Leader of Clan Amarayne

B I O G R A P H Y

Lady Heulwen, daughter of Dame Elomuria who was the first leader of Clan Amarayne, came to power after her mother stepped down. She is also, unbeknownst to most in the clan, the guardian of the clan's Heart, a dragon who embodies the clan's bond and who's death or harm would spell disaster for every member, potentially of the fatal kind. The Heart also happens to be her daughter, Nimue. Though juggling both leadership and protecting her daughter seemed unfeasable at first, she has since learned how to balance the two and is serving as a more capable leader than even her mother.

As a young dragoness, Heulwen acted very foolishly and ended up captured by bandits who sought to ransom her back to her mother. She escaped, but with deep, dark scars that never faded, marring her lovely face and causing her right eye to be damaged, but not blinded. This event shook her to her core and completely changed her. She went from playful and carefree to serious and devoted to her clan and to earning her respect and the position of leader. This too changed when she fell for a handsome dragon of an ally clan, Zanviol of Niharike. Together they bore a clutch of three, and motherhood softened her and made her reevaluate herself. She realized that she was overcompensating for an event that happened a long time ago, and that instead of worrying about what the clan thought of her it was what she did with herself that was important. When she and Zanviol parted ways, she took the lone daughter they had produced with her and continued her duties as both a guard and a mother.

She later became leader and ruled through a time of peace, prosperity and growth. Long-standing issues were resolved under her rule and the clan grew in both size and renown. She could never have seen the invasion coming, however. One of her own guards was cowed into silence allowing the imperial Mirrikh and his small army to infiltrate the clan and cause mayhem as he sought to destroy two Heralds living in her clan and anyone else who caught his eye along the way. Through quick thinking she was able to secure her daughter in a safe place and rally the clan for a combined offense against the invaders, finally defeating them and sealing away Mirrikh until they could learn how to safely destroy him. Despite her efforts, the clan lost many lives that day, including most of their hatchlings. To ensure that this never happens again, she has installed multiple security measures so that Amarayne will immediately be alerted when an intruder sets foot in their lair.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Heulwen is very perceptive. She knows her dragons well, and picks up on the mannerisms of strangers quickly. A slight shift in behavior is almost always caught and she will watch closely to learn what it means, whether it be dishonesty, hesitance, or worry. She does sometimes ignore this talent of hers when she has a prejudice toward someone, suspecting them when her instincts tell her they are doing nothing wrong and forgiving them when she knows in her gut something is off. She is working on this flaw of hers, especially with the invasion so fresh in her mind, because she knows it would eventually lead to trouble if left unchecked.

Getting in between her and her clan is a bad idea. Getting between her and her charge is an even worse one. Her deepest loyalties lie with her clan and its Heart, a trait that is only bolstered by her role as Protector. She will give her all when any of her clan is on the line, but will not hesitate to mete out justice if any of her dragons put the clan's safety in jeopardy. She keeps the needs of the many in her mind first and foremost, but she tries not to ignore the needs of the few. Like her mother and father before her, she is not above shouldering the day-to-day burdens of the clan alongside the rest of them, and doesn't feel above menial labor just because of her fancy title.

Patience is one of her greatest strengths. She, very unlike her mother, will step back and evaluate a situation before addressing it head-on, a trait she most likely got from her father Teitr. She can at times be too hesitant to act, but usually has the sense to know the right moment to act. She knows that rushing into action can have dire consequences, especially when one is leader of an entire clan. This is why she has been so lax in choosing her Deputy; time will reveal who the best choice is, and until then she can afford to watch and wait.
