A large, seemingly bottomless rift opened in the middle of the Four's territory, emanating an aura of malice and unease. It was seen as a bad omen and almost triggered the clan into moving away from the area until Malik suggested that they study its potential use as a source of materials and power. It manipulated the clan into offering it sacrifices, and was the driving force behind the creation of the Madness Flight and the start of the Shattered War. It was sealed with a powerful magical ritual and laid dormant underground for centuries. The clan of Chasm Peak was eventually established on top of where the original rift had been. [size=4][b][u]Effects of Abyssal Energy:[/u][/b][/size] The further one descends into the Abyss, the stronger effect it has on their psyche. For dragons like Malik that took multiple trips down and stayed there for long periods, drastic personality changes have been witnessed. According to other medical research, Abyssal energy can affect bodily functions like the immune system. The influence the Abyss has on one's mind and body can be severe and are often long-lasting. [size=4][b][u]Geography/Ecology:[/u][/b][/size] Deep within the Abyss, there is no sunlight. The few sources of light are produced by bioluminescent mushrooms and certain Abyssal creatures. Predators and scavengers lurk in the shadows, waiting to pounce on anything unlucky enough to fall down. According to maps of the place that have been preserved, there is a centralized large cavern linked to many ravines and tunnels. The Madness Flight was said to have been based in that cavern and performed their sacrifices there. Since the Abyss was sealed, very few dragons have explored it and so much of the intel is considered unconfirmed. They happened centuries ago and spanned around a decade. The fights were often initiated due to land disputes or clashes in principles. The wars eventually ended as over time the four flights learned to live in harmony and together established a single united clan under the Four. The Death Flight was widely considered to be the strongest flight, as despite its smaller size it consisted mostly of survivors from clans that had been wiped out. They employed sheer force and military tactics. The Creation Flight was regarded as the second strongest and had the largest army, as they were willing to take anyone in. While they were somewhat uncoordinated, they held the advantage of numbers. The Time Flight remained fairly neutral, only fighting to defend themselves, but used superior technology to dominate the battlefield. These flights were not centered around deities like the Earthshaker, but rather around ideas. While they initially clashed in the Godless Wars, they would become one united clan under the Four. After the Shattered War, the clan would fade into obscurity with only a few descendants remaining today. However, the influence of the Godless Flights is still a cornerstone of Chasm Peak's culture today. Many disciples of the Wild specialized in certain types of biomes, and would be consulted as the expert when the flight traveled through those areas. They were known for their military might, but they also had established customs such as funeral rites and prayers sent to the dead. Shadow magic was also common in this flight. To this day, descendants of the Creation Flight are often famous for their creations such as paintings, stories or sculptures. After being defeated in the Shattered War, they were banished and cast down into the darkness for their deeds, where their descendants supposedly remain to this day. It lasted around 2-3 years and was named after the earthquake that kick-started it— the Great Shattering. Some of the key players on the side of the Four included Elasia (leader of the Wild Flight and a strong tactician), Dopson (a disciple of Death also known as the War God), and the Butterfly Knights, who sought to avenge their master who had sacrificed himself unknowingly to the Abyss. On the side of the Abyss, there was Archleone (a former disciple of Death serving as their tactician and general), Lunacy and Havoc (a mated pair whose bloodthirst knew no bounds). [size=4][b][u]Timeline:[/u][/b][/size] Directly after the Great Shattering, the war began. Initially, it looked like the Four had the advantage, as they possessed sheer numbers. However, the Madness Flight's research on the Abyss allowed them to summon Abyssal creatures to do their bidding, and suddenly the scales were even again. The fighting went back and forth, with the side of the Four often taking heavy losses due to the injured being affected by Abyssal energy. During one particular battle, Archleone faced off against her former ally Dopson in what would later be known as the Duel of Death. They fought each other for an entire day, with Dopson's overwhelming close-combat skills versus Archleone's underhanded tactics and nimble strikes. The duel ended in a draw as an earthquake forced both to retreat. The war eventually ended after Malik's capture and Archleone's death, as without two of its three leaders the Madness Flight collapsed due to infighting. Victims of the war are remembered through a memorial located in the historical section of the Gilded Hall.
