about.
every so often, a babe is hatched without their parent's curse. and they will still love them, in their own way; they were cursed to fight for scraps like animals but not to love like them. at this point they have layed dozens of eggs and loved every one, not chasing away anything that sprung forth from their union, only letting them go as they wished. waladli was the exception to this rule. their mother is a wild, catastrophic thing. she hunts and she kills and she eats and she is never satisfied. waladli is the eldest of five siblings, some of which share their parent's hunger, so they never take the first bite of a kill. so their mother doesn't really notice until they are gown that they never take a bite at all. they're not hungry. that instinct to eat never took root, certainly didn't grow into that ravenous thing that has their parent by the throat. and in a rare display of maternal rage, nevis chases them across the boneyard until their legs buckle and they can run no more. and then she leaves them. there are things you can do, when you don't need to eat. walking for days, weeks - that is one of them. it is not a good idea for you to let the clans of the wasteland sink their claws into you if you are but a single dragon. so waladli does not go there. when they stop, it is only for somewhere to lay their head; a group of merchants, just passing through, perhaps, or even one of the tiny contagion clans, willing to trade whatever waladli had on them for a tent. but once they found out what they could do, the requests started. could you take this to my mom? i haven't seen her in years. this letter, to the red imperial across the boneyard. please, i need them to know. going close to wind? toss this into the gulch there would you? i can't...i can't do it. and they do them. they do every request asked of them. the feeling they get after one of those messages is sent is warm like a campfire, and they love it. to land somewhere where they would get to keep doing it is what they are searching for, and until then, they roam. |
