Seastar, Part 1, Volume III
First memory.

Blake never imagined he would have felt fear tremble through his body at this moment. When he watched his daughter struggle out of her egg, the first thing that rang in his mind was pink. Immediately he was ashamed of feeling such a thing. How could he let his own child’s colours remind him of...him?
He could hear that monster laughing at him now. What that Spiral had done to Hazel was unforgivable, yet she would never know. Blake just couldn’t bear to tell her that horrible truth.
His emerald eyes watched Hazel sidle closer to the small bundle on their bed, and she nuzzled her cream splashed nose into the tiny fluff of mane. The baby opened her mouth in a smile up at her when she’d finished dining on the last of her eggshell.
“Isn’t she perfect?” Hazel hushed, looking back to Blake.
Blake slightly slumped his shoulders and breathed a small sigh, moving closer and lying right next to his mate and child, smiling back to them. “What should we call her?” he wondered.
“I was thinking of ‘Seastar’.”
Blake reached over and nuzzled her head with his own. “Then Seastar it is.”
Their attention soon turned back to Seastar again when she squeaked out a yawn, closing her blue eyes and curling up between them. Blake’s smile stretched and his white chest swelled with pride. Being born must be tiring work, he mused, and he sank his head deeper into his pillow as Hazel did the same, covering their daughter with their splashed wings before drifting off to sleep themselves.

...
They woke during the night to the sound of soft coughing. Blake and Hazel sat straight up and their eyes flew open and fell on Seastar, the more she coughed, the more forced and choked it became, and a single tear trickled down her small face as her throat bulged.
Blake’s heart hammered in his chest, but he forced his breathing to slow when Willow gently nuzzled him before turning back to the little bundle.
“It’s okay, little one,” whispered Hazel, gently patting one paw on Seastar’s back. “Let it come.”
Seastar choked and wheezed and gasped heavily still, until now they could see something large, shining and white from inside her small mouth. Hearing her parents’ encouraging voices made her push harder, and the smooth orb finally slid from between her jaws and onto the blankets. More tears followed the first as her throat burned from the effort, and she wailed up to them.
“Oh,” Hazel hushed, pulling her closer. “I know it hurts, but it’s here now. Cherish your memories, my love, for they are yours only.”
Blake felt a sudden grief grip his heart at her words, but he immediately pushed it away and forced his eyes upon the little bundle between them.
Seastar sniffled, letting the last of her tears fall before opening her blue eyes again, and they wandered to her pearl. Reaching both paws out, she grasped the jewel and hugged it close, looking it over curiously. Finally her eyelids drooped, and yawning again, she curled up around her orb, waiting for sleep to carry her away.
Blake snuggled closer to her, also waiting for Hazel’s eyes to close first before shutting his own tight.
I’m so sorry, he thought, looking back to Hazel. I’ll always love you, he added silently to Seastar before turning to his mate again, but you can’t know what Aster did. Or what I asked Dewlap to do...
