In order to inherit her own queendom, Elara, the Tundra princess of the steppes, was forced to marry Faldan, an extremely ugly prince from a neighboring kingdom.... but they have lots of kids anyway.

Since it was a marriage of convenience, there is no love between them. Consequently, they frequently cheat with their courtiers. Since Moonbreeze is a matriarchy, all of Elara's children are still in the line of succession even if they is not Faldan's offspring, and some of them are allowed to stay as potential heirs. Faldan's children from these illicit matches are sent to a monastery to train and to serve the Windsinger.

The Moonbreeze has become a research center for the treatment and cure of Crystalization Syndrome and Necrotic Skin Disorder.

Crystal, Facet, and Gembond can often be symptoms of Crystalization Syndrome, or CS. No one knows what causes it, where it came from, or how it's transmitted, although it's not believed to be contagious. The disease causes the victim's tissues to turn to crystal, gradually stiffening them and making movement difficult, and eventually impossible. Fortunately, the process is not painful. If you see a crystal statue of a dragon, chances are it's a CS victim who's body has been taken over entirely by crystal. That dragon is dead, but since there's no organic tissue left to rot, they just stand there until someone moves them or they erode into dust.

Necrotic Skin Disorder or NSD, also known as "The Creeping Crud", resembles Crackle or Smirch. NSD is an autoimmune disorder, akin to Lupus in humans. It causes the skin to slough off in sheets. Fortunately, the disorder seems to be mainly cosmetic and is not painful.
