Biography
Gaou is a cynical, distant, and political dragon who manages the clan's accounts. A native of the Great Furnace, his chosen metal with which to work is gold. Now, when not doing the tedious work of administration and record-keeping, he makes fine jewelry out of whatever metals and ores catch his eye. (Though gold is his favorite, an artist shouldn't limit themselves.) He has a very keen eye for beauty and collects all sorts of things that meet his aesthetic standards. He came to Clan Lambent before the Lightweaver made it known that Imperials had fallen out of her favor, and he misses the way things used to be. He was once close friends with Reznin, who grew more and more distant after the Lightweaver's proclamation before eventually choosing to hibernate alongside many other of Clan Lambent's Imperials. For many years now he's been waiting for something to break. There's been peace for too long, and privately he worries that Sornieth has grown complacent. It is a land too comfortable with its gods, and its gods are too comfortable in their heavens. If nothing else, the tensions between Imperials and Pearlcatchers within even just Light's lands will one day lead to bloodshed. And while Gaou may be a cynic, he isn't a sadist, and he has no love for conflict. It's one of the things that drove him out of the Ashfall Wastes -- where the viciousness was too much for him -- and attracted him to the Sunbeam Ruins. He hoped a Dragonflight dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge would be less tumultuous, and the Lightweaver did create Pearlcatchers... He was one of the first dragons to join Clan Lambent after meeting Alcaeus, whose paranoia he profoundly respects. Gaou's innate Pearlcatcher haughtiness has served him well in Light. He considers himself above the distaste other Pearlcatchers have for Imperials (though before the Lightweaver stated her disappointment, he disliked them generally -- Gaou is, at heart, a contrarian.) His natural cynicism prepared him well for the politics of Light, and the few rumors that have spread about the treasurer who also loves gold have been swiftly refuted by Gaou's meticulous book-keeping. Though not all dragons of Clan Lambent are required to profess allegiance to the Lightweaver, Gaou does. In truth, his worship of, and service to, the Lightweaver comes less from a place of reverence, and more from a place of jaded hope that if any god in Sornieth can forestall disaster, it will be her. Gaou's religious observances led the Imperial Gilded Sun, who was once Reznin's mate, to seek out his company. Gilded Sun was once vain and pompous and especially superior in regarding Pearlcatchers, so much smaller than Imperials! Since the Lightweaver's proclamation, Gilded Sun has changed. He is now obsequiously devout and agonizingly self-conscious about his species' failure to please the Lightweaver -- an angst compounded by his own affinity for ice, rather than light, by birth. Gaou does not feel any similar proportion of religious intensity or guilt, but he tolerates Gilded Sun's company and often puts him to work. The jewelry that Gaou makes is truly beautiful, although it has an intensity that some of the philosophical Light dragons find somewhat off-putting. Gaou's work is where his Fire-borne intensity is most obvious. Gaou keeps his finest pieces to wear himself, or to give away, and sells or trades other pieces. The amber-colored ring that Gilded Sun wears was a gift from Gaou. No one has asked Gaou, and he would never admit it, but, well, Gaou does collect beautiful things -- one might notice that Gilded Sun himself is, without a doubt, beautiful. Gaou may have figured out what administrative tasks Gilded Sun can help him with which guarantee the Imperial's glimmering crystal form will catch and reflect the light. 2022-12: 1/6 with these colors, 1/1 unexalted
