Silene refers to the wine-making Greek deity Silenus. This Greek god was often covered by a sticky foam. The red champion roots can be boiled to form a soap substitute. In Victorian England, the flower is symbolic for gentleness and youthful love, or a snare, since the sticky stems could trap smaller insects.[/s][/indent]
