"They can because they think they can."

The night was cloudless and clear, providing a near perfect view of the bright stars above the Outpost. It's residents slept peacefully, not a noise to be heard other than the odd snore or snuffle.

Almost.

Armani wasn't the kind of dragon to settle for just "near perfect," nor had he ever been. From the moment of his hatching he wanted it all: the best prey for him to eat, the best clothes to adorn his god-like scales, the best mentors in the clan to teach him everything he ever wanted to know.

And he would have it, even if they said he couldn't.

So was it on that fair night, when little Armani wanted to see those stars without troublesome trees blocking his gaze. The caretakers would be furious, he knew (especially since this sort of thing had happened many, many times before) but those stars, that dark violet sky, those swirling galaxies beyond; they called him. So, really, it was a easy risk to take.

A faint whistle caught his attention, quickly followed by a booming crash. Something fell just over the hill. He should turn around, run home and tell Eden a meteor had landed near the cave. But why not handle it himself? Then everyone would know how mature he could be, and they'd let him leave whenever he liked. Yes, that was the most logical course of action. Armani nodded decisively, and tumbled clumsily over the rise.

A mass of rock was alight with pink flames, burning the grass around it into a black, charred patch. He peered curiously at it. Maybe it was one of the meteors the aliens came down on... Ooh, then he could bring it back as a new familiar! Or maybe it was one of the ones the bombers used to deliver gifts in. The tension in the air mounted as the spiral stepped closer and closer.

Thunk. Tap. Tap.


Raaarrrrrrrahh.

Armani jumped back just as a large, round figure rolled out of the rock. It raised it's head and surveyed the area carefully. Then it stumbled out farther, shaking debris from it's stoat body. Then it unfolded it's wings, and finally Armani could see what was so strange about it.

It had two scaled wings, pearly white and shimmering like the moon itself. And... it had two more wings, rose pink and feathered like a bird's. It's legs, spines and face had markings that appeared to resemble a nebula.

She gave a chirrup - he decided that it was a she - and flapped all four of her wings. She looked at them with the same expression Armani wore, probably thinking the same thing: How peculiar.

Suddenly she turned to him and smiled.
