@FelinaeFatale Thank you so much! I'm especially glad you stopped by the Crispy Phoenix -- I had a lot of fun coding it, and it's proven very useful in other players' lore as well. [emoji=four leaf clover size=1]

To begin with, life had not been good for Vincent. “Average again! Are you not a child of one of the Plaguelands’ oldest clans, Vincent?” The young Imperial couldn’t help lowering his gaze—and hating himself for it. He didn’t see what coming from a well-established clan had to do with his grades. As far as he was concerned, his clan and medical studies were worlds apart, and medicine was boring, boring, boring.... “You ought to put your best foot forward if you want to succeed, young drake! If your grades fall any lower, you may want to consider looking elsewhere for your education.” With a last exasperated shake of her head, the school headmistress glided away. Vincent was left to shuffle back to his dorm and consider what lay ahead. It wasn’t terrible—but that in itself was a different kind of terrible. Had he been given a choice, he would have instead left his clan and wandered off to see the world. But he was stuck in a healers’ academy, learning how to be a physician. In his den, the young Imperial was able to relax. He could see the road ahead of him now. It was lined on either side with towering books, medical tomes hemming him in. All he could do was go on...and on...and on. But in the distance, if he squinted, he could see the future, sort of. The light of independence—and freedom. ”Patience, Vincent, your time will come...” He would be grown by the time he completed his studies. Then he would be free to pursue his real interest: the study of Ancient Breeds. In Vincent’s student days, Ancient Breeds weren’t taken seriously. They existed as nothing more than rumors, just theories fueled by odd scraps of history, a brief sighting or two. A lot of these “theories” were really just guesswork, with nothing in the way of evidence to back them up. Idle thoughts and suppositions. Nothing but “What if...?” There was something incredibly tantalizing about “What if...?” however. Vincent was rapidly growing tired of the rigid formulae and procedures involved in medicine. It was all so...precise. Heading out into the wilder reaches of Sornieth, chasing down mysterious dragons and legends—now that was exciting. He managed to pass his studies, boredom be damned, and soon found work as a traveling physician. On the surface, it looked as though he’d given up his crazy dreams and focused on the good, sensible tasks involved in medicine. Deep down, however, Vincent was still very much interested in Ancients. His work provided him with the perfect excuse to travel extensively; he was also a competent physician, and grateful patients were happy to reward him with things that furthered his research. They whispered secret sightings into his ears or pressed written reports into his paws, and Vincent kept in contact with them and other like-minded researchers as he continued traversing Sornieth. They’re out there. That was what all the secrets and reports said. A thread of mystery, a thread of hope, tugging him ever onward. Till one day the news came from the Southern Icefield, and it was not a secretive whisper but instead a triumphant roar— “They’re here!” The dragons had come from the Sunbeam Ruins, and there were four of them: a diplomat, a guide, and two guards. Vincent exchanged more messages with them, arranging to meet them a few days hence. That was when he got to know them and their objectives in more detail. “We’re very interested in forging an alliance with the Gaolers,” said Hiveriel the Tundra. He was the diplomat—to be precise, the Ice Ambassador of the Disillusionists. He seemed very much like an eager young hatchling, however, as he leaned forward and asked, “We’ve heard that there are some clans up in the Cloudscape Crags. Do you know of any that might be interested in having diplomatic relations with us? We can offer the services of skilled workers or trade various goods with them.” Vincent could appreciate his enthusiasm. He’d felt much the same months before, when the Gaolers had finally revealed themselves. He’d been fortunate enough to be in the Starfall Isles at that time. By then, he had been studying the Ancients for some years and had acquired a reputation as a scholar—though he’d been regarded with varying degrees of respect. Some dragons had taken his work seriously; others had mocked him for pursuing what’d been presumed to be fanciful legends. And then the Gaolers had appeared, and Vincent’s reputation had drastically changed. He was now acknowledged as a leading researcher, his hard work praised by dragons from all over the continent. It had been easy enough for him to charter a ship to the Southern Icefield and there speak with the Gaolers who had come forward. Many of them were representing their clans, groups who were interested in learning more about the outside world and forming ties with other dragons. When Hiveriel heard this, his ears perked up. He called his guide over and had Vincent mark routes on a map he brought out. “I spoke with a young Gaoler of the Seeker order. A bright young fellow; I’m sure you’ll get along.” Vincent’s whiskers twitched as he smiled. “He said that his clan is located right around...here.” He circled a patch among the Cloudscape Crags. Hiveriel’s face fell as he considered how difficult the ascent would be, but his guide, Tindalos, remained impassive. The Coatl explained that by the time they got to the Southern Icefield, the weather conditions would be more favorable. Failing that, they could hire a weather-worker; many clans were eager to contact the Gaolers, and so there were also plenty of other dragons willing to facilitate their journeys. And this, too, Vincent had done. He delicately shook the smaller dragon’s paw and then watched as he excitedly led his group away. He was sure that their mission would be a success. The Gaoler he’d spoken to had been quite happy to meet him, and Vincent didn’t doubt that the rest of his clan would be welcoming towards the visitors as well. And that had been some months ago, and now here Vincent was, among the Disillusionists. He wasn’t familiar with them, and in fact, that meeting with Hiveriel and his retinue at the Outsider’s Outpost was the first he’d ever heard of them. He’d had no reason to expect that they would ever contact him again, much less on an emergency regarding Ancients. Or rather, an Ancient egg... He stared, bug-eyed, at it. The egg had been accorded a special place in the nesting grounds, swaddled in shimmering blankets. It looked no different from other Ice eggs—until one held it up to the light. Then the hatchling could be seen through the thick shell, covered in luxuriant hair and with unmistakable branching horns. A Gaoler. “How did you get this?” he gasped, turning to Hiveriel. The Tundra was crouched next to him, and the eagerness Vincent had seen in him last time was gone. He now wore a rather despondent look. “Well, it wasn’t like we had a choice. I mean, nobody else was there.” “How do you mean that? I was told there was a clan of about fifty Gaolers living there.” “There might’ve been at some point,” Hiveriel agreed, “but when we arrived, the lair was empty....” Snow lay thickly on the ground. It was slow going even for the Tundra, and he huffed and puffed heavily as he struggled up along the craggy trails. And stood, breathless, staring at the lair. It was a crack in the rocks, narrow and high. Perhaps it had been cunningly disguised before. Now, however, it gaped, dark against the snow like a deep, black wound. Only darkness lay beyond. And the smell, sharp and foreboding, that permeated the air—the scent of sweat and of fear. The scent of blood. Noemi dropped down from above. She landed protectively in front of Hiveriel, murmuring, “Something happened here.” “I’ll say,” agreed Jubilant. He looped over Hiveriel’s head, squinting at the cave. “D’you sense anybody in there?” The Skydancer shook her head. “No...nobody. If this is the lair we were told of, it looks recently abandoned.” “But why would they—” Hiveriel broke off. A shiver rippled along his flanks, and his blue fur puffed up. He stared ahead, wide-eyed and apprehensive, and said, “OK, let’s take a look.” They moved forward, Noemi and Jubilant in the lead, and Hiveriel and Tindalos lagging behind. Hiveriel was rather embarrassed to admit that he hadn’t visited his homeland for years, and he looked at Tindalos and queried, “What do you make of it, Tin?” “Can’t rightly say,” hummed the Coatl, seemingly as unfazed as ever. “The Gaolers, if this was really their lair, could’ve left for a variety of reasons.” “But they knew we were coming. We sent word to them before leaving the Starfall Isles; they said ‘we’re looking forward to meeting you’ and all that. Why would...?” They were now just within the entrance of the lair. Hiveriel trailed off, suddenly conscious of how his voice was echoing. His nostrils flared, and he drank in the scent of the cavern. Snow. Cold. Those were the pervading smells; the entrance had been open for some time. Hiveriel lowered his head, sniffed more deeply. There, underneath the chill of the snow—he could smell dragons, a hitherto-unfamiliar breed. The Gaolers. And over all that, faintly, like the lightest dusting of frost: the scent of a battle, of confusion and of death. Now even Tindalos was getting rattled. “We should move on soon,” he cautioned them, backing out the doorway. But the others weren’t quite as edgy as he was. Hiveriel’s tail waved uncertainly. “We should check. See if there’s anybody alive or...some clue...” He cleared his throat uncomfortably. And so they moved deeper into the cavern. The light faded from outside; there were torches and lanterns along the sides of the passageway, but they’d gone out long ago. Strangely, it seemed almost sacrilegious to relight them, and so the visitors didn’t dare. They produced their own light sources and picked their way forward gingerly. Snow lay over everything—but not heavily enough to conceal the signs...Here a broken cot, and there some shattered bowls. Withered vegetation lay beside an upturned feeding trough. Wordlessly Noemi beat her wings, brushing away the plants, and she and the others stared at the claw marks cleaving through the wood. “Well, we know they were getting enough to eat,” Tindalos mumbled—evidently he’d been entertaining the thought that the Gaolers had attempted to devour each other. Jubilant answered, “It looks like a big fight broke out, but where...wait. Where did Hiveriel go?” They doubled back the way they’d come, whispering rather than calling for him. Relief broke over them like a wave when they saw his bright blue face peeking around a corner. “You’d better come see this,” he told them gravely. The room had been a nursery once. There was evidence that the fight had spilled over here, but only briefly—apparently the battling Gaolers had wanted to preserve the eggs. Not that it mattered, because what eggs there were left had died in the cold. The visitors stared, aghast, at the nests lining the walls. “All of them?” Even Tindalos’ voice was hoarse. Hiveriel coughed thickly. “I would say so. The room was open....Maybe whoever left it like this didn’t notice or was intending to come back.” Only they hadn’t come back and so, without the magic of a caretaker, the Gaoler hatchlings had perished. The Disillusionists drifted around the room, stunned by the enormity of what had happened here. And then Noemi’s antennae twitched. She bustled to a nest. “Over here—I think one’s still alive!” The others darted over. Carefully they lifted aside the dead eggs and furs—and helped Noemi extract a living egg. Still bright and glittering, pulsing with Ice magic. The shape of a Gaoler hatchling could be dimly seen inside. Hiveriel’s jaw dropped. He pulled off his cloak and quickly bundled the egg up in it. The others, meanwhile, busied themselves with inspecting the other nests. But the other eggs remained lifeless, and Noemi detected no more traces of magic here. The egg she’d found, it appeared, was the lone survivor. “What should we do, Hiveriel?” “I don’t know. What happened here was...We don’t know what happened here.” He anxiously smoothed his fur. There would be no alliance with this clan—whoever they’d been. Not anymore. Their best recourse was to retrace their steps, perhaps report the situation to any exalted authorities.... “And the egg?” “We’ll take it with us. I mean, we can’t leave it here. Maybe we can find someone else.” And Hiveriel turned, thinking, thinking. “Someone who knows about Ancients...” Vincent was quiet for a long time afterwards. He stroked his beard and queried, “Did you ever find out what’d become of them?” Hiveriel shook his head. “The exalts said they’d contact us if they needed our assistance, but we haven’t heard from them since. That was a really secretive clan, did you know that?” He cocked a pale eye at Vincent. “The dragons we talked to were surprised they’d even been there.” “All Gaolers are secretive. It’s how they hid from us in the first place.” Vincent sighed heavily and looked down at the egg. “And to be frank, I don’t know as much about them as I’d like to think.” “You know more than most people do,” Hiveriel pointed out. “We haven’t found anybody else who could give us more information than just ‘maybes’ and ‘perhapses’—and with a hatchling’s life at stake, ‘maybes’ and ‘perhapses’ aren’t good enough. Master Vincent, you’re the only dragon we know of right know who’s actually familiar—and I mean really familiar—with Gaolers. Maybe you don’t know much about caring for a Gaoler egg, but frankly, that’s more than we’ve got, and I think I speak for my entire clan when I say that we’d all feel much better having you around.” The Imperial considered it gravely. He’d never had children before, and any interactions he’d had with youngsters had been in a strictly professional sense: they’d either been patients or relatives of patients. Still, the Disillusionists were a well-equipped clan, and with the aid of their own childminders, Vincent felt he could manage. He reached into his satchel and pulled out some notebooks. “I’ve got some literature I can refer to. I’ll probably need to consult with the rest of your clan from time to time, though.” “That’s reasonable. So you’re up to it, then?” “Essentially, yes. I don’t think I’d stop kicking myself in the head if I walked away from this,” Vincent admitted wryly. Hiveriel laughed. He was still nervous—it was all too evident in the way his fur remained fluffed—but he turned and motioned towards the doorway. “Let’s go see the clan leaders, then. We’ll iron things out more formally and get you settled in.” “Right.” And with a last backwards look at the egg, Vincent followed Hiveriel out the door. Back in the Gaolers’ lair, snow continued to fall. It lay more thickly on the ground...and was disturbed, briefly, by the passage of another dragon. A Gaoler, still very much alive, her fur as blue as the gathering twilight. She was old; rage and grief had added more years to her face. And she had very nearly been crushed by despair: After having dispatched those who’d destroyed her clan, she had returned here—and realized that the door to the nesting grounds had been left open. Without the clan’s magic to nourish them, her lairmates’ unhatched children had perished inside their eggs. She had allowed her berserk rage to cloud her perceptions, with devastatingly fatal results. Guilt had nearly overwhelmed her then. It was only that scent, as faint yet as strong as a spider’s thread, that had drawn her back to reality. The scent of a Gaoler child, still living, who had been taken away. It was mixed in with the scents of unfamiliar dragons. Were they friend or foe? The old Gaoler could only hope it was the former—but hope was not enough. She needed to know. The lair lay lifeless and abandoned, and perhaps it would always be. The Gaoler turned her back on it and followed the trail towards the dawn. ~ to be continued Credits: Special thanks to ShadowPiper for allowing their characters and lair to appear in this story. ----- PREV. Dragon | Contents • Characters A-M N-Z • Stories Pt. 5 | NEXT Dragon

Life was good for Vincent. Though he had arrived in the Shifting Expanse only a month ago, he felt that he had settled in quite well. He had spent some very productive weeks at the Outsider’s Outpost, continuing his research on Ancients—some of the residents had been willing to share their information, and their personal oddities hadn’t bothered the scholar at all. Things had been very, very different years ago, however. To begin with, life had not been good for Vincent.

“Average again! Are you not a child of one of the Plaguelands’ oldest clans, Vincent?”

The young Imperial couldn’t help lowering his gaze—and hating himself for it.

”Patience, Vincent, your time will come...”

He would be grown by the time he completed his studies.

Nothing but “What if...?”

There was something incredibly tantalizing about “What if...?” however.

Till one day the news came from the Southern Icefield, and it was not a secretive whisper but instead a triumphant roar—

“They’re here!”

RIivrJW.png

The dragons had come from the Sunbeam Ruins, and there were four of them: a diplomat, a guide, and two guards.

We can offer the services of skilled workers or trade various goods with them.”

Vincent could appreciate his enthusiasm.

“He said that his clan is located right around...here.”

He circled a patch among the Cloudscape Crags.

WiEtOlo.png

I mean, nobody else was there.”

“How do you mean that? I was told there was a clan of about fifty Gaolers living there.”

“There might’ve been at some point,” Hiveriel agreed, “but when we arrived, the lair was empty....”

mJcxb9U.png

Snow lay thickly on the ground.

She landed protectively in front of Hiveriel, murmuring, “Something happened here.”

“I’ll say,” agreed Jubilant. He looped over Hiveriel’s head, squinting at the cave. “D’you sense anybody in there?”

The Skydancer shook her head. “No...nobody. If this is the lair we were told of, it looks recently abandoned.”

“But why would they—” Hiveriel broke off. A shiver rippled along his flanks, and his blue fur puffed up. He stared ahead, wide-eyed and apprehensive, and said, “OK, let’s take a look.”

They moved forward, Noemi and Jubilant in the lead, and Hiveriel and Tindalos lagging behind. Hiveriel was rather embarrassed to admit that he hadn’t visited his homeland for years, and he looked at Tindalos and queried, “What do you make of it, Tin?”

“Can’t rightly say,” hummed the Coatl, seemingly as unfazed as ever. “The Gaolers, if this was really their lair, could’ve left for a variety of reasons.”

“But they knew we were coming. We sent word to them before leaving the Starfall Isles; they said ‘we’re looking forward to meeting you’ and all that. Why would...?”

They were now just within the entrance of the lair.

Where did Hiveriel go?”

They doubled back the way they’d come, whispering rather than calling for him. Relief broke over them like a wave when they saw his bright blue face peeking around a corner. “You’d better come see this,” he told them gravely.

4RcHACo.png

The room had been a nursery once. There was evidence that the fight had spilled over here, but only briefly—apparently the battling Gaolers had wanted to preserve the eggs.

Not that it mattered, because what eggs there were left had died in the cold. The visitors stared, aghast, at the nests lining the walls.

All of them?” Even Tindalos’ voice was hoarse. Hiveriel coughed thickly. “I would say so. The room was open....Maybe whoever left it like this didn’t notice or was intending to come back.”

Only they hadn’t come back and so, without the magic of a caretaker, the Gaoler hatchlings had perished. The Disillusionists drifted around the room, stunned by the enormity of what had happened here.

And then Noemi’s antennae twitched. She bustled to a nest. “Over here—I think one’s still alive!”

The others darted over.

“What should we do, Hiveriel?”

“I don’t know. What happened here was...We don’t know what happened here.” He anxiously smoothed his fur. There would be no alliance with this clan—whoever they’d been. Not anymore. Their best recourse was to retrace their steps, perhaps report the situation to any exalted authorities....

“And the egg?”

“We’ll take it with us. I mean, we can’t leave it here. Maybe we can find someone else.” And Hiveriel turned, thinking, thinking.

“Someone who knows about Ancients...”

fnTbJc9.png

Vincent was quiet for a long time afterwards. He stroked his beard and queried, “Did you ever find out what’d become of them?”

Hiveriel shook his head. “The exalts said they’d contact us if they needed our assistance, but we haven’t heard from them since. That was a really secretive clan, did you know that?” He cocked a pale eye at Vincent. “The dragons we talked to were surprised they’d even been there.”

“All Gaolers are secretive. It’s how they hid from us in the first place.” Vincent sighed heavily and looked down at the egg. “And to be frank, I don’t know as much about them as I’d like to think.”

“You know more than most people do,” Hiveriel pointed out. Maybe you don’t know much about caring for a Gaoler egg, but frankly, that’s more than we’ve got, and I think I speak for my entire clan when I say that we’d all feel much better having you around.”

The Imperial considered it gravely.

I’ll probably need to consult with the rest of your clan from time to time, though.”

“That’s reasonable. So you’re up to it, then?”

“Essentially, yes.

We’ll iron things out more formally and get you settled in.”

“Right.” And with a last backwards look at the egg, Vincent followed Hiveriel out the door.

HQQEbIT.png

» OVERVIEW
Records are divided into two categories: first are the official ones, which are generally about legal or commercial issues — weddings, alliances, sales agreements, and so on. These records are well-organized and are handled by specially appointed scribes or archivists. Most of these are accessible to all clan members; some are available to the public.

Next, there are the unofficial records. These are created for personal reasons or entertainment and include diaries and memoirs. A lot of these are members-only.

Literature serves as another source of income for the clan. Lore-wise, commissions are handled by the Disillusionists as a whole: Shopkeepers take down notes from customers, and the clan's regular team of writers creates a few rough drafts of a story. These commissions can include clerical work (e.g. they help other clans with their own records); helping other dragons set down their own experiences; or articles and stories, both fictional and non-. The writers may consult their clanmates for advice on other fields, or hand the work over to them for proofreading. Since money from commissions goes into the community coffers, it's in the Disillusionists' best interests to work as a team.

{ overview + possible connections }
» OVERVIEW
This clan has built its reputation on playing nice with everybody, and they would really like to keep it that way. Hence the Diplomacy Bloc! The Disillusionists’ diplomats are a small but solid bunch who are dedicated to keeping the clan from Saying Things They Might Regret in the Morning and Throwing Hands.

Diplomats are highly trained. In addition to being skilled at talking circles around other people (nicely, of course), they are expected to be experts on the customs of their homeland and to keep themselves updated with current events, particularly politics and business. The result of this fine-tuned training is that diplomats tend to be just a bit too specialized — for example, the Fire rep might know some useful tidbits about the neighboring Shifting Expanse, but that’ll probably be as far as it goes.

All the diplomats get along very well with one another (their entire profession does revolve around maintaining friendships, or at least a respectable semblance of them). They will readily fill in each other’s knowledge gaps, and they frequently get together to exchange info on the latest news, alliances, and so on.

What follows is a list of dragons who are important to various diplomatic proceedings. This includes not just the aforementioned highly-trained diplomats, who are all lean, mean, peacebrokering machines, but also the clan leaders, whom I must admit usually join the discussions for the sake of formality. (They are doing their best, though, I promise.)

In my writings, the terms “Ambassador” and “Representative” are used interchangeably for the Flight reps.
