Q was always called "Quyen" by her parents; they raised her with the expectation that she would embody her name's meaning.

But the name just didn't fit! At all. She didn't feel like a noble, dutiful dragon. She never felt powerful, and for that matter, she didn't want to feel powerful. She didn't want to influence others, didn't want to tell them what choices they ought to make. The notion that she should know what was best for another dragon made her feel sick inside.

She just wanted a chance to explore who she was.

But her parents insisted: she was Quyen, and that was that.

So she responded to the name, acting the part of the dutiful son. She kept to herself the absolute bone-deep conviction that Quyen was not her. Quyen was an ideal; he didn't exist.

She started suffering blackouts.

Though her parents praised her hard work, she couldn't remember the long hours she put in practicing etiquette and speech. She had no knowledge of the odd trinkets - fossils and relics - that began appearing in her lair.

Confused and heartsick, terrified of her parents' expectations, she ran away.

It lifted a weight off her shoulders: she could be herself. She would never have to be Quyen ever again. So she chose a new name for herself: "Qui", to remind herself that transformations were possible.

She traveled, lighthearted, by herself, for several days.

But as her elation at her escape began to wane, trouble informed her of its visit. She became aware that she was still experiencing blackouts. Though briefer than before, they were still disorienting and frightening.

She had no idea what to do.

When she saw Keahi for the first time, across a wide-open meadow, the feeling that rolled in her gut was antagonism: she wanted to leap on him, tackle him to the ground, dominate him.

It was nauseating, because she knew it wasn't her own reaction. It was the first time she had felt Quyen, that she realized he was real. And he was trying to take her over, body and mind.

Keahi
She struggled to contain Quyen, with mixed success, as Keahi approached her: while she managed to control her body, Quyen did succeed in spewing vitriol at the fire-colored Imperial.

To her surprise, he took it in stride.

Now settled in Deoradhan-Kunibert, Q is much more comfortable: Keahi is loving and understanding, supportive. He is working very hard to come to terms with Quyen (though having little success...), and accepts his mate's request that no pronouns be used when referring to Q. It makes perfect sense to him that an individual with more than one personality would dislike the use of pronouns.

And in this healthier environment, Q has discovered that Q is a proficient hunter. It brings Q joy to be out-of-doors, chasing down the clan's next meal.
