Day 7 Saturday Thanks for hosting; this was so fun! It can make noodles!” As the clan’s main experts in food technology, Minju (former member of Team Strinjale) and her husband, Jae, are pleased to be working with Mochi today. They had been spectating this entire time and kept track of all the dishes Mochi had cooked. Together, the two want to teach Mochi how to make a new, complicated, but still fun, dish. One that will be the perfect ending to the Mist Jam. She’ll have to wait and see what the mandatory ingredients will be, but the plan is to make some type of savoury jam and noodles. But they can’t tell Mochi what to do, they have to subtlety nudge her in the right direction. Hence this little kitchen gadget show they’re putting on for Mochi. “As you spin this handle the dough will be cut by these shaped blades, and that’s how you can get noodles. You’ve eaten noodles before Mochi, they’re yummy!” Jae was doing his best to sell this, and Mochi’s just staring at the sev sancha, deeply considering. Thankfully Minju knew how to sweeten the deal. “Very yummy, if you cook them perfectly. And they can be eaten hot or cold, in a soup or stir-fry, with a dressing and sauce. You can even keep it really simple, add some cheese and a stick of butter and you got buttered noodles.” Mochi’s eyes widen. “Butter!! Noodles!!” The Mauler of Butter cheered. Minju and Jae gave each a low five.
Use at least THREE of the following ingredients in your entry: [item=Lion's Mane Emu][item=Winged Barb][item=Swordfish][item=Speckled Fire Lily] Lion’s Mane Emu / Winged Barb / Swordfish / Speckled Fire Lily
“Waah!” Minju jumped when the egg cracked open and confetti burst out. There’s a lot to do, so they got to work. They had a head-start and prepped ahead for the cook. Ingredients were already gathered for the noodle dough, which will now be a pasta. As Jae worked on the dough, which will have Winged Barb powder mixed in it, Minju worked on the sauce: Ground Emu ragu with onions, tomato puree, red wine, and all the ingredients that make Speckled Fire Lily jelly (that Mochi mixed in a small bowl and poured directly into the sauce). Flower jellies are typically made with white wine but red wine works too, wanting to tackle two things at once, Minju decided to incorporate the unset jelly into the ragu. It’ll add a nice sweetness and spice. Due to their size, they were able to work closely together and not take up too much space. Mochi went back and forth, helping both of them out. She got to blend the Winged Barb, grind the Emu, and then use the sev sancha to make the pasta. Once the pasta was boiled and al dente, it went into a fancy bowl with [gamedb item=51956] and mixed to make Buttered noodles. Some butter sticks were also melted in a pan, and the Veilspuns watched Mochi sear a big piece of Swordfish in it, skin removed and seasoned well. Pour the ragu onto the pasta and then lay the Swordfish on top. Enjoy your meal! “…and this, this is called a sev sancha.

“Oh Mochi, you found the Mystery Egg!” They kept the dish warm as they looked around the station for their ‘hidden surprise’. Mochi hugged a rather large pastel blue Egg and flew over to them.

“Was in small fridge!”

“It’s chocolate.” They helped Mochi ‘crack’ it and candied confetti burst out. Jae took a piece of the chocolate and the confetti and gave them a taste. “Delicious! Oh look, there’s a Knotted Rope inside that looks just like a Buttersnake, how cute. Here you go Mochi.”

“Butter.” Mochi cooed over it, when Jae handed it over to her she started chewing on it. Then Mochi yawn and curled herself into a ball, still hugging the Knotted Rope.

She did a lot today. It was time for her to nap.

She’d been cheering on those chosen through the week, and now, on the last day, she was getting the turn she had almost given up hoping for. She’d worried what kind of ingredients she’d have to work with, and was delighted to find a top quality selection. When she saw the Speckled Fire Lilies it was all she could do to hold back a gasp - she couldn’t remember the last time she’d enjoyed such a treat! But, she reminded herself, she wasn’t here to eat, she was here to represent the Weyr! Still, it probably wouldn’t hurt if she sneaked a few “imperfect” ones into her mouth as she prepped. The Winged Barbs, unfortunately, would take some time to make safe to eat. She meticulously incised the barbs from each bug and then dry toasted them in a hot skillet, adding warming spices at the end to coat them - cinnamon, ginger, a pinch of paprika - and let them cool while she mixed together a bowl of honey sweetened cream cheese. She gently mixed the insects in and then scooped little balls that she placed inside each flower. Once she folded them closed, they were done. The rest was, to be honest, a bit of an afterthought. Olearopaeusth didn’t care for meat or seafood herself, but had occasionally cooked for guests. She recognized that the Lion’s Mane Emu and Swordfish were both excellent examples of their type of food stuff, so she figured her basic technique would be the best thing to let them shine. That technique involved cubing the meats and tossing them in herbed Olive Oil of her own “vintage” - which she’d discretely brought in a flask - then skewering them and grilling them until done. Pity they couldn’t share a stick, but with different cooking times, that seemed inadvisable! To serve them, she whipped up a quick pot of Quinoa, and scooped it into shallow bowls. She topped each bowl with 3 skewers, half with two meat, one seafood, and half with two seafood, one meat. She tucked two stuffed flowers on the right, and two on the left, and sprinkled fresh parsley over the top. Perfectly plated, and best of all, she had enough stuffed lilies left to nibble on while the judges evaluated her presentation. She hurried back to her station, and was surprised to see something under the work table she hadn’t noticed before. It was a rather large egg! How could she have missed it? She had seen that other competitors had gotten eggs as well, with various surprise contents, so she figured it was one of those. She thought she’d take it home and let one of the Weyr’s hatchlings open it, since she didn’t want a mess of confetti to deal with here. They’d love it! But when she picked it up, she found it unexpectedly heavy for something containing a gag trinket. And then, it wiggled! Startled, she dropped it, and was mortified when it cracked. Some gift that would be now! But as she watched, the egg continued to shake. The crack widened, and then … a tiny paw appeared! It wasn’t a bird, it was a... Bun-Bun! What strange magic was this?? It shouldn't have been possible! But as she was pondering the absurdity of a furry animal hatching from an egg, the tiny creature hopped over to her extra lilies and began to chow down! “Oh, no you don’t!” she exclaimed and scooped it up. She was going to get her treat, by gosh! She tucked the little critter into a roomy pocket and dug up some parsley stems to distract it while she looked for more appropriate food. When she got home she’d see what advice Greenworth could give her. Maybe he could find it a new home; she certainly couldn’t abandon it here!

She butchered and chopped up first the emu then the swordfish into bite sized chunks. The bugs were probably good whole. She ran to the pantry to grab some more hardy vegetables, as well as sugar and vinegar. The various veggies, including bell peppers and turnips, were chopped up and placed near the meat. The sugar and vinegar went into a blender with the lilies, going for a floral glaze for the kebabs. Pleased with her work so far, she reached down on her station to grab some skewers left over from a previous challenge. Her hand brushed something firm and round. She peeked down and saw an egg! Giddy, she grabbed it and cracked it open. Immediately liquid began to seep out. Was it a normal egg? No the crack was far too clean to be natural, and the liquid was really runny. She closed the egg as best she could and turned it over so she could see inside as she opened it. When she did so, fluid poured out, carry bits of noodle and some sort of meat. The smell hit her: chicken noodle soup. In an egg?? The longer she thought about it, the funnier it got. She giggled, then snorted, then full on laughed. She set the egg down in an empty bowl so the soup wouldn't get everywhere. Then she wiped her hands and got back to work. She began skewering the various proteins, alternating between them and veggies on each skewer. Once she had several assembled, she tossed them all on a hot grill. After letting them cook a while, she brushed on her lily glaze and let it cook a bit more. The sugar toasted quickly, so she took them off the heat and onto a plate. They were ready for the judges! She carried them over proudly, “For my last dish we have skewers! They use the swordfish, emu, and winged barbs. Then they're glazed in a lily-based sauce. I also, uh, found a weird egg. It had, um, chicken noodle soup in it. Besides- well no- including that, this has been an amazing week. I've learned so much and I've loved all these challenges. Thank you so much for hosting this! Maybe I'll come back next year.”

Day 7
The last day of the competition. Millie watched and listened intently as the hosts explained the last challenge. As she was contemplating the ingredients, she saw the hosts checking out an egg. When it burst open with confetti, she jumped and then laughed. What a great little treat! She hoped there would be one around her station somewhere.
For now, she would focus on the challenge.
Lion's mane emu, a common thing to eat back home; Lyra was constantly bringing piles of them home after training dragons for the Gladekeeper.
The winged barbs looked like they would be nasty to deal with if they were alive.
A gorgeous whole swordfish! She was excited to work with this.
Speckled fire lily. Millie wasn't sure she had ever seen one of these before! A volcanic flower sounds like quite the rare treat… for a plant eater.

Since she had two lovely sources of protein, a skewer felt right.
With her food done, Snickerdoodle leaned against the kitchen counter for a quick rest, only to feel something rolling by her feet. "Huh?" Out of curiosity, she bent down and picked it up. The object was a brightly-decorated Easter egg about the size of Snickerdoodle's head. "How did this get here?" She brought it closer to her face for a better look, only for the egg to suddenly explode into confetti! "Tidelord and Flamecaller!" Snickerdoodle shouted in surprise, falling flat on her behind. Once her heart stopped pounding, she frantically checked back on her food, and sighed with relief when she saw that it hadn't been knocked over or covered in confetti. Still, who would leave something like that lying around...?

Since the theme for today was fancy (or at least uncommon) ingredients, Snickerdoodle decided to get fancy with today's dish: surf-N-turf with a side of roasted barbs and lilies.

Starting with the most important parts of the meal, Snickerdoodle cooked steak made from the Lion’s Mane Emu (medium rare) and a Swordfish filet. Once those were done and plated, she worked on the next part of the dish by slow-roasting the Winged Barbs (stingers carefully removed) and the Speckled Fire Lilies together. Mal tears her eyes away from the adorable corgi chasing its own tail to stare at Aisuke making a mad dash towards her and Gale. The three young ambassadors had decided to spend their day off exploring the various activities the Wind flight had set up. "This oughta be good." Gale mutters, the Spiral had propped himself up to see what the commotion was about. Mal shrugs. The blue Fae skids to a halt, slapping a parchment on Gale's face in obvious excitement. "Look at what I found!" "Yeah I'm looking alright!" The Spiral swats Aisuke's hand away before peeling the parchment away to see what has gotten his friend so animated. "'...Mistral Meals. Swing by to test your cooking chops against the ingredients du jour and walk away with some goodies. All skills welcomed.'" Mal raises an eyebrow, clearly not seeing Aisuke's vision. "Ok? What about it?" The Fae's face fell. "Cooking? Food? C'mon guys, how can you say no to free food??" "But it's not like we can walk in and eat without cooking something first." Mal points out. "I'd rather hang out with the corgis." Gale flicks the paper away. "Sounds stupid; I'd probably win if I went anyways." The two return to what they were doing, only to glance up when the talkative Water rep wasn't, well...talking. Aisuke looked at them as if they replaced his favorite knife with a wet noodle. It seemed like he was on the verge of tears and posture was so obviously slumped even a blind person would be able tell. Gale and Mal internally sighed. When he got like this, it meant months of consoling him (and possibly having to do his share of paperwork). "Alright, alright. Let's go to this Mistral Meals thingy." Aisuke immediately brightens at the Spiral's reluctant words. "Really?" Mal pats a corgi on the head one last time before standing up. "Yeah...I guess it'll be fun. Lead the way." He practically skips off as his friends trail behind him. The trio reach a gathering just in time to see Kakigori reveal today's ingredients. Gale and Mal stare at the items on the table, still trying to comprehend what the heck they signed up for. The Wind ambassador snaps out of his daze when Aisuke starts gathering all the ingredients. "Wait, do you know what we're making?" The Fae looks up, a bright smile on his face. "Nope!" Gale slaps a hand on his face. "We'll just...figure it out as we go." Mal groans as she steers Aisuke to a nearby work station. The Coatl turns to inspect the goods, snapping her fingers when an idea pops into her head. "Oh! How about we make the dish where a pig has an apple in its mouth and it looks all nice and what not? The chefs in those books do it all the time and they cook for royals!" Her eyes were sparkling at this point. Aisuke nods in excitement. "We can use the emu as the pig and stuff it with the swordfish and winged barb!" He turns to the Wind rep. "What do you think?" Gale rubs his chin. It sounded doable, all they had to do was roast the emu and...do stuff to the fish and bugs and put flowers on top of it. He nodded his head. "Let's do it. I stick stuff in the fire all the time so I'll handle the emu. Mal, you deal with the fish. Aisuke will tackle the bugs and flowers." The trio split off into their respective tasks. It's an egg. "Hey guys, eggs aren't plants right?" "Obviously not." Gale replies from where he lit the fire. "Some people categorize it as meat." Aisuke tilts his head at it. "Oh, then I'll let you cook it since you're in charge of the meats." He tosses the egg to Gale who catches it without looking. He doesn’t bother to inspect it further, choosing to toss it in the fire. The confetti bursts from the egg, only to get burnt away. After the trio are done with their respective tasks, they gather together to assemble their ingredients. Aisuke drapes the linked winged barbs over the bird and for the finishing touch, places speckled fire lilies around it. They step back to look at the finished product. Mal frowns. "It doesn't look like the ones in the books." Gale scoffs. "Well, authors like to embellish things so of course it's not an exact replica." Aisuke bounces on his feet. "I think the judges are gonna love it!"
Day 7
Meal: ???

"Guysguysguys!!"

"Look at what I found!"

"Yeah I'm looking alright!" The Spiral swats Aisuke's hand away before peeling the parchment away to see what has gotten his friend so animated. "'...Mistral Meals. Swing by to test your cooking chops against the ingredients du jour and walk away with some goodies. All skills welcomed.'" Mal raises an eyebrow, clearly not seeing Aisuke's vision. "Ok? What about it?"

The Fae's face fell. "Cooking?

"Nope!"

Gale slaps a hand on his face. "We'll just...figure it out as we go." Mal groans as she steers Aisuke to a nearby work station.
Lion's Mane Emu Winged Barb Swordfish Speckled Fire Lily

"Ok so the theme is fancy ingredients, any suggestions?" The Coatl turns to inspect the goods, snapping her fingers when an idea pops into her head. "Oh! How about we make the dish where a pig has an apple in its mouth and it looks all nice and what not? The chefs in those books do it all the time and they cook for royals!" The trio split off into their respective tasks. Gale lights a fire and puts the whole bird (feathers and all) into it, watching as the flames turn bigger. Guess the feathers add some kind of texture to the overall dish. Yeah, that sounds right. Can't believe I'm so smart.

Mal has the swordfish splayed out on a cutting board and was examining a knife. I don't really like using sharp objects, but the fish isn't going to cut itself...or is it? The Arcane ambassador places the knife at the mouth of the fish and hovers her hand over the ingredient, chanting under her breath. "Latri a cera onum u magriv!" A pink glow envelopes the fish's head and knife, slowly fusing the two together. "Ra-azi!" She makes a slicing motion down the rest of the body. The fish's head violently wriggles as it twists around to obey Mal's command, slicing and dicing its own flesh. She cheers as it continues to chop until the meat turns into a paste.

Aisuke douses the jar of winged barbs with salt water, drowning them. Ok, they're clean now. I think I should make them pretty. He dumps the soaked bugs on a plate and starts linking them together, centipede style. Once he finishes, he grabs the basket of speckled fire lilies and starts sorting through them. Nuala eats her plants raw so I don't think these need to be cooked- what's this? His hand brushes along a round (definitely not a flower) shape and he fishes it out. It's an egg. "Hey guys, eggs aren't plants right?"

"Obviously not." Gale replies from where he lit the fire. "Some people categorize it as meat." Aisuke tilts his head at it. "Oh, then I'll let you cook it since you're in charge of the meats." After the trio are done with their respective tasks, they gather together to assemble their ingredients. The charred bird is placed on a cutting board first and Gale gingerly pries open its mouth so Mal can stuff it with swordfish slurry meat. Raw fish trickles out of the emu's mouth.

The male Pearlcatcher did enjoy the finer things in life after all so this was right up his alley. Speckled Fire lily was such a succulent flower with a light, delicate taste that was slightly sweet. It was a treat indeed! These elements would make for an excellent surf and turf if he used Swordfish steaks and Lion's mane Emu steaks. The iridescent male quickly made up a lemon, butter, garlic sauce for the Swordfish and lion's mane emu steaks which he cooked on the grill. The emu he shared to get grill marks then set it in a pan and placed it in the oven to finish as emu was a very lean meat. Every few minutes he'd baste the emu steak with more sauce until it was finished. He let it rest. The Swordfish was finished on the grill and allowed to rest as well. The speckled fire lily he gently roasted and muttledfufuf it with some water to make a syrup out of. Once it was reduced to his satisfaction he removed it and added butter and flour to max a roux. He added heavy cream, porcini, and lobster mushrooms to the sauce. One the sauce was set he sprinkled in Parmigiano cheese and drizzled over the lion's mane emu steak. Rokoshi also had a small side salad on the plate with fresh speckled fire lilies and a lemon vinaigrette. The swordfish he gave it a quick squeeze of lemon and it was ready to go.

I have less than 10 entries still to log, but things are getting REALLY hard to focus on. So I'm going to be wrapping up and doing the raffle tomorrow instead of tonight, just so I can ensure everyone's tickets get logged correctly rather than the sleepies making me forget what I'm doing every time I change to another browser tab!

Sorry about the extra extension!!
