The first Scholar Mew had spotted slipped around the corner and seemingly disappeared into some impossible physics of the interior's dimensions. This left the Coatl to halt for a few moments and blink in amusement. “
The next one then!”
Merrilyn packed up her things and lingered, looking down all the directions she thought someone might approach the front desk in case a librarian had gone out for a lunch break. She didn’t see anything that suggested the desk would be attended any time soon and fluttered after her two companions.
Sure enough, a helpful Scholar was found. Once they had found what they sought, the two dragons thanked him for the assistance and set to their research.
“
Right. Looks like it’s time for us to go help.” Mew clapped the book he had been looking at (the written word was something his family and neighbours had shared) shut and returned it to the shelf.
“
Huh? I thought we were going to tell someone, the wardens maybe, what we’d learnt next?”
“
We can do that too if we’re asked to, but, we’re pretty much some of the most well-informed dragons on what’s going on.”
“
Well, I guess that some other travellers might run into trouble otherwise, and..” Merrilyn silently gulped, “
…if the wardens are still dealing with it when it’s time to head home, everyone has to worry about it.”
Mew nodded and put on a brave smile. “
Exactly. Melreyna would want us to do what we could to help.”
“
So…” Lode snorted during the prolonged moment of awkwardness, “
…are we going to look for it?”
“
Umm…” Mew’s drive to act dropped.
“
Maybe…you can try befriend it, Mew?” The Nocturne tentatively suggested. “
Lots of folks like you, and you seem to get along with them pretty easily…language barrier or not.”
The Coatl scrunched up his face and closed his eyes. Merrilyn did make a fair point that any attempt like that would require communication without a shared language. “
I was thinking we could help it with its comet first?”
“
I wouldn’t try fixing a dragonmade ship without someone who knew about them telling me what to do. Are you sure you want to try fix something even stranger?”
“
It’s pretty easy to see, so the wardens are probably already there and can help. I’m less sure about how easy it will be to find the pilot.”
“
Someone has to find them and lead them back to their ship sometime.” Merrilyn stepped near Mew and smiled reassuringly.
Mew let out a breath. “
I guess it’s that it did a really good job of making it clear it wanted to be left alone before. It’s…scary.” He met Merrilyn’s eyes, “
but you’re right. If we want to make sure no one gets hurt, we need to try calm the visitor and get them to return to their ship.”
“
Maybe they’ll be less scary now we know they’re frightened too.”
“
Let’s believe that. But so you’re less surprised when we have a proper meeting, they are really big. Bigger-than-an-Imperial big.” The Nocturne felt her body temperature drop and the Coatl gave her a hug. “
We’ll both be there and we can bring them presents. Presents help make a good first impression.”
Mew picked up the one book that had yet to be put away, “
maybe we can borrow this book to show them. Lode gave a rumble, and the Coatl turned to replace the book on the shelf. “
Okay then.”
Lode rose to their feet and padded to the duo. “
What might be a good present then?” Merrilyn asked.
“
We can see if anyone has spare spaceship parts.”
“
Maybe we can pick up some treats at the festival before leaving.”
“
Good idea!”
After an encounter with one visibly paranoid individual, they found someone willing to listen to their request.
“Someone crashed their spaceship and we’re looking for presents to help them relax.” Merrilyn relayed in common draconian.
“I can imagine a crash would be a stressful experience!” the Observatory denizen shook her head in amusement at the request. “I don’t know if I have anything that will help, but I can bring you some carryable bits and pieces.”
On reaching the vendors the two realised that the visitor’s sense of taste was just as unknown as their language, so they decided to pack a myriad of flavours and textures. Practically a sprinkling of each sort.
When the two had decided they had prepared as much as they could without sacrificing excess time, they set off back towards the Starwood where it began. As the glow of the meteor came into view, a reliable reference point for beginning their search, Mew realised something.
“
I wonder what music of the stars the visitor knows?”
