Do one or do them all. Every little detail helps. If you’re an advanced player that already has basic lore down, this is an opportunity to polish up that thing you wrote a few years ago. This week is your week to really think about the details of the topic and bring your clan to life! There will be a different topic every Friday so you can work on it at your leisure but gives a little nudge towards working on lore. Setting aside time for lore writing is very important, so think of this as your FR homework and try to do it at a certain time on the same day of the week. Getting a schedule down makes it so you actually work on lore. Not… how I did it and wait two years before writing the next bit to a story... The goal of this series will be to release a different topic each week and be finished with the basics of clan lore within 6 months so anyone can participate no matter how far along you are currently. Above all, this is a place to share the lore you have created focusing on the week's topic and discuss it with others. If you get stuck on a particular aspect, bouncing ideas off of someone else can help. Let’s build our Sornieth together.

Chapter 3: The World Outside

1. What kind of resources does your territory have?
My clan has large sources of timber as well as granite, scrap metal, and quartz-based gems. The clan grows a lot of miscellaneous plants in its garden terraces in the residential tier of the Quarry. Most of this is decoration though, but most of it can be eaten, mostly by the clan. A large amount of Quinoa is grown in a large valley nearby, so that feeds the clan too. This is not including the food collected in the forests and caves surrounding the Quarry.

Is there something in abundance?
As the clan is in a Granite Quarry, there is a very large surplus of Granite. Much of what is sold by the clan had already been cut into blocks millennia ago, so once the stores of blocks that are readily available are used up, the clan will likely just cut more. Due to the clan being in a Quarry, it also has a very large amount of old machinery forged of steel to be melted down to be reused. Some of the tools are still useful, and a few can be reverse engineered to be remade by the clan itself.
What about a deficiency?
The clan doesn’t usually collect enough bugs or meat for consumption, so large amounts are brought it from the surrounding area by those not in the clan or by the Centauri. Fish can be found in nearby streams, lakes, rivers, and even from the sea far to the south, but the clan has no direct access to them. That is basic goods at least. Metals besides steel are less common and are hard to aquire in the clan. Bronze is a common decorative metal and is highly sought after in the clan, so that is a common import.

How does this affect the lives of your dragons?
The lack of bugs and meat in the clan itself, except that which is brought in by hunters and bug catchers, has led to an unusual disparity in the population. Most clans in the Starfall Isles are primarily fae, but the faes eat a lot of bugs. This has led to a larger population of dragons that eats alternative sources of food besides bugs. The population has been growing as the imports have been more sustainable as well. Exotic ingredients are also sought after by the clan’s alchemists, so those are commonly well received. The metal Bronze is also popular, so much of the clan’s metalwork is made of it.

2. Do you dragons trade with other clans?
Yes. The Quarry does a lot of trade with nearby clans of both dragons and Beastclans.

What kinds of things does your clan produce that others might want?
The Centauri often buy metal tools and machinery from my clan forged from steel. They use these tools to harvest Quinoa or hunt. They can make them themselves but it is easier to get them from dragons. They also try and get magical items when they can as very few of them can use magic like dragons can. The Granite is also a popular item because it can be used as decoration, ornamentation, jewelry, and for weapons, as well as for cutting tools. The gems are popular among dragons and Centauri alike as well.

Is there a dragon in your clan that wants certain things from somewhere else?
The clan’s brewmaster, a type of Alchemist specializing in potions, Nairobi. She is obsessed with expanding her knowledge and working with new, exotic ingredients, so she has to spend a large sum of gold to collect these from the traveling caravaneers.

Do these dragons get their wishes fulfilled or are they put aside for the needs of the clan?
Because Nairobi has sufficient business, being the only commercial brewmaster in the clan, she has the treasure to afford the ingredients. Lately though, the costs have gone up and the caravans have been having less luck out there.

3. How does your clan treat guests? Is there a reason other dragons would or would not want to visit your clan?
Even with recent troubles with spirits and magical instability, the clan is still the central of industry and trade in the region. The clan is mostly receptive to guests and most will receive a warm-neutral reception. The population of the clan and the number of travellers kind of diminishes the responsiveness to new visitors. That isn’t to say the individual members of the clan are not more welcoming. What might drive some away is the occasional wandering spirit, the drifters, or maybe the random zealot spouting scripture.

4. How’s the weather?
Temperate and wet. The clan is close enough to the sea that the weather is relatively stable year round. The arcane magic also warms the ground a bit. The temperature usually fits between five and twenty-seven degrees (Celsius at least). Fog is quite common in the morning and the temperature is usually comfortable. Humidity is usually fairly high as well. The temperature in the Quarry is usually a little cooler than ground level though. The temperatures are the most stable at the bottom.

What do seasons look like to you in your flight?
The area doesn’t really have a wet or dry season, as it rains at nearly any time of the year. Light rain is pretty common. During the summer, it is closer to the high temperature range and rains perhaps once a week or so. During autumn, the leaves start to fall and all that fun stuff, but the temperature starts to get around the mid range. It continues to rain, but perhaps with a little less frequency. It rains the least during winter, and sometimes there is snow. In spring, it gets incredibly wet as the temperature reaches back into the midranges. There are outliers, of course. There was a heat wave a few years ago that reached into the mid forties. That was a nasty summer.

1. What kind of resources does your territory have? Is there something in abundance?
Being in Fire means Obsidian and ores are quite common. My clan also has a capable orchard so we have access to fruit. Volcanic glass is also common.

What about a deficiency? How does this affect the lives of your dragons?
Water is a precious resource but so long as we're near the sea or have access to an underground reservoir we're fine. Our wood isn't much so we have trades for it and take trips to get embers and wood from the Scorched Forest if we need it. while we have adequate food it's more staple things then exotic so we regularly send out hunting parties and trade for diversities sake since we run tourist hub.

2. Do you dragons trade with other clans? What kinds of things does your clan produce that others might want? Is there a dragon in your clan that wants certain things from somewhere else? Do these dragons get their wishes fulfilled or are they put aside for the needs of the clan?
Depends on scarcity, we have accomplished merchants and if they recipient is willing to pay and put in the effort then they're happy to look into it. Trade is a common thing since we have a bathhouse with a bazaar grown around it

3. How does your clan treat guests? Is there a reason other dragons would or would not want to visit your clan?
See above about tourism. Being guests is often the same as being customers so our clan is friendly so long as you're not aiming to stir up trouble.

4. How’s the weather? What do seasons look like to you in your flight? “Wet” and “Dry” are seasons too.
Well I imagine a lot of it would depend on where the winds are coming from and how close to a border we are. Given the Twisting Crescendo is nearby and it's reversal might have grave effects on weather. We're bordered by the Windy steppes, the dry desert, the freshwater sea and the ocean across from the Icefields. I haven't decided on where my clan is exactly but I'll think about it.

1. What kind of resources does your territory have? We got PINECONES a surprising amount of velvet from Velvetfur Deer, with cashmere being abundant with trade. Eye Flowers are a plant unique to Shadow and Arcane territory, and with enough patience and care we've managed to have our own imported Pink Silk Trees. Food wise, Duskrats, Leechroot Mushrooms, and Dark Creepers are in large supply, with Subterranean Clovers, Dusk Jadevines, and Umbra Parthenium being uncommon.
Abundance? From above: Duskrats, Leechroot Mushrooms, Dark Creepers, Subterranean Clovers, Dusk Jadevines, Umbra Parthenium. We also have Blue Racers, Cuckoos, Blacktongue Peppers, Royal Lantana, Siltvine, and Black Diamond Stingrays.
Deficiency? Depending on the season, plants become deficient or at the least bad-tasting, making them a limited food source. Spring has mostly sweet plants and a few spicy, creating unique flavors. Sour plants are rare during this time. Summer brings the most spicy plants, with bitter, dry, and sour being decorative. Autumn has sour and spicy, with increasing amounts of bitter and dry. Winter only has bitter and dry, making it the worse season for plant eaters.
How does this affect the lives of your dragons? If you eat plants you gonna SUFFER during Winter.

2. Do you dragons trade with other clans? Naturally. Arcane is one of our most common flight trades, with Water, Wind, and Nature being a close second. Due to the recent flight lore, however, Nature and Plague trades have been discourage, replaced with Fire and Lighting.
What kinds of things does your clan produce that others might want? In the near future, we plan on growing a lot of native Shadow plants for food and for sale. Aizurmela already cooks complete meals and snacks for travelers, objects decorated by Grimm are growing in popularity, and Vitalus sells infused cards. Word has it they give you good luck. Some have actually tried selling parts of Almaglo. Every attempt is a failure.
Is there a dragon in your clan that wants certain things from somewhere else?
Much of the clan use stim objects, with many kinds being commonly created within certain flights. This causes the need for many flight trades in order to fit other dragon's needs. Other flightly food is always welcome for Aizurmela, and Harpy loves hoarding shinies from any clan.
3. How does your clan treat guests?
While we seldom allow guests, they are treated with respect and kindness, so long as they do the same. When guests visit, it is most often to conduct trades and offers, usually for materials, but occasionally for Aizurmela's food.
Is there a reason other dragons would or would not want to visit your clan?
The main reason the clan isn't visited is because of it's location, combined with magical defenses. However, with the growing number of dragons proficient in a variety of handicrafts, trade visits have become increasingly frequent.
4. Weather
What do seasons look like to you in your flight?
With the close proximity to Water territory, we actually share seasons with them! These seasons are a combination of related ones from here and there for convenience. (Referencing the seasons of Don't Starve) Since Sornieth Years match Earth's, every season is somewhere around 90 days long, give/take a few.
Spring/Monsoon: As the weather warms up again, snow melts, Eye Flowers return from dormancy, old vegetation starts to regain color and flavor, and new vegetation grows. Rain falls frequently, and animals start to return, providing a bigger selection of meats. Mushrooms flourish during this time, making them common in spring meals.
With frequent rain comes flooding and mosquitoes, laced with Plague diseases. Plants become overwatered, reducing the availability of plant food. Trading business opens up again, but frequent rain causes business to be slow. Maren return from their dormancy, and trade with them blooms, as rain allows Maren who can't breathe air to be able to spend just a little more time outside the water.
Summer/Dry: Like a traditional summer, the general weather is quite warm. With the near-constant shade of the Tangled Wood, the temperature is a few degrees cooler than other lands. The local fish have migrated to their respective homes, so the seafood supply is likewise affected. New hunting opportunities arrive with the addition of warm-seasoned game, and certain plants change both color and taste. On the downside, food spoils faster, requiring the clan to either use up food quickly or to use ice magic and other kinds of refrigeration to prevent it. Meat and Seafood are hung up on drying racks, which both slow spoiling and allow many kinds of Jerky to be made.
Across the Sea of a Thousand Currents, the volcanoes of the Ashfall Waste erupt erratically. This provides an slight auditory hazard to the clan, along with a physical hazard for couriers like Harpy.
Autumn/Mild: Autumn is a time for relaxation and harvesting. Trees lose their leaves, vegetation start to change color and taste, and the greatest variety of animals is available. Eye Flower seeds appear during this time around trees, those already growing often tangling themselves up in Shimmering Pinecones. Rain is more infrequent, allowing plants to grow without becoming overwatered and increasing the supply of food.
The waters are calm, allowing safe Maren communication, fishing, and the occasional swimming. Trading is at its peak during this time, and Harpy provides a sizable part of the clan's income.
Winter/Hurricane: As the temperature drops, warm-seasoned animals either migrate or go into hibernation, while cold-seasoned animals make their appearance. Snow takes on a light-purple tint and falls frequently, while flora wither and change color. Their taste turns dry and bitter, making plants a disliked meal during this time. Eye Flowers require Fire Magic to function during this season, otherwise they go dormant. Storms become frequent along the coast, and winter fish make their appearance, sometimes appearing on the shore after a high wave. The combination of snow and storm can cause ice to freeze over in many places, providing a walking hazard.
Blizzards from the Southern Icefield become increasingly deadly, growing in range and strength. Trading stops for the season, blankets are switched out for heavier ones, and few leave the clan to conserve warmth.
