Dragon Log

Daughter of Wind and Light influenced by Plague, born under the Arcane stars, there are elements of oddity and paradox about her entire being. It is no wonder, perhaps, that she chose a name and a familiar to reflect a time not only of a time “between” but also of upheaval and the flipping of the natural order. Yet she has a sweet nature, and a love of all things magical, that has endeared her to all the Clan. She was born an “outsider,” the third of a group of hatchlings that included twins, but she did not stay that way long...

11-7-17: While her “twin” sisters are still trying to decide whether or not they would like to stay or return to their parents’ home den, this little one has made her choice…and found her name. Meet Saturnalia, daughter of the paradoxical elements!

1-30-18: It's Saturnalia's first Festival! Well, the first one she could go to, anyway. And she is having a bit of trouble getting used to it...

The young Guardian stood stunned, staring around her. The sights, sounds, smells...it was almost too much. Flexing her wings, Saturnalia considered her options. She was NOT going home. It was only a little snow and cold...well, a LOT of snow and cold...and wind, and noise, and crowds....the Arcane dragon winced. "Admit it," she thought, "you're scared." She blew out her breath, watching in shock as it became visible in front of her for a minute before it faded. Now what?

"Nalia! Child, what on Sornieth are you doing out in the cold all alone?"

Saturnalia turned as the Clan Father hurried up to her. Moondust did NOT look happy. "Of all the irresponsible....when I get my paws on those two, too focused on having fun…not caring about their duties to the younger drag--Child, you're freezing!"

Breaking off his muttering, the eldest Tundra of the Clan quickly conjured a heat spell for his young Clanmate, banishing the biting cold Saturnalia had been trying hard to ignore. With a sigh of relief Saturnalia unfurled her wings completely, feeling muscles she hadn't even known were cramped begin to loosen.

"I wanted to see the Festival, Father," she amitted softly, "I know I’m young for it, but I heard others talking….but now...it's all so big, and loud, and different..."

Moondust studied the newest member of the Clan, worried. Saturnalia was not usually this thrown by new experiences. Her magic, after all, was focused on upheaval and paradox....Hmmm...now THERE was an idea...

"Come with me, Child," he said softly. “I believe I know a game you will like..." The Clan Father gently coaxed his Clanmate through the crowds, pointing out things of interest as they walked. Soon, Moondust could see the sparkle returning to Saturnalia’s wide eyes. By the time they arrived at the Fortune's Game of Wit and Luck Saturnalia was her usual happy self...and Moondust was mentally listing a number of unpleasant tasks to assign to whichever dragon had committed the unforgivable sin of abandoning the Clan's newest member to try to navigate a Crystalline Gala all on her own....

Oh dear, it looks like a few dragons are going to be doing extended latrine duty for a while...but at least Saturnalia has found something she can have fun with, right?

2-18-18: Saturnalia enjoyed herself immensely at the Crsystalline Gala--once she got over her shock at the cold and crowds. She is now eagerly awaiting the Trickmurk Circus, which seems to be even more up her alley, based as it is on trickery and illusions…and so perhaps, on paradox and flipping things around? Regardless, it sounds exciting, and she can't wait!

In the meantime, however, she does have an event of her own to celebrate: Tipsy, her Wooden Marionette, has Awakened! Nalia is absolutely thrilled at this, and watching with interest to see what the strange puppet will do with his newfound maturity. So far he seems to be using it to frustrate older dragons of the lair, turning up in unexpected places, and refusing to dance when they want to entertain the younger ones. But being that the dragons he is particularly interested in happen to be the pair that abandoned her at the gate of the Gala, Nalia isn't that unhappy by this turn of events...

3-28-19: Naila has decided try out another Festival, and has headed into the Windswept Platuea, to catch a balloon to attend the Mistral Jamboree, and the Cloudsong Celebration. And now she has found something fascinating to watch—accompanied by her Clanmate, Moldavite--and perhaps a new magical teacher! ( , )

Oh boy…This could be a problem…or maybe, just maybe, Saturnalia has found some help for balancing her differing magical affinities? It wouldn’t be the oddest thing to happen in the Clan, after all…

3-29-19: Unfortunately, Saturnalia did not get the help she sought for her magical control. She did, however, get some rather interesting additions to her personal hoard—and wardrobe—courtesy of the next performer to come along… ( , )

So all is well that ends well, at least for Nalia. It’s a matter of opinion whether that mage is as happy, but at least he is no longer being hounded for answers that he clearly did not have…

6-19-19: The now almost commonplace magical surges are continuing to "assault" the Clan, causing quite a few magic auras to appear in the visible spectrum. The latest phenomenon has the Clan stumped, however. Although everyone accepted some time ago that Saturnalia was a mage, it was thought that her only true proficiency was in Arcane Magic. It seems, however, that she might have some links back to her parents' unusual background, as not one, but four haloes have appeared around her head, and the Luminous Halo, Aerborne Halo, Spellwrought Halo, and Contaminated Halo all seem to be interwoven together, as if it would be impossible to have one kind of magic without the others...

2-18-20: Saturnalia was sunning herself outside, enjoying the unseasonable warm weather, when she saw an odd little creature snuffling around the cave entrance. Upon investigation, she discovered that the Clan’s Peacevine Ardvark had been confused by the temperature switch, and accidentally came above ground before Winter ended. Nalia only intended to help him out, but when she locked eyes with him, she felt something odd…

...Oh well. At least he’s friendly. And his habit of hibernating during the summer does fit with her own paradoxical magic…

5-17-20: "Topsy", Nalia's Peacevine Arrdvark friend, has Awakened! Or, at least, has become mature...just in time for him to fall asleep for the Summer. Ah, well. No doubt they'll have some fun when Winter comes again, and they can explore the Clan's extensive cave network together. In the meantime, perhaps Saturnalia can figure out why the Awakening of her companion appears to have summoned a strange Tawny Aardvark to the Clan--hopefully without bonding with him this time...

9-7-20: The Tawny Aardvark was not interested in bonding with Nalia--or with anyone, actually--and has taken up residence in a secluded area of the Hoard. In the meantime, Saturnalia has begun to explore the areas around the caves, looking for exciting new magical possibilities. For the past few days she has been accompanied on these journeys by the Clan’s Terra Tortoise, who seems to have taken a liking to her for some reason…

12-2-20: Nalia has been enjoying her explorations in and around the Clan’s cave system, and has enjoyed even more the companionship of the Clan’s friendly Terra Tortoise during these expeditions. It is, therefore, no surprise to the Clan that the friendship between the two has progressed and evolved into a full familiar bond. It seems, however that Saturnalia herself was caught rather off-guard today, when the Terra Tortoise Awakened and started to glow with energy and excitement. Apparently, the odd Guardian Mage really hadn’t realized how close she and “Turvey” were becoming, despite the fact that the name he chose for himself was an obvious attempt to fit in with her little familiar “family.” Ah, well, she knows now. And no one could be happier than this dragon-tortoise pair is to celebrate this latest step in their friendship…
