Darla

"No one has ever become poor by giving."

No one was quite sure about Darla when she arrived in a meteor that night, but they did know that she had to be something special. Darla wasn't sure what she was, either, but she was open to suggestions.

In any case, Armani almost immediately disliked her. She was clumsy and childish and always insufferably optimistic. After she came around, no one paid him as much attention anymore. Was he jealous? Of course not. Who would envy a snapper? Her scales weren't nearly as shimmering as his. And he was the most graceful hatchling to be hatched in years; his mother told him so.

But Darla, as she always was and would be, wanted nothing more than to be friends. As much as Armani tried to leave her, she'd always be back, grinning and laughing that sweet, booming laugh of hers and shaking her pink-tipped tail like a happy hainu...

Armani refused to believe it. He liked her.

This realization caused a sudden, spontanious shift in the young spiral. Darla became something like a younger sister to him, and he was incredibly protective of her. She was brilliant with astronomy; she seemed to know every constellation in the night sky. So Darla and Armani became an inseparable pair, to become the best astronomers the Outpost had ever seen. In Armani's opinion, at least. Darla was content being anywhere under the stars with Armani. She's still the only dragon he'll ever admit to loving so greatly, and even then with some reluctance. But her love in him is unconditional; it always will be. She will always be there for him, to cheer him up when he gets too serious, and he will always protect her. Simply being with Darla has made him a kinder, more understanding dragon, and he doubts he'll ever be able to repay that.
