Hazel, Part 1, Interlude
A new beginning.

~

“I'm so glad you both agreed to meet with me tonight,” Quill thanked Blake and Hazel as the Pearlcatchers took their seats across from the blue dragon. As Quill adjusted his seating, Blake gave Hazel an encouraging nuzzle before addressing the blue Pearlcatcher.

“How did your interview with Dewlap and Trove go?” he asked him.

Quill shifted in his chair, unsure how to answer. “Uh...well...”

Just yesterday, the blue dragon had met up with the old wizard and his wife, Trove, who had finally agreed to answer any questions Quill had for them.

“So how did you two meet?” had been his first question for the older couple. But only silence followed, and Dewlap and Trove just exchanged solemn glances.

“Was that the wrong question?” Quill asked, ducking his head, disappointed.

“I'm sorry, Quill,” Dewlap finally said. “I don't think we're quite ready for this.”

Snapping back to the present, Quill plastered a quick smile on his face and answered Blake, “It went...great.” Clearing his throat noisily, he addressed the splashed dragons, “Why don't you start with whatever feels comfortable for you?” he asked Hazel, preparing his ink and claw.

And Hazel began her tale...

One year before...
runaway Willow

Icy rain pelted the Sea below. There were no flashes of lightning or booming of thunder. There was nothing except the cold rain mixing with her tears. Hazel flew over the vast, empty Sea, tears streaking her face.

She wouldn't go back. She couldn't go back. There was nodrake there who loved her...

She faltered for a moment when something in the distance ahead caught her eyes. It wasn't Flotsam Town, and she sighed weakly with relief, almost faltering again. What she saw was a little island, and through the downpour she saw mostly sand, and a small grove of trees. Her wings were tiring, and she lowered to land, gripping her satchel strap.

Hazel's claws and feet sank into the damp sand as she headed for the shelter of the trees. Raindrops found their way through the leaves as she hung her head, her tears still falling as she wept.

She heard a soft plop on the ground beside her, and she sniffled, peering down. It was her necklace that she'd stuffed into her satchel before she left her home. There was a small tear where it must have fallen out, and her heart skipped a beat once she realized she had almost lost it. What if it had fallen into the Sea? Lost forever? Hazel quickly scooped it up with trembling paws, flipping the pendant over to read its familiar words carved into the back.

When you feel torn apart,
keep me close to your heart

Sniffling again, Hazel closed her eyes, squeezing out more tears and held the pendant to her chest. A green glow began to bathe her face and something nuzzled her cheek.

A moss-green deer, no bigger than she, gazed solemnly to her, and a trail of light flowed between the creature and the pendant. Her familiar. The deer began to walk away, just ahead, then paused, looking back to her over one shoulder.

Did it want her to follow? Hazel rose to her feet, ducking her head as she stayed close behind. It wasn't long until they were at the edge of the grove, emerging onto a vast stretch of beach. Hazel's eyes followed the deer's gaze, and she froze, shrinking back.

In the distance, loomed a massive stone castle.

She hadn't seen it through the downpour when she had come in to land, and her heart thundered in panic. What if there were other dragons there? But if her familiar wanted her to go there, should she? What if she didn't? Nodrake back home wanted her, so why would anydrake else?

The rain soaked into her mane and scales through her hood and cloak, and she shivered, making up her mind.

...

Astraeus and Aerico were on guard duty, taunting each other to see who would go back inside the warm, dry castle first, pride and stubbornness keeping them out in the sopping rain. But what they saw before them now silenced their bickering.

The stranger was shaking, from fear or the damp, or both, they didn't know. Aerico twisted around to open the main doors and darted inside, soon returning with another dragon. The silver-and-purple Skydancer introduced herself as Feather to the newcomer, and brought her inside.

When Feather asked for a name, Hazel only murmured her answer, pulling her cloak and hood closer. Feather spoke of the available rooms for her to choose from, leading Hazel upstairs.

They passed a few doors when a loud clatter from behind startled Hazel, and both she-drakes turned to look back. Another Pearlcatcher had knocked over a suit of armour that had been propped upright before. His emerald eyes locked onto Hazel's and they both froze, staring at each other in surprise.

Feather gently scolded the other dragon, Blake, to be more careful, and to place the armour back. Blake mumbled his apologies before putting the helmet back on last and disappeared around the corner. Feather beckoned for Hazel to follow again, and when the cloaked dragon looked back once, Feather noticed and smiled to herself.

Both she-drakes reached the first unoccupied room, and Feather showed Hazel inside. It was spacious, with a wide bed and a windowed view that overlooked the Sea, away from where Hazel had flown in from. Feather informed her that the large dresser next to the bed held extra clothes in its drawers if she needed them, and that she could ask the seamstress, Sweetstep, for more if nothing in the dresser caught her eyes. Feather also invited her down to dinner, which would be starting soon, if Hazel was hungry, but she only murmured thanks, and the silvery Skydancer quietly shut the door on her way out, leaving Hazel to explore her new room.

Bu the splashed she-drake only stood in silence. She pulled her hood back, and more tears trickled down her face. Her familiar appeared once more, but the Pearl sniffled, not meeting its gaze.

What if you're wrong about these dragons? she thought to it.

The deer stepped closer and nuzzled her cheek. Just give them a chance. You'll see.

...

Hazel had slept through dinner the previous night, and didn't wake until the next morning. The rain had stopped, and warm sunlight streamed through the windows, and she startled when a knock rapped on her door.

Leaping out of bed, she threw on her cloak and pulled the hood over her head, stepping quietly but quickly to the door. When she opened it, she looked around but saw nodrake. Her nose twitched when a sweet aroma drifted up, and she peered down.

A big tray of food had been left at her room. By who?

Quickly, she brought it inside and closed the door.

...

Days passed, and whenever she left the privacy of her room to explore, Hazel always kept her hood up and cloak on. When she saw other dragons enter the same hallway, she ducked her head and hurried by as they greeted her warmly.

When she left the castle walls to wander the beaches and the rest of the island, Hazel pulled back her hood to feel the cool breeze rush through her mane.

And today, she noticed Blake staring at her.

She hadn't heard him coming. Before he could speak, Hazel wrapped her cloak up tighter, spinning until she vanished from the beach.

Reappearing back in her room in a flurry of petals, she rushed to the door and slammed it shut, locking it with trembling claws.

Blake had seen her. He'd SEEN her! Without her hood on! Her mind raced as her heart thundered against her ribs.

Hazel, calm down, another voice soothed to her. The deer.

She didn't know how much time had passed, and she flinched when she heard a soft knock at her door. Blake's voice was quiet and muffled from the other side, though she could still hear what he was saying, and it confused her.

Why was he asking if she was all right?

Perhaps he cares about you, the deer thought.

But Blake didn't even know her. None of them did.

So are you just going to ignore him?

Hazel didn't know if that thought was the deer's or her own.

Her breathing and heartbeat steadily slowed, and she stepped over to the door, opening it. Blake peered at her with worry and curiosity in his emerald eyes. What he asked next also shocked her.

He wanted to know what other spells she knew. She answered with a mumble that she knew some, but disappearing from other dragons was one she used most. Blake chuckled, now looking at her shyly.

He laughed! Not at her, but at what he thought was a joke, and she smiled back. Hazel stepped aside and asked if he wanted to come in. Blake looked flustered for a moment, then accepted her offer, his eyes brightening.

They discussed the magic of Sornieth, and Hazel even taught him some of her spells, which he'd still need to practice more. When she grew flowers full with petals, Blake stared in awe.

“They're so beautiful, Hazel,” he breathed.

She froze.

Your flowers are so pretty, Hazel!

Yeah, more than you!

You should try a scales-changing spell instead!

The other voices rang in her mind, mocking her. Her heart and mind raced again, her legs shook, and she heard nothing else but the laughter.

Blake gave her another concerning glance, and before he could say more, Hazel whirled around and fled out of her room, tears streaming down her face as she threw her hood back on, leaving Blake alone and confused.

...

She gasped for breath as she ran along the beach, tears falling to the sand, and she reached the island's little forest, darting between the trees. She slid to a halt once she was out, staring across the vast Sea.

That was where she'd come from. The Viridian Labyrinth...through the Tangled Wood...arriving to a tiny island somewhere in the middle of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, where her aching wings had given up on her.

She sat, hanging her head, not knowing what to do. She did know that going back to the Labyrinth wasn't an option. But where else could she go? What if dragons elsewhere were worse?

She heard somedrake calling her name over the wind.

Blake!

Her heart sank. She felt terrible for running off on him without any explanation. Drying her tears with one sleeve, she rose to her feet and paced back through the grove. She saw Blake wandering the beach and looking up into the sky and calling for her, stopping when he finally saw her at the edge of the trees.

Relief spread from his face down his body, and both splashed Pearls trotted towards each other, locking their emerald eyes. Blake apologized for making her leave.

Hazel was sorry, too. Heaving a sigh, she explained.

“Hazel,” Blake started, staring in disbelief, “you're the most beautiful dragon I've ever seen.”

Her expression now mirrored his. “Really?” she barely whispered.

“There's nodrake else like you, and you're talented with magic. Those other dragons don't know what they're talking about. And,” he added, looking hopeful, “would you teach me some more?”

She pulled back her hood, and returned a smile.

Present...

When Hazel finished her story, Quill thanked them both for their time, closing his notebook and wishing the couple goodnight before heading out the door. Before getting ready for bed, Hazel nuzzled Blake, and she whispered in his ear. He startled, his eyes turning big and round with wonder.

“Are you sure?” he asked, returning a whisper.

She nodded and hushed back, “I went to see Aura and Alyss this morning to be sure.” Blake nuzzled her in return, taking her in his arms and wings.

Hazel was with egg.
