The days become a blind sort of chase for the Biologists of the Obscure and the Spectral Zoologists, both teams having noted that the cries are fading as the creature making them heads upriver… and neither sure exactly how far it travels each night. They push as far as they can each day, setting guards by their camps each night to keep an ear out for whatever creature they track.
Sometimes it seems the creature knows what they're doing, lingering downstream long enough for them to get a bead on it and then, only a short while later, fading into the distance in the other direction. Without any hint as to its identity, the scientists can do nothing but continue up the river and hope to one day learn its secrets.
After days of struggling upstream by land, air, and boat, the scientists find the river splitting in two ahead of them, the water flowing around an island. On the right side, the water runs slow and deep, forming a pool. The left has the closest thing to rapids the Meandering River has to offer. The travelers opt for the right fork, easily piloting their boats past the island when many dragons at once exclaim about the behavior of the fish beneath them. The cichlids appear to be swimming in circles, some colliding with each other in their frantic dance. The boats are rowed to a standstill and Biologists and Zoologists alike begin to break out fishing nets and measuring tools to see what can be causing these fish to behave so.
The fish they observe are perfectly healthy, large for their age even, but all have one thing in common: their eyes are covered with a light film that seems to block their vision. It's thin, nearly transparent, and would be hard to see if one wasn't looking for it, but this team knows it for what it is: a clue. They split, each sending members of their party to the shore and to the island to search while others stay at the pool to observe the fish. No creature is found, but the fish continue to behave erratically and, though the team is there for much more than the few minutes it took for the hatchlings to regain their site, their blindness does not seem to fade.
Both Griffin and Odessa agree that their teams should camp where they are for the night, and continue to search the area for clues in the morning. As tents are set up and fires started, the mood is jubilant. The hunt is turning up results… and a discovery lingers just beyond the horizon.
