Biography

Kaoru
Wizard of Weaponry
Chaotic Neutral

PkKAmaj.png
Like a regular wizard, but every spell is sword.

Arcane magic is a wondrous thing, promising amazing power to those who have the skill, potential, and luck to delve deep into its mysteries and come back still vaguely recognizable as a dragon. Some mages realize great powers, gaining the power to obliterate their enemies or warp reality to their whims. Some are overcome by the raw energy, becoming gibbering wrecks, mutated monsters, or mildly radioactive dust scattered to the winds. Others... are Kaoru.

Not that Karou's a poor mage. In fact, he's quite skilled. It's just that his skills are focused on problems that probably didn't need magic to be solved. For example, by crushing the bones of a wraith hound, sprinkling the dust onto some apatite, and performing a incredibly complicated ritual, Karou can create an effective replica of an ordinary steel sword. Except that it's far more expensive, and dissipates into a fine powder after a few days.

And that's the other problem. All Kaoru knows is weapons. But not how to use them; just how to make temporary copies of them. Well, that's not entirely true. Karou knows the secrets of an ancient blood ritual, where the sacrifice of a weapons-master can be used to imbue another dragon with their skills. So, theoretically, Kaoru could use those weapons. But as far as he's concerned, killing someone to learn how to swing a sword around without any of the hard work is just a bit excessive.

And really, he's just not that into practising. Sure, he'll carry around a spear or two, but putting in the work to get good at using one doesn't seem worth the effort. Karou doesn't want to stab anyone anyways — he's not that kind of dragon. And he's got short little arms, no good for swinging a sword. He's got excuses for days, so stop pestering him about doing something useful for the clan.

Anyways, he's already got the important task of giving Sindok relief from his unwanted gaggle of wind spirits. The two dragons have bonded through their shared experience of having impressive but useless magical abilities. Also, if Kaoru shouts enough about how his summoned swords can even cut apart intangible elementals he can usually scare them away for a bit. Only for as long as it takes for the spirits to forget his threats, but Sindok is grateful for any respite.

Recently, Sonja's shown some interest in Kaoru's magic, claiming that the fact that the weapons disappear is actually a boon. Kaoru's not sure why that is, but he doesn't really care; he's just happy to have found someone with a use for his skills.

Since his specialized magic isn't often called for, Kaoru has a lot of spare time. He spends much of it training the clan's familiars. He's not the greatest at it — and as a matter of fact he spends a lot more time being chased around by the familiars than training them. Still, he's worked miracles with the few creatures that he's managed to train. Weapon-based miracles. You might not think that teaching a buttersnake to wield a battleaxe is a good idea (or even possible for the matter), and you might be right. Kaoru disagrees. Or he would, if he wasn't currently being hunted by a fiendcat with glowing pink knives strapped to it.

Romerio gave Kaoru his helmet. The ridgeback had some reasoning behind the gift, but it was completely incomprehensible to everyone except him. Kaoru treasures it anyways.
