A few sidetrips later, the scientists join up again and forge forward, through the meadow. The path they take brings them closer to lands owned by clans, which is a welcome change for many in the party. The adventurers are offered food and encouragement, and find more than one pair of interested ears looking to absorb their story.
The clans in the Gladeveins haven’t been immune to strange happenings either…and some have stories to tell back. They, too, have been hearing the strange hiss that disturbed the party last night, and more than a few clans have had small livestock go missing, only to turn up dead with wounds similar to what you saw on the fawn. The hunter, whatever it is, strikes at night, and has been targeting clans and settlements all along this stretch of the prairie.
Interest piqued, the scientists do what they do best and investigate. They draw tales out of the locals and are taken to see some of the livestock that have become its prey. By comparing the locations and dates of the attacks, the scientists are able to map out a rough hunting pattern for the creature. Their route set, they’re ready to go—but one more dragon, old and wizened, approaches and says he’s seen the creature. The party stays.
By the dragon’s account, the creature was a dog or a large cat—or maybe more like a lizard. It could run quickly, but it had wings on its back…or they could have been spines. It could have been a very large bat. He thinks it had fur, or feathers. The next morning he found two of his hens dead with the very puncture marks the team has been describing.
The scientists nod and take notes, and then take their leave after the dragon has finished his tale. It has more flavor of an urban legend than anything else, and the question is raised whether he’s just repeating tales from his childhood or whether his sighting has any bearing on the current search. But, as the scientists set out to track down this creature, they keep his words in mind nonetheless. Even if the most outrageous tales there is often a hint of truth.
