Chapter 3. Clan Roles: Jobs 4/13
1. Make a list of jobs you need off the top of your head based on what lair structures you came up with in chapter 1 and what jobs you might want your dragons to have.
Leader, Gardening, Cook, Healer, Guard/Patrol, Nest/Hatchery Watcher, Mentor, Seller, Trader, Messenger, Shopkeeper, Hunter/Scavenger, Council maybe?
2. Try looking around the site itself for ideas. As an example, you need someone to gather food. But check out the gathering tab. You don’t just need a hunter. You need someone to gather bugs, catch fish, hunt for meat and forage for plants, berries and mushrooms. (Now is a good time to jot down favorite foods on those index cards.) This could be five or six different jobs.
I'll talk about food jobs for now!
1. Glen Vale and Yugona are the big game meat hunters.
2. Verel is the fisher and the one who butchers the carcasses brought home.
3. Lili scavenges and sometimes hunts smaller game.
4. Leima gathers the herbs, spices, plants, and bugs needed.
5. Rush cooks all of the ingredients above in soups, salads, and meals for the clan.
Another example is lair expansion. It’s a part of the site mechanics, so this can be a part of your lore. Is there someone in charge of this? Do they have help?
Lair expansions isn't a lore thing for me because each page is one lore lair, (page one is nature, page two is water, ect.) BUT as I recieved, bred, and bought more dragons, I initroduced Rush as a dragon home maker loking to build a flower shop and cabin for the dragons to live in instead of being out in the flower field open and in the caverns like they originally were when they were a small group of five, (six including Rush).
3. Use outside resources. If you’re absolutely stuck and need more, try this basic lore generator as a springboard. There’s also a list of medieval professions here and a small listing of FR centered occupations here to get you started. Here’s an ever growing FR specific listing.
.... I guess I should talk about the dragons I've recently got over the course of April instead of using all of page one babbling about Glen Vale, Yugona, Verel, Lili, Leima, and Rush, which I had at the start of the month.
Haven was one of the last hatchlings I hatched before I moved from water flight back to my home of nature flight. I liked her matching eyes and tert and I was looking for a honeydew secondary to put trail on and she just so happened to have it. She represents the connection between my custom progen Oasis and his water lair and Glen Vale, who adopted Oasis' abandoned Nature Flight territory. I'm glad I kept her. No offical job yet!
Amiria was an impulse buy to match the Blooming Grove Vista. She will eventually become Leima's bff and then maybe awkward lover? No offical job yet!
Meister was gifted to me by @/ScienceBased 2018-03-28 22:01:46. He wasn't Pear, but Fern was close enough. I kept him for a while until I decided I wanted himt o be a Spy/Informate that is suspicious and after Yugona, who we is the Plague rep in hidding.
Meister's Son,
Wildes, is actually the son of my random progen The Wild One, after she had a quick fling with Meister. She was thought to be dead, and in hiding from a dragon looking to kill her. The Wild One has sense left Nature flight and is hiding near Oasis, he original lover, in Water Flight. Both Meister and Wildes has no clue of this, but Glen Vale can see The Wild One's features in Wildes and has a feeling. Wildes will eventually be a lover to Lili and show her that he can provide her with love that she desires and deserves, even if he is a nature dragon and his father is out to get her mothers. Drama!
Advanced Lorebuilding :: Done all that basic stuff at the top? Well, here's some more stuff to work on. Already gave your dragons a job? One that perfectly suits their personality and temperament? Good. Here starts the number 1 rule of storytelling/RP: Suffering builds character. Life isn’t fair and we always don’t get what we want.
In the original group of 5 dragons, pick one at random.
Make sure they never get that perfect job. Maybe the dragon that loves to fly all day and is best suited to be a messenger is suddenly assigned to be a plant gatherer. Maybe they lose a wing in a tragic accident and they’re now doomed to be a librarian for the rest of their days. Maybe they just want to hang out with familiars all day but they’re tied to the forge with little or no social interactions with other dragons, let alone pets and other sentient creatures. How does this new job affect them? A dragon with hopes and dreams is much more interesting than a dragon that “got it” right out of the gate.
Lili wants nothing more than to make her mother proud and love her so much more. However, Lili being born into a nature clan from a nature father in the nature flight has the odds of her Plague Rep mother's love against her. Lili wants her mother to teach her all about Plague, how to survive, how illnesses spread, how to identify symptoms of poisons and venoms... but she is stuck with her nature loving sister in their nature loving mentors flower growing class.
