Biography

Math Velazquez
Pitcher for the Spies
Chaotic Neutral

Math Velazquez: The best zero star pitcher there ever was.

While there are many dragons in Clan _______ that could have appeared from that portal in the basement, Math in the only one that the clan is pretty sure did. It's not even that they seem that otherworldly. Sure, a few things are off about them — for example, they have more fingers than a normal fae, and nobody can quite agree on many they do have. Yet, that doesn't even make Math that unusual by arcane standards. But even so, they're clearly not from here, and they couldn't have come from anywhere else, so proof by contradiction states that they must have fallen up out of the portal. Math agrees — mostly just because they like proofs.

When Math first appeared, skulking around the fortress, they were captured by Tryggvi and presented to Minya for interrogation on suspicion of being a spy. Math freely admitted to being one, which caused quite the alarm until it was determined that they were actually a member of a sports team called the Spies. (Math insists that sports is pronounced splorts, another sure sign that they're from a world beyond the portal.) As such, Math was released on probation. Then they were re-apprehended a few hours later, because they're also a regular spy alongside being a sports player. Honestly, the fact that they wear a trenchcoat, hat, and sunglasses at all times should have given it away more quickly.

Eventually, Math agreed to be a double agent for Clan _______ and was released from their cell in an undisclosed location in the fortress basement. They're clearly loyal to their old team over the clan, but after Elliry confirmed with his interdimensional aberration that it was impossible to send Math back where they came from (apparently, somebody exists in the space they used to occupy), they were deemed to be no danger to anyone. Also, Math isn't in a rush to leave yet, as they claim to have been sent here on a mission to acquire negative stars. Nobody's really quite sure what that means, but nearly any arcane dragon would naturally be quite excited to find out. According to Math, odds are if they do find negative stars, there'll be enough to go around for everyone. Thus, they have the support of the clan, despite any misgivings Minya might have.

On the sports side of things, Math played blaseball back where they came from, which is apparently a ball and stick game a lot like one that wildclaws play. Except with more incinerations, constant rule changes, and dangerous weapons being used to hit the ball instead of sticks. So, a lot like the version of the game wildclaws play in the Starfall Isles. Supposedly, Math's role on the Spies was to throw the ball and do absolutely nothing else. Except, according to the wildclaws they played a few games with, Math has basically no pitching skill whatsoever. It's actually quite tricky to hit their pitches due to sheer unpredictability, but anyone watching Math would conclude that they've never thrown a ball before.

Usually, Math can be found crunching numbers to assist other dragons in their research. They're a very enthusiastic test subject, and willing to be the victim of all sorts of unethical experimentation. Apparently, they've calculated every possible outcome of this heedless risk taking to be positive. If the experiment works, then they get the benefits of whatever science was going on. If things go horribly, horribly wrong, then the debilitating side effects will bring them ever closer to their goal of being the worst at sports. Math's predictive models have shown that being impossibly bad at something is how you reach the negative stars, by breaking reality to a point where you create a situation suitable for them to exist in. This seems fine.

To add more confusion to the ever-growing number of rumours surrounding Math, they believe that they only speak in mathematical formulae. This is clearly untrue. Math is quite good at mathematics, but they speak draconic just as well as everyone else. They claim to have proof that actually everyone else in this world is also speaking in math, but also that it's classified info so nobody's allowed to see it. Considering that that's Math's answer to nearly everything, the clan has learned to be skeptical of most things they say. Just how Math likes it.

The only thing Math has been seen using their ice magic for is creating iceballs to throw at other dragons. This is slightly more impressive than their pitching of regular balls, because their magic can influence ice in midair and cause it to follow a complex mathematically-calculated trajectory. Throwing a snowball at a guardian is still about as effective as you'd think it would be.
