Biography

Atuin
Rogue Wizard
Chaotic Neutral

PkKAmaj.png
Atuin is a wanted criminal in 10 out of 11 flights. In Arcane, his actions are seen as normal and often encouraged.

He's a treasure hunter, always looking for magical artefacts, whether or not somebody else already has a claim on them. This has lead him to a variety of lost ruins and tombs, along with the private libraries of many a sage. Of course, each successful adventure gives him more tools for the next, although he's hit the point where it's hard to keep track of what each spell does. During one library heist, he tried to defend himself by creating a book golem only to send the whole place underwater. And then all the submerged books caught on fire. Although he almost drowned, Atuin escaped in the confusion with the hat of a long dead archmage, so he'd be willing to try that tactic again.

His motivations are curiosity, not greed or a lust for power, and Atuin really doesn't see anything wrong with what he does. However, the variety of dragons that he has swindled or otherwise stolen magical secrets and artefacts from don't particularly care about his reasons. Thus he's chosen to use the fortress as a base of operations, so that he has somewhere to hide from those looking for... "compensation".

Of course, the rest of the clan gets exclusive access to these treasures, so many of them are more than willing to let him stick around. Tolmac is one of these dragons, and easily the most useful as far as Atuin is concerned. A small bag full of treasure and the much larger dragon will scare off those hunting for him. In addition, some of the ridgeback's more incomprehensible duels are quite entertaining to watch. Musical blindfolded checkers, anyone?

A few dragons have suggested that Atuin really doesn't do much in the way of actual wizarding. A quick display of his skills is enough to shut them up, and not only because they'll have found their jaws mysteriously glued shut. And yet, there is some truth to that. While he has developed some spells of his own creation for the purpose of purloining artefacts, Atuin's thirst for knowledge is mostly quenched by stealing other dragons' breakthroughs. He really hasn't done much in the way of delving into the secrets of magic with his own claws. Not that that'll stop him from believing he's the greatest wizard in Sornieth. But it might come back to to tie him in a figurative (or literal) knot one day.

As a consequence of his forays into hidden magics, Atuin has a habit of picking up a variety of curses. Some are mostly harmless and easily dispelled. Some are less so. Such as that amulet. It's never coming off.

Atuin also attracts mimics, due to one, or possibly many curses. Nobody likes mimics, but getting to listen to Atuin scream about his hat trying to eat him is almost worth having to deal with them. Almost. (It's nowhere near enough to make dealing with Atuin worth the effort.) But at the very least, Atuin's chaotic approach to magic tends to take out any hidden mimics as part of the collateral damage. That really helps to keep him alive, since as he keeps destroying all their stuff, there aren't too many dragons willing to help him out in a pinch.

{There is text here, but it seems to actively prevent itself from being read.}

When not flying, he will always rest on the tallest object available. Even if it's another, rather indignant, dragon.

While he enjoys teasing most of the clan members, Auron is one of his favourites to pick on. And it's not just because he's a real treasure hunter and Auron is nothing but a fake. Auron's sputtering reactions and steadfast denial of his shortcomings make for some great entertainment.
