They commonly live on cliff faces or on the trunks and branches of other plants as epiphytes. They also make very popular house plants and are fairly easy to care for. Tillandsia tectorum are especially unique for their fuzzy appearance, which is the result of dense hair-like trichomes and makes them more efficient at absorbing water. They're very drought-tolerant (and vulnerable to over-watering) and more of a desert plant than a rainforest one, but many other species of Tillandsia live in rainforests. Viscera was a mess, and she knew it. It had been a mistake to come here alone. She had barely made it through alive. Stupidly, she'd thought she could tackle the most difficult parts by air, but the hostile landscape had foiled her, catching her out with a darting tangle of thorns that had ripped into her right wing, crippling her flight and forcing her to crawl through miles of stony desert. Behind her lay a vast wasteland, populated only by spiny lizards and poisonous insects and arachnids. Her shredded limbs and parched throat were her souvenirs of that barren place. But ahead... Scant clouds scudded across the darkening sky, yet somehow the tree was illuminated, as if from below. The tangle of branches reached upward to form a dense canopy, and something in the pre-twilight air cast a deep vermilion glow across the rocky outcrop where it grew. Forcing herself to her feet, Viscera shook her proud head. "Not far," she told herself grimly, swiftly calculating the miles left to go. "Not far." Her opalescent hide glittered like liquid in the dying light, turning her into a shimmering droplet on the skin of the world, dripping ever closer to the tree. It stood, watchful as a sentry, casting a long and deep shadow on the burnt earth. Inch by painful inch, step by torturous step, she edged ever closer while the sun set, deepening the crimson flush upon the rock and scrub. At last, as the last sliver of the sun set behind the distant mountains, she found herself in the shadow of the fabled dragon blood tree. Exhausted, drained, she let herself crumple, torn wings pooling around her, utterly spent. And in her sleep, the tree came to her. She felt her body pulse with the energy of the tree. Its bloody sap flowed freely from a wound-like gash in its trunk, along each branch and root until it trickled across her ragged body. She caught the scent - the smell of organic gore, but mixed with the heady, rich scent of sandalwood and bark. It overpowered her, making her dizzy, and each finger of viscous sap wrapped her in its sticky embrace. Supported by a hundred streams of dragon's blood, it lifted her into the air, suspending her in its trails, reaching up and entwining her with its roots. Her flesh seethed; the liquid spread like fire across her skin. It melted, slick and wet, to coat her supple hide, knitting together and mending the rents and cuts. After days, hours, minutes - she never knew how long she hung there, coiled up in the dragon blood tree - the heat awoke her. A new sunrise. The golden warmth streamed onto her healed body. Every nerve and sinew seemed refreshed and renewed, reawakened to the possibilities of a new day. Gratefully, Viscera bowed reverently to the tree, basking in its cooling shade. She placed a claw on the gaping wound in the trunk, and for a moment, felt the powerful throb of a living heart.
