It's a sunny spring day in the Everbloom Gardens, and a group of hatchlings are taking advantage of the warmth to splash about by the banks of the Meandering River. There's a scream, and a splash—a common enough occurrence in hatchling games—but what's not usual is for it to be followed by absolute chaos. A pair of hatchlings collide so hard they fall down, another trips over a rock, and a fifth just sits down and begins to wail at the top of his lungs.
Parents and bystanders rush over to help, and mutters begin to spread. It could just be the wild imagination of children, an exaggeration brought on by the game they were playing...but you hear there's a monster lurking.
The details are nebulous beyond that. Some say they saw it in the sky; others claim it swam up from the depths of the river. Some speak of its terrifying clawed feet, and others remember seeing a wisdom in its eyes not unlike that of a dragon's. But the one thing they all agree on is that right after they caught sight of the creature, the world became dim, colors muted, and rapidly they lost their ability to see.
The good news is that all five hatchlings regained their sight after a few moments; the bad news is that no one has a clue what caused the problem. The river bank where they were playing has been closed off, and even the more daring hatchlings don't want to risk searching for a creature that can steal their sight. None of the scientists in the Labyrinth have been able to find an explanation for the day's events. But when a clan bordering the Meandering River calls upon the Spectral Zoologists and the Biologists of the Obscure in to investigate, Griffin and Odessa show up themselves, eager to hear a firsthand account of the monster spotting.

It's a sunny spring day in the Everbloom Gardens, and a group of hatchlings are taking advantage of the warmth to splash about by the banks of the Meandering River. There's a scream, and a splash—a common enough occurrence in hatchling games—but what's not usual is for it to be followed by absolute chaos. A pair of hatchlings collide so hard they fall down, another trips over a rock, and a fifth just sits down and begins to wail at the top of his lungs.
Parents and bystanders rush over to help, and mutters begin to spread. It could just be the wild imagination of children, an exaggeration brought on by the game they were playing...but you hear there's a monster lurking.
The details are nebulous beyond that. Some say they saw it in the sky; others claim it swam up from the depths of the river. Some speak of its terrifying clawed feet, and others remember seeing a wisdom in its eyes not unlike that of a dragon's. But the one thing they all agree on is that right after they caught sight of the creature, the world became dim, colors muted, and rapidly they lost their ability to see.
The good news is that all five hatchlings regained their sight after a few moments; the bad news is that no one has a clue what caused the problem. The river bank where they were playing has been closed off, and even the more daring hatchlings don't want to risk searching for a creature that can steal their sight. None of the scientists in the Labyrinth have been able to find an explanation for the day's events. But when a clan bordering the Meandering River calls upon the Spectral Zoologists and the Biologists of the Obscure in to investigate, Griffin and Odessa show up themselves, eager to hear a firsthand account of the monster spotting.
