours at the edge of the clan wasn't the same way a warrior would. He'd still notice movement, noise, light shifting, so none of the others saw it, but on his rounds, Enishi was small enough and sharp enough to see his eyes go blank, almost trancelike like Moros. Despite eating as much as the other guardians, he never lost the wasteland-thin build. He spent time sunning the lilies, huge wings like trestles for them to climb, and Lily was at least glad she only needed to patrol the lair for unusual sprouts rather than the whole clangrounds.

---

For now, he seems in control of himself. Goldfoo doesn't want to have to exile him, especially with how Lamorai stares at the guardian.
