Umbra

Backstory: Umbra grew up in the VeroKitty Clan with her older sister, Intru. Intru had been—in many ways—the ideal daughter. She was always polite and never played rough. Umbra was always reminded to be like her sister, but that never quite stuck with Umbra. The snapper dragon loved to blast heavy metal music at full volume and play dirty. Still despite Umbra’s vast differences from Intru, the two siblings were the best of friends and the ultimate dynamic duo. Although, once the sisters reached adolescence there lives started to drift in two different directions. Umbra began training to one day serve the Shadowbinder and Intru went to Daybreak Academy (a school located in the Sunbeam Ruins that focused on teaching young dragons how to be skilled writers and historians). Of course, Intru visited home often. Although, Umbra started to notice subtle changes in Intru’s personality whenever she returned home. Her older sister began to smile less and less. She no longer wanted to compete in snapping contest against Umbra. With watering eyes, Intru would sometimes stare off into the distance. No one else noticed these tiny differences in Intru’s personality except Umbra. Umbra asked Intru what was wrong countless times. Her older sister would say she was fine or just dodge the question. Umbra’s suspicions were confirmed when Intru’s messenger owl brought a letter to Umbra. In the letter, Intru told Umbra that she loved her and that she knew Umbra would do great things in the future. Umbra showed the letter to her parents and they called Intru’s letter “sweet”. Although, Umbra didn’t like the letter because it sounded way too much like a goodbye. Umbra dug a tunnel to the Daybreak Academy the next day. No one seemed worried about Intru and that bugged the heck out of Umbra because she knew something was wrong with her sister. When Umbra arrived at the Daybreak Academy, she began looking for her sister. Eventually the snapper dragon got desperate and burst into a class. She demanded the teacher tell her where Intru was. The teacher said that Intru had fallen ill and was currently in her dormitory. As the teacher was talking, a pearlcatcher by the name of Rythell got up from his seat and offered to take Umbra to her sister’s room. The minute the teacher shut the door, Rythell looked Umbra in the eye. “Intru isn’t sick or at least not in the way everybody thinks,” he told Umbra. Umbra eyes went wide as she said, “What do you mean?” Rythell then explained to Umbra that Intru had been physically and verbally abused by his younger brother, Damian, for some time. Rythell said he had only figured out what was his brother had been doing a couple of days ago. The pearlcatcher said he had tried to talk to Intru and convince her to find help, but Intru was afraid that Damian would do more harm to her if she spoke up. Rythell had reported his brother’s crimes to his father (who was actually a king of a distant land) and the school board, but none of the dragons had done anything about his brother yet. After hearing this, Umbra and Rythell ran to Intru’s room. They found Intru lying on the ground face down. Umbra had checked her sister for a pulse. Her sister had a faint pulse. Rythell had been looking around the the room and found poison on the shelf. It was then that Umbra realized her sister had poisoned herself. Umbra knew she had to bring in Intru to the Aquafire Clan’s healers who where well known for their ability to heal dragons completely in seconds. Umbra and Rythell carried Intru to the Aquafire Clan. However, Intru died only a few feet from the entrance to the Aquafire Clan’s liar. In the days that followed, Umbra stayed in the Aquafire Clan. She hated her family and everyone else who hadn’t noticed the depression Intru had had all along. She hated herself for not being able to save her sister. Rythell swore that his brother would be punished for what he had done, but Umbra wanted to be the one who punished him. Although, Maruna convinced Umbra to make something positive come out of this by raising awareness about the mental illnesses and bulling. Since that day, Umbra has been working hard to teach other dragons about suicide, depression and bullying.

Personality: Umbra is a true tom boy. The snapper dragon has little volume control and becomes especially loud when her beliefs are being challenged or her clan members (from both the Aquafire Clan and the VeroKitty Clan) are under fire. Umbra is a daring dragon and isn’t afraid to take risks. Although, Umbra has a lot of anger, grief and self-hate buried inside of her that only Diablo knows about.

Familiar: Hedwig is a timid owl that Intru had found with a broken wing when she was a hatchling. Intru had nurtured Hedwig back to health and trained him to be a messanger owl. After Intru passed, Umbra made it her duty to protect the owl. Hedwig is Umbra’s faithful companion and helper. The owl typically perches on Umbra’s shoulder and never leaves her side.
