Listen. Can you hear it? It lies between every note, softer than anything you've ever known. It's sweet, like sunsets touched with flowers than unfurl by night, and it's warm, like the weight of a familiar blanket draped over your shoulders when the winter chill closes in. That warmth, that sweet comfort is rest.
Photios knows better than most the value of a well-timed pause. It can create distance by hesitation, or closeness through its weigh. A simple pause can speak volumes in the right ears, and as a musician, he must be keenly aware of where the music takes its leave, if only in brief moments. Music is made better for it, he believes, because every pause grants the audience to savor the notes more deeply than before.
But lately, he has a hard time practicing his belief. The chords must keep moving, the music must keep flowing, and nothing may stay still. If he stops for even a moment, it will all catch up with him in a rush, hot and blinding, and all the work he's put into staying ahead will be for naught.
Once, life was not so fraught, and he was prone to rest, but that was before the accident. That was before he paused in the middle of his song. That was before the explosion.
It wasn't his fault, not really. It was chance, it was poor planning. Asked to play at a funeral to honor an old friend, Photios couldn't refuse. He also couldn't have predicted the response of the graves, how they burst into the sun, granite headstones raining down as dragons arose from the dead, just as they were in life save for their souls. And he couldn't have imagined the beast that was laid to rest beneath the very altar where he stood, not until its eleven heads rose above him, roaring loud enough to bring the heavens crashing down.
His music brought an emperor to life, and he has yet to forgive himself.
He does not know how it was vanquished. Perhaps the Lightweaver herself intervened. Perhaps all of the deities did. But he only knows that he crawled from the rubble craving light and sound and movement, because the moment he stops, he knows that something evil will catch up with him.
His only solace lies in song. It is the one thing he has not completely lost, and though he is afraid to stop, he can bring the notes to life like never before. When he plays with all his heart, the music comes alive, painting itself through the air in living color to show the soul behind the music. It is the clearest expression of his very essence, and he clings to it with all he has.
