Blake, Part 1, Volume I
Unwanted memory.

~

He jolted awake. Looking around, the Pearlcatcher glanced wildly around an unfamiliar and dimly lit room. As he tried to move, he discovered that it was impossible. When he struggled, he felt his body bound in rope. Wriggling his claws on his paws and feet, he started panicking when he realized that he wasn’t holding anything.

“Looking for this?” a deep voice rumbled.

Just ahead of him, Blake saw another paw grasping a large pearl.

And that voice...he’d know it anywhere. Blake struggled against the ropes frantically.

The other voice chuckled. “It’s no use, little drake.”

“Please,” Blake’s voice trembled, “give it back!”

“I will. Just not yet. You need to pay for what you’ve done.”

“I didn’t do anything!” Blake wailed.

“Of course you did. You saw what we were doing to Rocky.”

“’We’?”

“Yes,” another voice hissed, a female’s voice.

Blake widened his emerald eyes. “You! Why are you doing this?”

“You know too much,” the male answered. He held the pearl up higher, closer to his face so that he could inspect it better, and laughed when he saw Blake strain to reach it.

“Please...just let me go,” Blake pleaded.

“We will, don’t you worry. But first...” the female then turned her attention on the other male, “would you care to do the honours?”

“Certainly,” the male beside her rumbled.

Blake’s heart caught in his throat. “No...please, no!” He thrashed against his ropes. “You don’t know what you’re doing!”

The female laughed. “Of course not, but we’d love to find out.”

Blake could only watch helplessly as the the paw that held his pearl hurled it towards the floor. His heart stopped just before the pearl made contact with the ground, and when it did, a scream escaped him. Blake begged and wailed as he watched the other male’s paw repeatedly smash the pearl just out of his reach. Tears streamed down his crackled face and his voice soon turned hoarse. When the huge dragon ceased smashing the pearl, Blake cried as he saw the other dragon raise the pearl again to get another look at it.

“Hmm, it seems as though these pearls are unbreakable.” The male then chuckled. “But I don’t think the same could be said for you,” he told Blake.

The Pearlcatcher slumped to the floor, his eyes closed. He wanted to cry more, but he’d cried himself dry.

When the she-drake lowered her head to Blake’s, the Pearlcatcher croaked, “I promise...I won’t tell anydrake...

“We know you won’t,” the female smiled. When she brought a single claw to Blake’s body, he flinched as the she-drake sliced through the ropes, releasing him.

When the male beside her rolled the pearl towards Blake, the Pearlcatcher grasped the sphere tight to his white chest as he still lay on the floor, sobbing.

“But,” the female continued, “if you do, we’ll hunt you down. We will explain to everydrake that it was you all along. That because of the savage history of Mirrors, of course a Pearlcatcher would make poor Rocky act aggressive to make everydrake rid Sornieth of them. Because everydrake knows what cowards you are, they'll know it's the only logical explanation.”

Blake tried to lift his head, but he was too weak. “I would never do that to—”

“And who are they going to believe?” the other male asked.

Blake opened his mouth to respond, then closed it in defeat.

“That’s what we thought.”

...

After he’d been released, Blake was escorted to his room. The halls were dark, and everydrake else must be asleep in their own rooms, for there were no other souls in sight.

Remember our warning,” the other two dragons whispered to him.

Blake slowly nodded before they left him, and the Pearlcatcher trudged into his room, and closed the door behind him. Making his way towards his bed, he climbed up on top of the blankets and lay down, his pearl beneath his chin.

His stomach suddenly heaved.

No...not now!

Blake tried to hold it back, but he was too exhausted to fight it. A thick, black mucus had been regurgitated onto the pearl. He tried frantically to rub it off, but he was too late. The mucus had already hardened and turned smooth.

He could only stare at his pearl for several moments. His body shaking, Blake slowly closed his eyes and silently cried himself to sleep.
