Jayme displayed strong magical affinity from nearly the moment he arrived in Clan Zekis from Deoradhan-Kunibert, and quickly gained an apprenticeship with Olenna. Thus far, he has survived the apprenticeship with only minor injuries. While he admires and respects Olenna, and has learned much from her, he doesn't fully agree with her methodology. Olenna likes to do everything with magic, and if she encounters an obstacle, she believes the answer is always 'more magic.' Jay, possibly as a result of sharing living space with Cole, thinks that it makes more sense to devise ways to use magic while expelling as little mana as possible. For this, he turned to technology as a vessel.

To learn about technology, Jayme asked Siriel to teach him. Thankfully, Siri's rivalry with Olenna did not lead her to extend any dislike to her apprentice. She, along with the clan's mechanic, Garrus, taught him as much as they could about how the technology the clan had worked. Jay decided that he would focus on machinery, adding an extra oomph with magic or fixing problems that Siri or Garrus weren't yet able to fix. He also learned how to use magic to streamline the construction process.
