to kill a worker of the stormcatcher is a sin. and somehow, this isn't.

do you know what it's like to starve? nevis does. and it wasn't always like this.

she was born highland to free parents, nevis' docile childhood was not long. the farm is always hungry for dragons to feed to the machines, and it was only a matter of time until nevis' meager clan was swept up by the slaving parties and taken in chains.

if you can believe it, even for a second, nevis was once a sweet dragon. but something about desperation makes a monster of us. even now, after all these years, and the things that she has done, if asked she still says she didn't deserve any of this.

every day she watched dragons get eaten by the gears, watched the slavers laugh at mangled hands before cutting them off. nevis was not old then, and she had already seen so much blood. she lost her mother, her father, a whole swath of siblings, before she brewed up any sort of plan worth her salt. she isn't the only one that wants to leave, of course. so she gathers them, she arms them with flimsy knives made of machine parts and moxie.

and someone snitches.

to this day she doesn't know who did it. and to this day she'd have their throat if she ever found them. all she knows is that she's ripped from her bed while the stars are still bright in the sky. she is dragged out into the courtyard. and she is made an example of.

she is expecting the whip. she's expecting them to take a few strips off her hide and send her back to work. she doesn't know that the slaves have been adding straws to an already sagging back. hers just happened to be the final one.

when the priest comes, she is expecting to the shocked, or scarred, or anything else than what actually happened. when the magic hit her, it doesn't hurt. not at first.

the hunger is unbearable.

at first all she wants to do is cry, so she does. there is a sort of hopelessness that comes with being that hungry, so starve on the spot. she sees leering faces, feels the fear of her brethren.

she turns her head and bites a guard's hand clean off.

in the lands of the stormcatcher, murder is one of the most heinous crimes. not for loss of life, or the trauma to others, no. because the dragons of the expanse are is property. to take a life is to steal.

but nevis is so hungry. when the guards finally manage to pull her off of her victim, there is not much of him left to save.

they toy with slaughtering her. then, nevis was still at least half a dragon. they thought they could control her, use her as a weapon, a scare tactic, a disposal method. they lock her in a cage, feed her three times a day. it's not enough. it's never enough.

by the time she snaps, they haven't even put any of her uses to motion. they open her cell door and it is a bloodbath. she is not small, and the frenzy of starving left her wild and desperate. she doesn't know this, doesn't realize, perhaps, that in the chaos a lot of slaves escaped. in some twisted way, she did accomplish what she set out to do.

the remaining are too scared of what they made to even kill her proper. they knock her out, and drop her in the boneyard, where all flights banish what they can't control.

there is hardly anything to eat in the wastes. even for a dragon such as nevis, who had already eaten dragonflesh in her frenzy. there are no plants, few animals, and less dragons. she starved and starved and didn't die. eventually she chews off her own leg, hunger overtaking pain, and uses her own bones to make a new one.

Nevis chewed off her own leg in the frenzy of her first few weeks of her curse. Nevis is not part of the clan - I only see her from afar, very rarely - but she has made herself a prosthetic that exceeds expectations considering her way of life and the materials at hand. She shows her Lightning roots occasionally it seems. Her body condition is very poor, but she has certainly not lost any of her strength.

The curse placed upon Nevis was done so by a Lightning priest, which are very few in these days. Old Lightning magic had the ability to reenergize and give astute focus. Essentially, Nevis was cursed to burn far more calories than she should, and be focused intently on the hunger.
