Day 24! One day left ahhhh! Three music inspos for tonight, surprise! You can read
the first Author's Notes for some background on how my clan works! Without further ado, let's get on it!
"Tell me what you want me to do, Uncle. I can lead the troops, if you'd like." The Nocturne stood before her clan leader. Polaris smiled at her hesitantly.
Harana had grown since he first saw her in her parents' arms. Her brown eyes seemed to glow with confidence. The way she carried herself reminded him of her mother. He felt hesitant to send her out to battle, despite the battle experience she had. If she were to fall in battle, like her parents did on the Day of Chaos, he would never be able to forgive himself.
"We might not make it out alive. But you will."
"Wh-what are you saying?! I don't understand!"
Derrick placed his hand on Polaris' arm.
"They betrayed us, Lar. They sent us here intentionally for trying to send our children to another dimension and going against their orders."
Polaris' eyes widened. He felt a chill run down his spine.
Of course. It all made sense now.
"No! No, they can't do this, it's not fair!"
Yumi took his hand and squeezed it.
"It's not. But there is no way we can get out alive. And they knew that. But you aren't connected to the Mother Ship, like we are. So you have a chance of escaping."
He couldn't believe he was hearing this.
"No! I'd rather die with you than leave all of you to die!" Polaris yelled angrily, pulling away from them.
"They can't do this! I won't let them! This is selfish! This is unfair! First, the orders, then the children, and now this! I won't let this - "
"Polaris."
He gazed into the eyes of his mentor, the one person who believed in him when everyone else didn't, the only one willing to place his trust in him, the only one who took a chance on him when everyone else mocked him.
"...Raphael, please don't make me leave."
He smiled somberly, shaking his head.
"You must go, Polaris. The Resistance needs you."
Polaris shook his head, tears running down his face. He just found a second family, a place he could call home! He didn't want to lose his family a second time.
"But what about your family? What about Cardo and Glenn?! What about Harana?!"
"Polaris, look at me. Please."
Hesitantly, Polaris looked up, into the dark brown eyes of his mentor. The very ones that gave him hope and faith, the ones that calmed him down whenever he was panicking, the ones that gave him strength when he was at his weakest.
"Escaping this area is impossible, Polaris. You've seen it already. They built this specifically for us. All of our worst fears, our greatest enemies, are all here. They know that it would be too much for us to handle. But you have no enemies here."
He placed his hands on his shoulders.
"You are the only salvation we have. You think this isn't fair? You think forcing children to fight the war is unfair? Then you must go. Run ahead, as fast as you can, and don't look back. Train as hard as you can. Take up arms against them, ravage them from the inside. Take them down, Polaris. And make sure that we - not just our troop, but everyone who died unfairly under their hand - is remembered and brought to justice."
Polaris stared at him in shock, taking in every word.
"...I don't want to leave you..."
"I know you don't. But it's the only way you can survive. Now go."
Polaris' hands tightened into fists. He was crying even more now.
"Raphael - "
"Still alive? How sad." He heard a disembodied voice in front of the cavern entrance.
Polaris didn't remember what happened the next few seconds, but whatever happened, he definitely felt a push. From whom, he didn't remember. But he was pushed, hard, via a powerful pulse that somehow sent him through the ceiling of the cavern, flying over the Stadium's walls. He landed on the grass, hard, enough for him to pass out.
As he saw everything go fuzzy, he turned his head just in time to see Raphael from across the see-through fence, gazing at him, a smile of hope and sadness on his face, before everything finally faded to black.
Polaris cried an endless amount of tears when he woke up. He didn't have to check the reports in the Resistance database to know that they sacrificed themselves to save him. He spent an unknown number of months in his room, unwilling to get up or do anything.
But, eventually, he did what they asked. He took down rogue commanders, rescued children who were under the government's influence, researched better ways to save Skrians without having to murder them, and assisted the child soldiers, including Raphael's child in the uprising and turned the tides of the war.
And now, here their daughter was, standing in front of him, vowing to do the same thing. He wasn't sure what to think.
"...Uncle? Are you alright?"
Polaris snapped out of his thoughts.
"Yes, of course. I was just thinking of your father."
Harana sighed. Polaris chuckled. He knew how much Harana hated hearing that.
"...Again with this, Uncle?"
"Yes. You do. I know you're tired of hearing it, but it's true. And there is no need for you to be annoyed by that. You should be proud."
He glanced at his drawer. A voice in the back of his mind was telling him that perhaps now was the right time.
He opened the drawer, pulling out the jewelry box that Raphael had bequeathed to him days after he was chosen to be one of Harana's godparents. He walks over to her and places his wingtips on her arms, and nudges her to follow him. Harana glanced at the box in curiosity and followed him out of his office and out into the balcony.
"Breathe in the fresh air. Lovely, isn't it?"
She smiled, inhaling the crisp air around her.
"...It is."
"Harana, the night your father befriended me, he told me his deepest fear."
Polaris gazed up at the night stars.
"Really? What did he tell you?"
"He told me that he was afraid that he would be known as nothing. That he wouldn't be able to leave behind a legacy for his family, and that when he died, he would be known as just another soldier who fought for others."
"And that fear was alleviated after he died, of course."
"Mmhmm. And you know what else?"
The Nocturne gazed at him, curiously.
"...He also told me that he was afraid of dying with regrets. That he would die feeling that his life was unfinished. But as it turns out, he has no need to fear that. His legacy is in his children, within each and every one of you."
He gently wrapped a wing around her.
"And I know that he's proud of each and every one of you, but of you most especially. You were kidnapped, bruised, and beaten, and you made it out alive only to be forced to fight through your worst nightmare. And yet, you're still standing here. Confident, and as virtuous and kind as ever, in spite of the darkness you have faced. I could never survive what you went through. You are tougher than you believe you are."
Harana grinned.
"You know, the moment I walked into the enemy base disguised and I laid eyes on you sparring with the simulator, I saw a pair of fairy-bluebirds land right outside the window."
Her eyes widened.
"D-did you really?"
"A message from beyond? Most definitely. After all, fairy bluebirds can't be found near the base's location. They'd have to be brought in, but that wasn't possible at the time. But they were definitely there, for sure, and they turned to me for a moment before flying off. That was when I knew I had to keep a close eye on you."
Harana glanced at her key necklace and took it in her hand, clutching it tightly.
"...Oh, Mama...Papa..." She looked like she wanted to cry. Polaris gently patted her back.
"They wanted to keep you safe. And now that you are old enough... I believe it's time that I gave you this, just in case."
He opened the box to show her. Harana gasped in shock. In the box was a simple silver ring, with her name engraved on it. A gift for her passage into adulthood, which was supposed to be given to her by her parents, but since they weren't around anymore...
"Gods, Uncle, if you were trying to get me to stop crying, it's not working!" She chuckled for a second as tears began to stream down her face. Polaris laughed.
"There, there, now... it'll be alright. Your parents are smiling down on you right now. Here, take it. It's yours now."
Harana smiled, wiping a tear from her eyes as she reached out and took the ring from the box and slid it onto her claw.
"...It looks beautiful. Thank you, Uncle. I needed this." She moved her claw, and the ring seemed to glimmer in the light.
"Now go. Relax and enjoy your Christmas and Night of the Nocturne. I will let you know what you will do later."
Harana smiled as she spread her wings and took off in the direction of the clan square.
"Thanks again, Uncle! Merry Christmas!" She called.
As Harana's silhouette faded into the dusky horizon, Polaris heard a tweet from behind him. He turned to see two fairy-bluebirds, perched atop the snowy roof with happy looks in their eyes. He chuckled and shook his head.
"Couldn't resist checking on your daughter, could you?"
Harana finally managed to land near the middle of the clan square, where everyone was setting their gifts under the clan's Christmas tree.
"...Harana! Thank the gods! Everyone was wondering where you went! Where have you been?!" Rex asked as Harana landed next to him. Harana smiled at him and showed him her ring. It took Rex a moment for him to figure it out. He stared at Harana in shock.
"...Polaris gave it to you?"
Harana nodded, sighing.
"My father gave it to him the day after I was born. Uncle told me that he felt that it was time. What do you think?"
"...It looks beautiful on you." The Skydancer nudges her neck again. Harana giggled.
"Now, what do you say we enjoy tonight, hmm? I got you a lovely gift."
The Nocturne laughs, wrapping a wing around him.
"Of course, Rex." She smiles, looking up at the stars in the sky.
"It truly is the most wonderful time of the year."
