Roleplay

Tell stories and roleplay in the world of Flight Rising.
TOPIC | RP Training Grounds (open, all welcome!)
Striding into the gathering with an almost palpable intensity, the caribbean colored ridgeback pauses only briefly to give her newfound pupils a few purposeful looks. Dragons of all shapes, sizes, and breeds face her - some lounging on the open grass while others crouch intently atop the rocks littering the landscape.

On finding a suitably high rock to settle herself upon, the ridgeback flutters her wings a bit as she gets comfortable. She curls her tail around the base of the rock before taking another surveying look at the gathering. Content that she has their undivided attention, she raps a claw against the rock before speaking.

"Welcome, everyone, to my class." Her voice, though raspy, is not entirely unpleasant. "I'm pleased to see so many of you joining me today. I am Annelyse, of the fire flight. Though we come together here in defiance of our backgrounds, flights, and clans so that we may learn from each other."

A few low murmurs can be heard towards the back of the crowd. The ridgeback tilts her head to one side before speaking again.

"If that bothers you, you are more than welcomed to leave."

A guardian and snapper in the distance shoot each other furtive, but guilty glances before falling silent and paying attention once more.

"That's what I thought." Annelyse offers a dangerous smile before continuing her address. "You are here because you want to learn how to interact with your fellow dragonkin. I am here to teach you, as I have done with many that have come before. In my clan I am charged with rearing the hatchlings, so I have a bit of a knack for imparting wisdom on those that aren't sure how to ask for help."

A small fae dragon flits into the air, darting around anxiously. He falters a bit in the air before squeaking out "B...but...what if we are shy?" and then cowering atop a nearby rock.

"No need to be." the teacher leans a bit to one side, relaxing her sinuous form. Seeing her relax, several nearby dragons exhale loudly before stretching out in relative comfort as well.

"We're all here to learn. There's no need to be nervous. I want to help you break out of your shell and really begin enjoying interactions with your fellow dragons." Annelyse smiles again, this time in a more jovial manner. "So please, feel free to ask me your questions and interact with your classmates. I want this to be a great experience for everyone here."

((OOCly: The purpose of this thread is for users who have never RPed before/are unsure of breaking into RP circles to come and ask questions, ICly, to practice in a non-stressful environment. We have an RP FAQ here, but I wanted to do this for newbie players or current players that want to try RP but aren't sure where to start. This is a safe, fun environment for anyone to join and RP in, so please do not be afraid to post.

Feel free to interact with Annelyse and I will respond appropriately. If you don't have a question but would rather practice making RP posts, that's totally fine too. I would prefer all posts have an RP/IC section, but you may attach OOC questions to the posts for me, or your fellow RPers to answer.

Please make your interactions specific to this environment. It's an open gathering of dragons - what would your character do amongst them? This is specifically flight rising RP as well, so please no vampires, werewolves, or the like. There are no literacy requirements here, and there is NO pressure to write the next great dragon novel. You are free to post uninhibited, with no expectations, as long as you stay to the subject of the thread.

If you're a veteran RPer, you are welcome to participate as well. My hope is that we can get a fun, inclusive, and ongoing RP started so that new role players have "training grounds" to feel safe/participate in. :)

If you have any questions, feel free to message me directly! If not, feel free to post!))

((This is a great great idea! Way to go Amalythia!))

Anemi, a tall maize and jade skydancer, stood in the background of the group, with a silver and purple fae on her head. Ftero leaned her head upside down to look Anemi in the eyes. "I'm so so so excited! I've never seen a ridgeback before! Oh look over there! It's a mirror, like Skia and Oniros. Oh! Oh! And a guardian like grandma!" The little Fae said, referring to the rest of the clan they left at home. Anemi had brought the young one her, because she had begged and begged. "Anemi, your the best Aunt ever!" She said, squeezing the skydancers ears.

Ithildae, a royal and shadow colored fae, led the newest member to her clan into the clearing. She spoke to the Stonewash and ice colored youngling behind her, "Come along Icesong we don't want to miss anything." Icesong looked about him with a bit or worry in his eyes, he spotted a rock with a hollow in it and darted for it tucking himself inside. Ithildae sighed and fluttered her way towards the edge of the gathering and settled on the ground in front of the rock. 'Looks like I've got a skittish one on my hands' she thought to herself as she sat back on her tail and pondered her situation. "Come out Icesong there isn't anything to be afraid of out here, just a group of friendly dragonkin that would probably like to say hello." She peered in and saw Icesong curl tighter around his little pearl before retorting, "No! I like it in here and how do you know they are nice dragons huh?". Well back to the drawing board, Ithildae was short on options. Either she could try to magic him out, that could hurt the little guy, or she could seek help.

Sensing movement towards the back of the gathering, Annelyse squints a bit as she looks on.

"Ah, I think I see a few groups of folks joining us."

( @GiftOfArtemis )She motions quickly to the skydancer, her eyesight not keen enough to spot the fae. "Come, join us if you'd like. We welcome anyone here who is curious about their brethren."

( @Shadowstar ) Turning to the other newcomers, the ridgeback offers them a polite smile. "And you too, little fae. I thought I heard someone else enter with you, but I don't see anyone. Then again my dragonsight isn't what it used to be."

Ftero flew to the rock with Icesong in it. She sat on top of the rock, peering into his hidie hole. "Oh my gosh what type-a dragon are yoouuuuu?" She said, all of it sounding like one string of words.

Anemi shook her head at the Fae. Turning to the ridgeback she said, "were okay back here. Thank you though" she gave one of her brilliant smiles.

(@Amalythia) Ithildae looked up from her pondering and waved one of her wing at the bright blue Ridgeback that had greeted her. "You are correct I came in with one of the newest members to my clan, but he has developed a bit of fright with so many about. I am trying to coax him out into the gathering to say hello and maybe play." She sighed lightly and bounced into the air to hover a few inches off the ground only to drop back down when her wings scattered dust at Icesong.

(@GiftOfArtemis) Still pondering she didn't notice the silver and purple fae land on the rock above her head. She jumped a bit when a fae head cam into view and spoke to Icesong. To Ithildae the words were fairly clear only because she was used to hearing others of her kind speak so quickly, but she doubted Icesong could. Her doubts were re-affirmed when Icesong looked up startled but curious.

Icesong looked at the silver and purple fae who had spoken what, he could only assume, was speech. Still nervous he clutched his tiny pearl a bit closer and said "Hello....um..I am sorry but I couldn't understand what you said. I'm.." he ducked his head to nervous to continue for a moment. He heard Ithildae speak outside his hiding spot, "It's okay you can talk with her you'll be fine." Knowing his friend was nearby he tried again, "I'm not used to fast speech, maybe if you spoke a little slower I could understand you a little better." The last bit was a little rushed but clearer.

Ftero laughed, high pitched and bubbly, and it sounded almost like music. "Sorry. I asked what kind of dragon you are. My name is Ftero." she said a bit slower, with a smile.

Anemi turned to Ithildae. "This is my niece. Shes a bit excited. I'm Anemi." The skydancer bowed her head.

Icesong smiled a bit at Ftero's laughter. "I am a pearlcatcher dragon, and my name is Icesong. I am newly adopted by Ithildae," he used his snout to motion at the royal colored fae, "I came along hoping to ..um..maybe make some new friends..." He ducked his head a bit but had relaxed some.

Ithildae looked at Anemi, "pleased to make yours and Ftero's aquantiance, my name is Ithildae and the shy one there is Icesong. He is my newly adopted son. He asked to come along because he was curious but I think he didn't realize there would be so many here." She sighed a bit but smiled to, "He is a sweet one." Looking over she saw the end of Icesong's snout poking out of the hole in the rock. "Well look at that" she murmured.

Two Light Mirrors were among the crowd. At the suggestion that they check out the event, Inkfell observed that it was likely more intended for those who weren't so swift learners.
"No need to patronise based on processing speed or maturity." Was Melreyna's response.
"Well, it depends what you mean by the latter," Inkfell muttered before speaking to Melreyna again, "well, not everyone is necessarily as into such thorough questioning as you are from the outset-"
"-Precisely!" She smiled at her crimson companion. "Reasons have yet to be observed in an amount qualifying as sufficient (currently remote), to indicate that such an approach to activity should cease!"

With that, she walked over to the Ridgeback who had been inviting any attendees with questions, "what would your comment or observation be regarding length of speech? Similarly, what is the case that you know of as regards the identification of specific quirks of speech that may reflect upbringing or some other influence upon the likes of accent and dialec, and what the correct terms for those might be?"

Inkfell shook his head and glanced around at the crowd, "sorry, we're not all as...verbose, as she is. She'll probably linger as long as she has questions," he commented aloud.

((OOC: I'll put a few questions here that don't make so much sense for Melreyna to ask in this context.
Would someone clearly tell me what people mean when they talk about their 'muse', with a lower case 'm'? As in, is it literally the source of inspiration as wiktionary states it, or is it more of a creativity juice (if that makes sense)? Since people talk about running out of it, or about losing it, or it being fickle, I think. Ech, I guess there just isn't a clear (enough XP) link between what I know of its meaning and the uses observed.
Any general advice about what to do if the group starts peetering out (and it's not a fixed plot thing)?

Another question of 'semantics' (woot! I know I'm not the only one looking to study linguistics this year. ^^), is there actually a difference between when an RP is 'full' or 'closed' or is the former one that was formerly (as it were) open, and no longer is, and that the latter can be regarded as similar to 'private', or does it just vary based on one's own preferences or something?))

The silver Fae quickened the beating of his wings, well aware (a little late) of his tardiness. His new gear had arrived today, and he had been so eager to take it for a test flight that he'd forgotten his promise to Shallyn. Go to this class; it'll be good for you, she had said, and he'd responded cheerfully, Of course I will! And, well, here he was, fooling around in the sky, distinctly not at this class. He wished he hadn't left his pocketwatch behind.

Below, many specks had already accumulated in the highland grass, presumably attending the gathering. One of those specks should be me, thought Felnyr, angling his white wings in line with the mechanical ones attached on top as he prepared for his descent.

Drawing power from the connected electrical source, he dove, his two pairs of wings frantically propelling him downwards with a whirr. An idle skywatcher might have mistaken him for a crazed hummingbird.

Felnyr gave little thought to much else besides arriving at his destination no later than he already was - that is, until the ground began to draw closer at an alarming rate. He realized the flaw in his plan and immediately attempted to propel himself upward, but he would not have enough time to achieve a proper landing. He needed a new plan. Right now.

Noticing that the landscape nearby sank in a minor tilt, he pushed himself in that direction, hoping to buy more time to slow down before he hit the ground. If I can just circle here-

His thoughts came to a halt at the same time as his body, and the land went black for a few moments while he slid painfully off a somewhat warm surface. He heard several gasps, but between the loss of vision and the twang of pain that had spread all over his body, he wasn't sure if he had imagined them.

Finally recovering his eyesight, Felnyr looked through foggy eyes at the towering Caribbean Ridgeback that he'd probably crashed into. "Ah, hi, sorry about that," he ventured weakly. "I heard there was a class, um, meeting, and I hope I'm in the right place, and I'm very sorry about crashing into you but you see, I was-" Felnyr reconsidered providing his explanation. "Er, I apologize for crashing into you."

Wonderful, he thought, spotting a nearby Wildclaw politely trying to hold back her amusement. Show up late, crash into the - I think she's the teacher?, and break my new gear. I've made an excellent first impression already. At least my power pack didn't shock anyone...? Also, OW. If I was any other breed, I'd probably be dead right now.
