Pinkerlocke: Trust me!

Original rules here.
Lore
"Tyranny follows monarchy, which itself follows anarchy, which follows democracy, which follows oligarchy, which follows aristocracy, which- yeah, follows tyranny, and so on. It's an ever-lasting circle, and every time, there's someone to overthrow the evil type of rule. Do you remember what I told you about the ancient dragon gods? They were overthrown, too."
"What were they?"
"Oligarchy, the rule of the few. After that, they installed a democracy in every flight, and that's where it began to go south."
"It became anarchy."
"Right-o. Then, the father of the current emperor came and united the dragons again, but as soon as he died... ever-lasting circle, like I told you. So, what's our quest?"
"We have to get the dragon gods back. But tell me, if it's ever-lasting, what did it begin with?"
"The gods created it."
"Why?"
"No one knows."

In a post-deity Flight Rising, a cruel emperor has seized power. Upon realizing, his commander-in-chiefs decide to run away and end his rule. They don't make it... but they become the sparks that light the fires of resistance.

Rules
  • If a dragon dies in the coliseum, it is dead and must be exalted.
  • One action per day. This depends on that day's loot from Pinkerton's Plundered Pile.
  • Food: Coliseum time! Exact number of matches has to be chosen by a random number generator.
    Plants: 10-20 matches
    Insects: 20-30 matches
    Seafood: 30-40 matches
    Meat: 40-50 matches
The participating dragons are chosen randomly; dragons at Level 25 may not be chosen. The venue is the one one level lower than the strongest dragon. Healing and quitting the battle streak is allowed, fleeing is not.
  • Lysithea's Rule: If a dragon that's at least five levels lower than the venue faints, rather than exalting it right away, the party enters a Life Streak. The battle streak continues without quitting until the whole party either faints or survives a battle. Single faints during a Life Streak are to be ignored; the battles count towards the total. However, if the required battles are done and the streak is ongoing, it has to be completed anyway.
If the party faints, the it's a fail and the dragon in question dies.
If the whole party survives a battle, it's a success and the dragon in question survives, but will receive a grave injury.
  • Materials and trinkets: Nothing specific, may be skipped - this is meant to be fun, after all.
  • Familiars: A new dragon joins the forces. Breed is decided by a random number.
    1. Fae
    2. Guardian
    3. Mirror
    4. Pearlcatcher
    5. Ridgeback
    6. Tundra
    7. Spiral
    8. Imperial
    9. Snapper
    10. Wildclaw
    11. Nocturne
    12. Coatl
    13. Skydancer
    14. Bogsneak
    15. Gaoler
    16. Any
  • Apparel: Two dragons can be bred, or a gene can be changed. If this isn't possible or wouldn't make sense, apparel is treated as wildcard.
Note: Once the eggs hatch, a coin must be flipped for each one. Heads, it lives. Tails, it's dead.
  • Battle items: Uh-oh! It an attack is possible, it has to be done now. If it is not possible, flip a coin. Tails means nothing happens. Heads means Death Streak. (Lysithea's Rule doesn't apply here.)
  • Attack: The Keeper, another dragon (lv. 25) and a Sustainer fight in the Golem Workshop and stay there until one dragon faints and dies. Only the Keeper may use healing items.
If the dead dragon is the Sustainer, the attack is won, and the other dragon retires while the Keeper stays as participant.
If it's the Keeper or the other dragon, it's lost.
  • Death streak: Three dragons have to be selected randomly and fight in the coliseum for 10 rounds without quitting the streak or fleeing. Healing is still allowed. The streak may be quitted when a dragon dies.

The Keeper: The dragon who owns the book of magic. The Keeper is the only dragon who may challenge the Sustainers. This position will be passed on to a dragon of the party when the Keeper dies.
Current Keeper is Lou.

The Sustainers: The empire's strongest dragons. There are three of them, plus the emperor himself. They may be attacked by the Keeper and another dragon on lv. 25 of the Keeper's choice. Then again... there's a trigger for every sustainer. They might join the Keeper's forces.

The challenge is considered lost when all dragons are dead. It may be started again with new dragons.
The challenge is considered won when all Sustainers are defeated.

Prologue

"They're here."
"I know. Did you think they would leave us be after what we've done?"
"..."
"Look, you and I both know we're considered as traitors now. We may have played for time with our lie that we'd just chase the thief, but they aren't stupid as well."
"Yeah, right..."
"Anyways." Claws scratched against the ground. "I'm done with the incantation."
"You really want to do this?!"
The hatchling opened his eyes as he heard his father's shocked voice.
"We have no choice", the hatchling's mother pointed out. "You know their tactician and herald as well as I do. We're already surrounded."
The male dragon lowered his head. "So we are." He sounded defeated.
"Prepare him to go." Even the female sounded reluctant now. "He's smart, he'll survive. We've already taught him all we know. I'll tell the others we have to fight." Howling wind replaced her warm figure.
"We didn't even tell him about his brother...", the father muttered to himself. He gently placed a claw on the hatchling's shoulder. "Lou? Lou, wake up, please."
Lou blinked a few times before looking at his father. "Dad? What is it?"
"You got to go." The older dragon handed him a book. "Don't loose it. This is our only chance."
"Only chance", Lou repeated and nodded.
His father smiled. "Yes. You're fast and tiny, they won't see you. Do you remember what we've taught you? What do they fear?"
"Haze", he answered. "Haze is at the coast."
"Yes, little one. And you go there. You'll be safe."
Suddenly, a blinding light flashed through the entrance of the cave, followed by a deafening clap of thunder.
The male dragon's expression darkened. He pointed at another, tinier hole next to their nest. "Run. Now. And Lou- don't look back."
Lou clutched the book and ran.

He went down a slope head over heels and finally landed flat in his face. He didn't move for a while, but breathed. The air was cool and chilling, and soon, a waterfilm condensed in his scales. The mist. He did it. His parents did not. Tears welled up in his eyes. But then he got up, wiped them away, and clutched the book. He didn't want to think of his parents who were probably dead by now. And he didn't want to die. He would find himself a cave to disappear in, and try to figure out how to not let his parents death be in vain. Just as he nodded to himself, a deep voice sounded behind him. "Excuse me?" Lou spun around and watched with awe as a purple snapper dragon approached him from behind. Around his neck, the dragon wore a scarf with muddy and ripped ends. "Who are you?", the snapper asked in a gruff tone. The wildclaw gulped. " L-lou", he stammered. "I'm- m-my parents... sent me h-here..." "To do what?" The snapper eyed him critically. Before Lou could answer, though, he spotted the book. "My, is that-" "It's not the empire's book of magic", Lou replied hastily. The other dragon chuckled. "It most certainly is", he stated. "What does a hatchling do here, in the mist, with this book? Don't tell me you've stolen it." Tears welled up in Lou's eyes again. "My parents", he wispered. "As the empire found us, they sent me here." "Now this is some strong stuff", the snapper mused. "And you? Wat'cha gonna do now?" "Fight", the hatchling answered without hesitating. The other dragon nodded. "Lou, was it? Look, you can trust me. Tell you what. Almost every dragon here's seen the empire's cruelity, and every one of them wants to overthrow it. With this book of yours, it's possible. It just seems to me that it's sealed." "Um..." Lou eyes the book. "Yes... my mother said something like that..." "Well, we'll figure something out. The name's Specs, by the way", the snapper introduced himself. "Come. You seem to need a nap, and my den is just around the corner. Besides, it's dangerous out here for a hatchling like you. Quite some beasts around here." Specs hesitated, then snarled. "Yeah. Like that one." He jumped towards a tuft of grass, barely visible in the mist, and scratched something. A cry of pain answered him. "Ouch!" Something toppled out of the grass, and it was clearly not a beast. Instead, it looked like a dragon, more exactly, a greenish guardian hatchling, who clutched her cheek with her claws. "Oh", Specs said. "Why, sorry, little one. You hurt?" Lou jumped towards the other hatchling. "Wait, let me see...", he murmured while gently pulling away her claws. "Oh no... Specs, this looks bad!" The snapper nodded. "Sure does. But I'm not sure yet wether this are good or bad news. Hatchlings don't come here normally." He eyed her sharply. "Why are you here?" "I'm... my clan's... they b-burned..." The guardian bursted into tears. "Heard enough." Specs nodded again. "C'mon, climb on my back, dearie. I'll carry you. What's your name?" The hatchling sniffed and crawled on his back. "I'm Fennec." "Lou", the wildclaw repeated. "Nice one." Specs smiled. "So - my den is just around the corner. Don't loose your book, Lou." "Sure not!"

Day 2 [item=Chipskink Tail] "Now", Specs started, "Found out something?" Lou shook his head. "It's sealed, just as you said. I can't even open it." He hesitated. "How's Fennec?" "Sleeps." The snapper sat down. "She'll... guess the eye's fine, she'll just carry a scar." Silence. "I don't understand you", Lou finally said. "Telling me to trust you, but then injuring another hatchling so bad she can't even walk straight." Specs lowered his head. "Yeah, well... I could tell you now that I didn't recognize her as a dragon against the grass and that I only saw her wings, which looked like red eyes, but then again... this wouldn't really change your mind, right? Look, it was an accident, and I'm sorry about it. But I guess you'd only forgive me if I would heal her, which I can't." Lou looked startled. "How could you tell?!" "Oh, you're pretty easy to read, Lou. Complete contrary to this book of yours." The big purple dragon shrugged. "You can trust me, but you don't have to. After all, I won't be mad at you for not telling me what you've found out. At least for now. I can't start a revolution with you if you don't trust me, though." The wildclaw fixed his gaze on the book. "Fine, then", he murmured after a while. "Tell me about you. You know about my parents and Fennec's clan. I know nothing about you. I can't trust you if I don't." Specs' eyes were wie in shock. "About me?!" "For example about that scarf of yours." Specs blinked. Then he blinked again. And again. "You're-", he croaked out. "You're serious about that." "As serious as the empire's tactician, yes." Lou was merciless. The snapper gulped. The empire's tactician was known for his seriousness. Rumor was that he never even smiled, let alone laughed or, Stormcatcher forbid, joked. "Allright, fine", he gave in. "My scarf, right. Well, it's a gift from my sister. That's it. My sis." Lou's expression became soft. "A sister, huh? Tell me about her!" "It's... nothing I'd like to talk about, okay?!", Specs snapped. But as the wildclaw just kept smiling at him without a response, he turned away and pressed his chin to the ground. "I had two sisters. Both snappers. We were happy, you know? But then, the empire crossed out pack's path. And they captured all the young dragons. My younger sister as well. My older sister and I followed then. They told us to choose between killing a member of out pack, and they'd set her free, or watch her die. And my older sister chose the first option. She gave me her scarf, ran towards a cilff, and jumped." He shivered. "I'm not sure wether she survived. I didn't look down. Well, technically, she'd killed a member of our pack, but the empire's herald didn't think so. She told me to choose, but I refused and attacked her. I didn't stand a chance. Some hours later, I woke, though, next to the body of my younger sister." Lou was silent for a long while after that. He didn't know what to say. He wanted to comfort the older dragon, but he didn't know how. "I'm sorry", another voice suddenly said. "I'm so sorry, Specs." "Huh? Fennec?" The snapper flinched. "You heard that?" The guardian hatchling approached the other dragons. "So I did. I'm sorry for eavesdropping." "But you were fast asleep...", Specs wondered. Fennec shook her head. "I weren't. I'm a decent actor." Lou grinned. "Fine. Guess I can trust you both. Look." He presented the other dragons a sheet of paper. "This fell out of the book as I shook it earlier. It's a letter from my mother. She writes that only a really strong and experienced dragon is able to open it." "Strong and experienced...", Fennec repeated thoughtfully. Specs nodded. "Sonds smart. We'll have to be strong for a revolution as well." Lou hummed in agreement. "Training it is, then?" Fennec grinned. "Birdbrain. This is too hard for a hatchling." "Oh." He hung his head. "Right." "How about flying instead?", Specs tried to lighten the mood. "Really?!" Both hatchlings looked at him, their eyes sparkling. "Yeah." He shrugged. "That I'm not capable of flight doesn't mean I don't know how it works theoretically- hey, wait! Hold your dragons! Guys!"
Day 2
Chipskink Tail

"Now", Specs started, "Found out something?"
Lou shook his head. "It's sealed, just as you said. I can't even open it." He hesitated. "How's Fennec?"
"Sleeps." The snapper sat down. "She'll... guess the eye's fine, she'll just carry a scar."
Silence.
"I don't understand you", Lou finally said. "Telling me to trust you, but then injuring another hatchling so bad she can't even walk straight."

Some hours later, I woke, though, next to the body of my younger sister."
Lou was silent for a long while after that. He didn't know what to say. He wanted to comfort the older dragon, but he didn't know how.
"I'm sorry", another voice suddenly said. "I'm so sorry, Specs."
"Huh? Fennec?" The snapper flinched. "You heard that?"
The guardian hatchling approached the other dragons. "So I did. I'm sorry for eavesdropping."
"But you were fast asleep...", Specs wondered.
Fennec shook her head. "I weren't. I'm a decent actor."
Lou grinned. "Fine. Guess I can trust you both. Look." He presented the other dragons a sheet of paper. "This fell out of the book as I shook it earlier. It's a letter from my mother. She writes that only a really strong and experienced dragon is able to open it."
"Strong and experienced...", Fennec repeated thoughtfully.
Specs nodded. "Sonds smart. We'll have to be strong for a revolution as well."
Lou hummed in agreement. "Training it is, then?"
Fennec grinned. "Birdbrain. This is too hard for a hatchling."
"Oh." He hung his head. "Right."
"How about flying instead?", Specs tried to lighten the mood.
"Really?!" Both hatchlings looked at him, their eyes sparkling.
"Yeah." He shrugged. "That I'm not capable of flight doesn't mean I don't know how it works theoretically- hey, wait! Hold your dragons! Guys!"

The snapper took his time. They'd left the cave for gathering some food today. Food didn't bite nor run away, so this couldn't be that urgent. ...could it? "Okay...", he mumbled when he finally saw the other dragon. He was stained with mud, as if he'd been digging or something. And it seemed like he'd found a... statue? She'd grown a lot the last days, and now she was already twice as large as Lou, who could be considered an adult now. Lou smiled up at her. "This is a manticore", he explained. "My parents told me about them. They said they're carnivorous, and scare most predators away." "As if dragons wouldn't", Specs muttered under his breath. The manticore flashed him a toothy grin. Lou snickered. "Well Specs, you don't eat meat." The snapper chuckled. "Right y'are", he said. "Do you wanna take him home?" "Maybe." The wildclaw shrugged. "He seems friendly", Fennec added. "Plus, he would make a great companion for you when you're up at night Specs, don't you think?" "And he could watch over the cave while we're gone. I had a bad feeling about this anyway", Lou mused. "Tch." The snapper turned away. The guardian grinned. "Don't worry", she told the manticore. "He's a little grumpy, but he likes you." The manticore purred. Specs sighed.

Day 4 [item=Brightly Painted Bird Toy] Lou shivered. Those eyes... he knew them... those eyes he'd seen in his dream... Fennec looked over her shoulder. "Do you- do you think he's fine?" "He's just brooding", Specs answered, shrugging. "Nothing serious, really. He'll be fine, and besides, the manticore's watching over him. You were the one who trusted that beast, after all." "Yes..." She sighed, hanging her head. The snapper snorted. Okay, fine, Lou had a bad day. Nothing to worry about, right? And still Fennec was moping. He just didn't understand the females. "You could get him a nice bird or something", he suggested. The guardian smiled a little. "Okay." They gathered their food in silence. As silent as it was in the mist, of course. There was almost always some beast or dragon howling, shrieking or growling. At the very least, there was the sound of waves. "That you're worried", Specs finally spoke up, "Is it because you got sorrows yourself?" Fennec paused plucking leaves from a tree. "Maybe", she answered after a while. "Wanna talk about it?" "Don't be mad", she pleaded. "But I do not. And please don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to tell Lou either, nor anyone else." "Fine." The snapper shrugged. Fennec felt guilty. "It's nothing. I'm more worried about Lou, really. Let's head home, okay?" "He's fine." Specs sighed, trotting behind the guardian.

Day 5 [item=Simple Pearly Wing Bangles] (No dragons who could be bred, though. Nor an idea which two that would even be.) Fennec woke with a jolt. Panting, she looked around the cave, only to find it empty. That caused her even more panic. Where'd the others go? Specs never left the cave at night, and Lou was supposed to be sleeping right next to her - oh wait. She didn't roll onto him in her sleep, did she? Quickly, the guardian jumped to her feet, but there was no blue-and-red wildclaw to be seen. She sighed in relief. If she'd crushed her comrade, she'd never forgive herself. She would never forgive him if he abandoned her, either, though. And he clearly was gone. As well as the snapper was. And the manticore... no, there it was, hiding at the entrance of the cave. Rain poured down on the outside like it had the whole day. Fennec sighed again, feeling calmer now. Even if Specs pobably had, Lou wouldn't have left the manticore here if he'd abandoned the group. "Why you", the green dragon mused. "Where are they, huh?" The manticore stopped grooming his fur for a second, eyed her curiously, and then got back to his fur. She laughed. "Well. Let's call them, shall we? If they're near, they should hear us. Lou? Specs?" The beast chose to ignore the yelling dragon. "Hey!" Two red spots made their way through the rain. As they approached further, Fenec could make out the greyish-blue body of the wildclaw as wll. "Oh, there you are!" "Hi Fen", Lou replied, stepping into the cave and shaking himself. "So you're awake. Sorry, did we scare you?" The guardian shook her head. "No, you didn't. But why were you out there?" "Specs was all jittery", he explained. "I'd never thought that not being able to go outside would get onto his nerves that bad. He set off to a midnight stroll and since it's geting pretty crowded in here with you continuing to grow and stuff, he thought he might look for a new cave. A greater one, that means. I just went outside because I had to think... you snore, did you know?" He shot a look across the cave to where he'd left the book, but it was unharmed. Water probably couldn't even do damage to it, but he didn't want to risk it. "Oh." Fennec chuckled. "No, I didn't know that. I'm sorry for unnerving you." Lou shrugged, smiling. "Nah, not that bad, actually. I just needed to be alone." The guardian wrapped her wing around the smaller dragon. "Come." She smiled. "Sit down with me. I'll be quiet now." The wildclaw nodded. They sat in silence for a while. "Fen?", he finally asked. "Yes?" "Do you have siblings?" "Siblings? A strange thing to ask." Fennec cocked her head. "But yes, I do. I have four sisters. Since we all ran from the fire, they're probably scattered all over the continent now." She looked down. "I'm not going to see them ever again, I guess." Lou blinked. "And you are... the oldest? You behave like you were." She shook her head. "Complete opposite." He watched the rain pour down. "Well..." "Do you have siblings, Lou?" "...I'm not sure."
